Per Delany - B1G considering new conference title format, best 2 teams square off

Submitted by Bo Schemheckler on December 5th, 2018 at 1:15 PM

The B1G is considering just sending the best 2 teams to the conference title game regardless of divisions. I think most would like this change and our favorite comedian/masturbator says it is getting more talk than ever before.

First tie-breaker would be record against common opponents. Next would be record against top B1G team and then descending through the standings for common opponents. If there are no common opponents that break the tie, then the third tie-breaker would be overall record. If still tied, the final tie-breaker would be an arm-wrestling match between head coaches.

Even if we got the rematch of the game for the conference title and won, I'm not sure we could have passed OU. However, I'll take the rose bowl any year. I don't like moving The Game but I have always wondered about a midseason match up, not every year but maybe a once every few years?Just wonder if it would benefit us at all seeing how turned up we were for our 3 game stretch this year. Maybe switch MSU and OSU once. Not sure if this is an all-or-nothing thought process on Delany's part, in which case I would be against it.

Makes sense if the CFP changes format to 6-8 teams where the champ is automatically in - but also may have gotten Michigan/Ohio State in over Oklahoma this year, due to the quality of the win.

If you would have asked me this a few years ago, I would have said that this was stupid.  But over the past few seasons, the dominance of the Big Ten East and the absolute shit show that is the Big Ten West has resulted in our championship game being a complete afterthought that (a) is completely boring and not remotely compelling; (b) does not help the winner make a final case to get into the playoffs; and (c) has resulted in completely mediocre teams playing in the game (see, every big west team that plays in the game since the divisions started) while teams such as 2016 and 2018 Michigan have to sit home.

On the last point, I get the whole "then beat OSU if you want to play in the title game" point, but the presence of a team like OSU - in the midst of a historic run - has blocked us every year.  Why should we have to go through Bama-light (OSU), Sparty and PSU while NW has to get through down Wisconsin, Purdue, Minnesota.  If the divisions were even, perhaps they would make sense but they are so lopsided that they either need to go or we need to realign.

If we realign, I propose:

Division A - OSU, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Md, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa

Division B - M, PSU, Sparty, Indiana, NW, Rutgers, Minn

Note that in the above, the first teams are about equal in each, the second teams are about equal, etc. While OSU is currently better than us, I expect that the gap will narrow further with Urban gone.  Sparty is currently better than Nebraska, but I expect that Frost gets them better quickly and Sparty is starting to slide.

I agree with this.  The big ten west has been a complete joke.  I believe they should do some form of a Big Ten Championship committee, basically a smaller version of the CFP specifically for the Big Ten, and that committee should rank the Big Ten Teams. Head to head, and winning your division should factor, but the eye test, and strength of schedule should matter too.  If Michigan and Ohio State play two weeks in a row so be it.  At least the best two teams will play in the championship.  How it is structured is not right currently.  Northwestern is a good football team but if they were in the east, things would be a different story.  For the most part you will see the top 3 teams in the division as Ohio, Mich and Penn state the way recruiting has been going and trending.

If we play two best teams regardless of division, we don't need divisions.

If we don't have divisions, we don't need Rutgers.

If we don't have Rutgers, we don't have a team in the New York market.

If we don't have a team in the New York market, we don't need New York food.

If we don't have New York Food, we won't have Zingerman's nor Amer's.

I like Zingerman's and Amer's.

Therefore I must oppose this heinous plan to have the two top teams play in a revamped title game.

This is stupid. UM-OSU in back-to-back weeks is just dumb. I realize it wouldn't happen every year, but it definitely would be the most common matchup, historically... and it also happens to be the last game every year.  Makes absolutely no sense.

Do away with all conference championships, require the same number of conference games for every conference, and expand the playoff to 8 teams. Done.

Oh I'm totally for that . But why would the bottom eight teams vote fornthat?  They're better off with the status quo, no?

Um no, why would we want Ohio St vs Michigan in consecutive weeks? Switching Michigan St to the West, and moving Purdue to the East, would be a better move. I would not miss that "rivalry" game. That move, plus drop 4 teams at the bottom of the ladder, 2 in the East, 2 in the West. Make it 10 teams. And have 1 less Conference game.

The loser talk on this board sometimes drive me nuts. 'Don't play ND because they're tough and we might lose. Move the OSU game around so it doesn't look as bad if we lose.' Etc. etc. How about we just move to a G5 conference so we can win every game? I've came to love and be proud of Michigan football, even though we've rarely been at the 'elite' level, because we didn't shy away from the elite teams, didn't try to engineer a cupcake schedule, and played everyone tough. All this p**sy talk from some fans is sad sad sad.

(4) 20 team “super conferences” or (8) 10 team old school conferences whereby you play the 9 other teams and 2 non conference games. No D2 or 1AA games or whatever. Must be from the 79 other teams. Win your conference/division and you make the 16 team tournament. 1st round (conference championship weekend) are at neutral site locations Domes and warm weather locations. 2nd round are the big 4 bowl games. Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Fiesta. January 1. Period. National Semi finals mid January. National championship Saturday before Super Bowl.

Teams not in the 80 can get promoted by winning the 2nd tier championship. Or whatever. Relegation exists to motivate the bottom feeders.

Better idea is to force NCAA to go to 8 team tourney, each Power 5 Conference winner gets autobid, and committee seeds teams and picks 3 at large bids.  Quit screwing around and fix it.

Get rid of the Divisions and the Conference Championship games.  Expand the playoff to 8 and call it a day.  Would work out great and be very fun and exciting (unlike this past weekend’s games).

Sometimes in an attempt to “fix” things, these guys can screw things up even more. If they don’t have an decent fix to something that isn’t totally broken, LEAVE IT ALONE.
