Honestly, this year is the obvious reason why a real playoff is needed.
At least 2 deserving teams will be left out.
Ironically, the worst team in the top 4 will be undefeated (Notre Dame).
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:21 PM ^
What two “deserving” teams are left out?
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
We'll find out soon...
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:05 PM ^
I get what you're saying if you are referring to the four team limit for a playoff system. But what If we apply that reasoning to College Basketball? Why can't we admit that if a four seed can win, them maybe a five seed? So why not an Eight team selection? I know we can't go 64 seeds but why not at least consider the P5 champs and some Independents?
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:03 PM ^
It should be 6, and hopefully it becomes 6 when the current deal is up. The difference between the top 4 teams and the 8th team is huge (ie us).
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:45 PM ^
Good point but some years a wild card game for the 6 spot would be fun!

did anyone just catch Gene Smith smiling ear to ear?
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:12 PM ^
Interesting. Could be he is just having a self aware moment for OSU's last two big wins when they were on being eliminated in Maryland 15 days ago, or that he gets paid a boatload of money for doing absolutely nothing. Than again....
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:05 PM ^
Would laugh my ass off if Notre Dame is jumped twice and penalized for not playing a conference championship.
To Hell with Notre Dame!
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:06 PM ^
This would make my day
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
Ditto your ditto.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
If winning your conference is really important as they say it is, then Notre Dame should be left out. If they want to play for a NC, maybe they could play UCF for that pretend one.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:06 PM ^
This thing is four hours long? Are you serious? And I thought the March Madness selection show was ridiculous!
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:09 PM ^
Normally Michigan’s bowl is leaked out and I can skip all this bullshit. 4 hours sucks!
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:07 PM ^
Per ESPN, the NY6 bowls will be announced at 3 pm.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:07 PM ^
So this is supposed to be for 4 hours. What the hell are they going to talk about for 4 hours?
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:13 PM ^
its espn so.. Bama ?
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:21 PM ^
Don't forget Georgia, LSU, and Florida.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:18 PM ^
Ok/osu I suppose. Neither are deserving in my opinion but one will get in. I think Georgia would beat either of them, but oh well. 3 hours of that is nauseating so we can then discuss the merit of UCF getting their chance, which is just as fun as a colon cleanse. There are probably 10-15 teams in the country that would have the same record as UCF if they had their schedule. I have nothing more to say about them.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
Buckeye fan here--I expect us to be left out, and while I'll be disappointed I won't be angry (except at our seeming ADD at odd times). We don't lose to Purdue, or even lose close, and I think we're in. Do I think we're one of the 4 best teams in the country? Yeah, but OU showed some defense yesterday so I'll understand them getting in. Not so much Georgie (please don't talk of "injustice," Kirby--that word doesn't apply to whether one big-time program gets in ahead of another big-time program) b/c of the 2 losses, including to LSU, who just dropped that epic to TAMU.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:13 PM ^
If OSU lost to Purdue, but kept it at least reasonably close, they would be in.
You guys don't lose much, but when you do, you really make up for lost time.
It's hard to keep all those 5-stars motivated to play Purdue and Maryland. I think they get bored.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:55 PM ^
The common factor with the Iowa loss last year and Purdue loss this year, they both were the first road loss after a big, emotional comeback victory over Penn State.
Last year, after the big comeback against PSU, the very next week was at Iowa City. This year, after the big PSU win, OSU was home the next 2 weeks and was lethargic against both Indiana & Minnesota, but was able to survive. They didn't pay for their lethargy until they went on the road and it was Purdue's "national championship game" (a la The Rutger approach to its Michigan game a couple years ago).
Purdue and Iowa were both ready to slay the dragon on their home turf whereas OSU was still sleepwalking after a huge PSU win both years.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:21 PM ^
I actually think if that Purdue loss would’ve been closer that they could justify leap frogging you guys over ND into that third spot with the way you guys ended the season.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
Last year's OSU team should have gotten a bid. But this year OSU barely beat Maryland, Nebraska, and PSU, plus struggled with teams like Minnesota and MSU more than you'd have expected.
I think they got the four best teams in the country, or at least the top 3 and Notre Dame.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:27 PM ^
I think the 4 best teams are Bama Osu Oklahoma and Georgia. Clemson just behind Oklahoma. I think Notre Dame would lose to any of those teams. The only team they beat was us the first game of the year. Clemson hasn’t impressed all that much.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:48 PM ^
Agreed. Despite my disdain for OSU, I believe an OSU/ND match up wouldn't even be close.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:10 PM ^
GA should not be in. Losses do count.
If losses don't matter, then why play any games?
Just go through the pre-season rankings of the SEC and pick the top 4 and call it a season.
That's what the talking heads all want.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:10 PM ^
4 hours for this show is sheer lunacy imho, but if people enjoy the show, more power to em.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:11 PM ^
I just saw this . " Predictors from ESPN and FiveThirtyEight have Ohio State at No. 4 in their final rankings before the big reveal. In fact, FiveThirtyEight has a top four of Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State, with Notre Dame being left out at No. 5. "
Now im not for Ohio getting in... but man i would love for ND to be undefeated and miss out . Thats what they should get for not being in a conference
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:16 PM ^
At the end of the day, the committee is still a political animal. They will not leave out an undefeated Notre Dame. There is no way.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:17 PM ^
Sadly its not because ND is better or worse - they bring a travel pedigree and $.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
Yeah I know. I think those are based on computer rankings and taking things into account without emotion, just looking at data .
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:24 PM ^
Which is precisely why Georgia won’t make it. There is NO way that they leave out three of the P5 conferences.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:22 PM ^
“In fact, FiveThirtyEight has a top four of Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State, with Notre Dame being left out at No. 5.”
Well, it’s a wrap then. Alabama, Clemson, ND, and Oklahoma it is!
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:38 PM ^
Congrats FiveThirtyEight for getting another one wrong!
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:24 PM ^
I am absolutely willing to see OSU make the playoff at #4 if it meant Notre Dame was left out completely.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
Me too! And give me Michigan vs. Notre Dame in the Grandaddy of them all!
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:53 PM ^
Revenge Tour continues!!! Oh.. wait .....
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:31 PM ^
I would have a happiness aneurysm.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:16 PM ^
Playoff should be expanded to 8 - (not because of Michigan this year).
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:00 PM ^
Yes. UM would not make the field of 8. I see the seedings being:
1. Alabama vs
8. UCF
2. Clemson vs.
7. Washington
3. Notre Dame vs
6. Georgia
4. Oklahoma vs
5. Ohio State
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:36 PM ^
Michigan would assuming that the top 8 is still determined by the CFP rankings without intlcluding automatic bids to conference champions.
December 2nd, 2018 at 3:16 PM ^
Yes, I was assuming an 8 team playoff would give the P5 champions an automatic bid, with 3 at large. If an 8 team field were to be chosen by the eye test, God help us.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:18 PM ^
Please keep OSU out. I can’t stand seeing a single smug ass interview with that cock sucker.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
True that, but the Rose Bowl would make him easier to digest.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:25 PM ^
I mean, if OSU gets in over ND, and we get the Rose Bowl, that would be.... something.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:28 PM ^
They say there is no appetite for expansion of the play-offs
someone is clearly not paying attention
Pretty much all fans want expansion.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:28 PM ^
Georgia is gonna be in
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
Of course Finebaum thinks Georgia should be in. He asked who wouldn't have lost to Alabama, but I notice he didn't mention the 20-point beat-down at LSU, where Bama won handily.
