Offensive personnel breakdown vs OSU

Submitted by Diagonal Blue on November 27th, 2018 at 12:24 PM

From a poster on 247:

Here's the personnel breakdown from Saturday:

11 personnel - 58% of all snaps for 348 yards. 62% pass & 38% run.
12 personnel - 31% of all snaps for 45 yards. 71% run & 29% pass.
21 personnel - 6% of all snaps for 2 yards. 20% pass & 80% run.
13 personnel - 4% of all snaps for 5 yards. 67% pass & 33% run.
32 personnel - 1% of all snaps for 1 yards. 100% run (for a TD).

In other words,  42% of our offensive snaps generated only 53 yards. OSU could not stop Michigan when they were in 11 personnel.

There's also this:

Michigan ran the ball between the tackles 20 times Saturday, for 3.2 yards per carry (and that includes a 15-yard QB draw). When they attacked the edges, they averaged 5.9 yards per carry.

Harbaugh's style of offense has been dead for a while. Both the top NFL offenses (chiefs, rams, saints) and the CFP caliber teams (bama, Oklahoma, osu, ND) are spread to pass teams. They're adjusting to the talent they get and to the way the game is officiated and played. A perfect pass will beat perfect pass defense on a consistent basis.

How many times have we looked on in shock and horror as a normally terrible QB drops in a dime on a slot fade against good coverage? At this point, QB talent is so good, the only hope to stop the passing game is to generate pressure.  That Rams-Chiefs game showed us the future of football, we need to start heading there.

We will never reach the CFP playing dinosaur ball. We need to adapt to the times like Bama, OSU, and Oklahoma have and move to an air raid/RPO style offense.

Fire Pep. Hire Kliff Kingsbury.

That was a genuine compliment! I was agreeing that hiring someone that would run an offense that isn't based on a 1950's playbook would be a good idea. Sheesh Red, smile once in a while.

Kind of looks like we can. I suppose the rankings will show that tonight. Unfortunately for you even if Urby does decide to hang it up, we have a coach in waiting. You'll get there though, big wins against us will help your career for sure!

excellent breakdown. This is a Magnus question: do you know or have any reason to believe that one of our 7 analysts is charting the offense’s efficiently in order to advise on second half adjustments?

based on my observation, it didn’t seem the offense change their approach in the second half

I find this a bit surprising considering the recruiting prowess and our strength of our o-line is supposed to be the interior.

What was this distribution versus down and distance?

I would imagine that 11 personnel came up in long yardage and late in the game, when the offense was throwing the ball more, and the defense was willing to concede more yardage. More backs and TEs were in the game for short yardage plays, when a first down (or TD) was all that was needed.

With few notable exceptions, Patterson was not throwing the ball well, even when he had time. Many balls were behind receivers or short. This happened several times on third down, where the combination of the receiver running two yards short of the sticks and low throws resulted in incompletions or being stopped.

I thought Patterson had a terrible game. He was definitely off on Saturday. DPJ helped him out snagging a couple balls that were terribly thrown, if he throws accurately their is a couple times where peoples-jones can run after the catch and make the first down. I hope that DCaff heals quick and get some bowl practices in. If Shea leaves or even if he comes back if I believe that another year in the weight room DCaff can win the starting qb spot. He may have the most "it" factor. I was very disappointed with Shea's play Saturday, step in to the throw and take a hit if you have to. After Saturday he does not look like an NFL qb.

Does Mayfield start at Lt tackle in the bowl game and runyan at Rt? Does Mgrone get run at mlb? Can Ross get all the playing time at the will, he seems to always be making plays when he's on the field. Can Ambry Thomas get a start at cb see what we have next year? Hopefully Solomon is healthy and can get some good bowl practices in. The defense needs a play maker in the middle of the line, hopefully one of the incoming freshman can come in and contribute.

Absolutely shocked that Ohio State struggled to cover our 4-5 star receiving corps after struggling against 3 stars from Nebraska and Maryland.

I was certain throwing to our slow tight ends and running up the gut against the strongest part of their defense would work.

Absolutely shocked. Quick somebody tell Harbaugh.

...

Harbaugh has a team versatile enough can go spread in various chunks if necessary...now Michigan would have still been in trouble in this game because of the piss poor defense but...I have not quite bought the ''their players are too elite/5 stars'' excuse for this game...this one is all on the coaches

Coach Harbaugh has terrible game plan and refused to change it as the game went on. Unfortunately I think he feels like we just had a bad game and that the approach was wrong. Listen to his AED podcast and you’ll hear him and his claim that if the game was a week earlier or later the result might have been completely opposite and I’m our favor.  I’m betting that we would lose 10 out of 10 if the game plan wasn’t different.  I’m wondering if he’ll learn anything at all about this horrible game.
