McCaffrey looks great

Yes he hasn't played a lot this season but the times he has been in the offense moved well and he throws a better ball than Patterson. I feel confident in him. Hope he doesn't transfer.

But that's exactly why everyone admonishes these terrible posts. The posts create the cesspool that we all have to wade through. I think it's pretty easy to identify some of the worst posters, but obviously they haven't crossed the line enough for LSA to get rid of them.

Edit: Lol speak of the devil

Agree and he has 3 years of eligibility left after this year. This is how you build a proper pipeline of talent in your program so you aren't screwed when someone becomes a bust. We need the same thing for the oline and then we will be set

I was at the game Saturday sitting around 30 yard line. I focused on Patterson and I noticed how he locks in to 1 guy. On one play I remember he had Mckeon and Gentry both wide open but he never looked over and chose to throw it to DPJ who was at least double covered. Even the safety bit and if he looks left it was an easy 6. I hope he can learn to check his progressions better.

This was an area of concern for him coming out of Ole Miss where according to Sam Webb he didn't even have a playbook or enough time to go through his progressions before an Alabama DE ate him for breakfast.

No QB will do this flawlessly especially with the caliber of pass blocking we have but it serves to assume he would improve in this area with good coaching and *please oh please oh please* better pass blocking than he got at Ole Miss as the season progresses.

Right now Patterson is a better QB than McCaffrey.   He just needs to allow his head to swivel more and not lock on to 1 receiver and he has the potential to be excellent.

That said, I am very happy with how McCaffrey has played in limited snaps so far.   He looks poised and comfortable.   He looks ready to play.   I feel if he's forced onto the field the offense will be just fine and that's a very comforting feeling after the QB clown-show we observed last year.

Anyone who missed being in a survivor or knockout pool and still want to be in one, I've been running one for ten years... lots of fun...and we always start this week 2, late on purpose .  3 lives, one bye, pick a team to win (straight up), and then unlimited times in playoffs. Double picks start in week 7 til pool ends. Here is the link if you would like to play...

While I disagree with the OP, I'm not going to have a hissy fit about whether it is a terrible post or not. I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

However, I will address the content of the post itself.

  1. I'm thrilled to have multiple QB's on the roster, and be able to even have this conversation!
  2. Do we believe that the coaching staff knows what they're doing? In particular, does the OP think that JH (with feedback from Hamilton, and maybe McElwain,) made the wrong decision in starting Patterson over McCaffrey? Perhaps the OP has the coaching insight and acumen to do this. I certainly don't.
  3. Imhe, a good QB doesn't necessarily throw the ball the furthest or the hardest. A good QB leads the team to wins. I want the QB that gives Michigan the best chance of winning. If JH thinks that is Patterson, that's good enough for me.
  4. Regarding McCaffrey and PT, I'd love to see Michigan get way ahead in the next 4 games. Should we be able to do that, pull Patterson and put McCaffrey in the game, in the 3rd quarter even, definitely the 4th Q. You protect your starter from injury, you keep your starter fresh, and you give your 2nd string guy more experience, which could be needed. (As an aside, do the same thing at every position. More experience for the 2nd string is critical in building a team where it is "next man up" rather than "deer in the headlights." This is especially important at QB, and also on the OL.

Thank you for the post. In no way was my post a knock against Patterson. I just like the way McCaffery seems composed and polished. Patterson is a freak in the way he can throw while on the run. The pass where he threw side armed was amazing. It just seems the Dylan has a tighter spiral and more command of his throw. People rave how much more talent Elway had over Montana. Montana has four rings and 3 MVP's. Who is a better QB? Montana. The position this team is in now with QB's is light years ahead of last years shitshow. Pep needs to go.

I agree, StephenRKass.  In fact, that's been my number one complaint with Harbaugh -- not giving the second string QB enough playing time.  QB injuries happen all the time, and we need to be able to win with when that happens.  Same thing for the OL.  For some reason, we can substitute all the other positions, but for QB and OL it seems that we never take the starters out unless the game is out of reach, and even then sometimes we don't.  Coincidentally, QB and OL have been our weakest positions.  At least McCaffrey was forced to get some playing time against Notre Dame, due to Patterson cramping.

Seems like McCaffrey has been on training wheels in each game thus far. Barely threw downfield against ND IIRC. Of his completions so far this season i dont think any (outside the mccurry TD) of his targets were more than 6-8 yards downfield

Even though he's had limited field time, when he does take the field, we're impressed.  He definitely has the feel of being the real deal.  When he has the full grasp he's going to be very dangerous.

This thread is bad and the OP should feel bad and the OP should be banned into oblivion.

Not only is it a hot take, it's an awful hot take that is flat out wrong.

I have been saying McCaffrey is the real deal since he came here. Last year he needed some weight and S&C. This year he needs game reps to be ready when Shea leaves. I think McCaffrey will have a great career when the time comes.

this is the way to build a program, have guys prepared to step in when they are really ready

He is talented but too inexperienced. We saw him almost get a delay of game penalty against Notre Dame because he didn’t know how to signal the center
