MGOBLOG 3.0 sticky for bugs

Submitted by Seth on

We are using this thread to collect all the (fixable) feedback for the new site in one spot, and if you're seeing it on the main page it means I've updated the OP content.

If you've noticed any bugs in the site post them here and if you have constructive criticism we very much appreciate it. The developers are also going to be in this thread. Even if we can't always respond, you're being heard.

UPDATE 8/23/2018:

We met at HUEL HQ today and worked through a lot of things.

THINGS THAT GOT FIXED

1. You are now able to edit your account info (and your avatar) by clicking on your account name while logged in. Eventually your history and more (see below) will be tabbed from a single user page but this was the quick fix for now.

2. The points issue is still the top priority that they're working on. We're one step further and testing a possible fix in a test environment right now.

3. Next week or so we'll have the ability to vote on Diaries and Board posts (the OPs) themselves. Could have launched today but we wanted to move it from where they were appearing but it works on the dev environment.

THINGS WE ARE FIXING

Please note that while this is a priority tree it's not necessarily the order things will get fixed. We have multiple developers who have their different skills and as each comes free from a project they grab the next highest one they can handle.

1. Points problems

The issue seems to be in the module we wrote for counting points:

Voting module.PNG

Now that they've narrowed it down we have high hopes of getting to the root of the situation.

Lastly IF YOUR POINTS WERE RESET TO ZERO please post in here and let us know 1) A little bit about your points history, 2) When you lost them (was it during the transition), and anything else that can help us track down whatever behavior is creating this. We can't fix this because we don't know why or to what class it's happening to.

(new) 2. User permission issues.

So right now at 100 points you should be able to vote and post new threads, and at 500 points you should be able to post diaries and edit wikis.

THIS IS NOT WORKING because of an issue with the core module. We are trying a fix that might make everything work right away.

It's a permissions issue. What's supposed to happen is once you hit a points threshold you are automatically bumped up to the next user level. It's not doing the bumping because of the "Actions" module, which comes with Drupal. Now that we've identified where the problem is we're working on a patch.

2. Embedding youtubes and tweets automatically by posting a link

So because of site security we have to use Oembeds. There is a module for Drupal 8 for this but it's a paid service, which with our volume is cost-prohibitive (like they want tens of thousands of dollars per month so screw those guys).

So we're going to develop something. We would prefer to have a system that automatically turns a link you post into an image or youtube or twitter embed. That's a better long-term solution and putting something in place in the meantime would cost us time and resources we'd rather put toward more permanent changes. It's a high priority so we just ask for patience now to be paid off with a better final product than the old site had.

For now you can still post these with regular html tags and most sites will give you the source code if you can't remember how to write <img> tags in html language. We had the option to change the post-a-picture box in the comment editor with the ability to post a link instead of upload an image to our site, but we didn't want to lose that ability to post to our site since it's a feature we really wanted for the new site.

3. Side rail becoming unglued.

I've seen it and several users have as well but we haven't had a developer get into it yet because it doesn't happen too often.

4. "Continue Reading" links on front page will jump to the break tag, not the top of the article.

Another thing on the list for a dev to get to.

5. Comments bubble should link to comments

Right now it goes to the top of the article in article view.

6. Voting shows totals not aggregate

We have to rewrite the module ourselves.

7. (new) Latest post timestamp behavior

Haven't looked into it yet but it's a known issue that the latest post says there's something from a few minutes ago and there isn't. It may be bots causing this behavior.

8. (new) Clicking on a comment in a readers' post history should take you to that post.

Moderators need this.

9. (new) Some content is breaking containers

Design issue. When designer gets back from maternity leave we'll get an estimate.

10. (new) We are developing a "User Page" that will be tabbed thusly:

  • Change your user info (name, email, avatar, password)
  • See your recent post history
  • See replies to your posts
  • Your points history

Most excited about the second-to-last one, which is one of many new properties we plan to add that the old site missed.

Things Over the Horizon

1. Showing New comments in a thread as "New"

We got an estimate of big money to rent a specialist in order to build out this module. This is the next big project after we get the points figured out. Personally I wanted to address it sooner but more people complained about points so that got moved ahead. Be mad at the people who complained about points because it's all their fault.

2. Changing Scroll Behavior

We had a specialist look at this and what's happening is a problem with the order things are loaded. When you post a new comment the page DOES take you to your just-posted comment, but then it loads other comments and that pushes your screen down. If you use the up or down arrows it should take you right back to your comment. This is a problem buried deep and got another big expensive estimate to fix. So we have to wait.

(updated) 3. Apps

The process has begun. We might have a couple of light ones first then more developed ones later. FYI the problem with the old apps is they were not built to play nice with the site. If they worked great on your phone that was because they were downloading the whole site before you went to read it, and that was placing a huge drain on our resources and causing the site crashes. We will have apps and I hope to have a timeline in a few weeks. The latest is there's a drupal module we're going to try. Maybe it'll work the first time with no kinks.

(updated) 4. Saving User Preferences

We want comment settings to stick permanently for each user. Right now it resets when you post a comment. This is a BIG fix so it comes after we get other things done.

Also they're working on a bunch of functions we need internally, like the process for creating breaks, windows live writer issues, and lightbox for UFRs.

not a "bug," per se...

...and it's probably been posted before, but it would be spectacular to be able to have all the comments for a post load in a single page (and save it as a user preference)...clicking to advance to the next set of comments is no fun.

the reason i can't tell if it's been posted?  because i'd have to click 'next page' ELEVEN TIMES TO SEE ALL 544 COMMENTS.  or, at best, six times at 100 posts / page.

ain't nobody got time for that.

Is there a general link to the Diary section..am I missing it?  I see the three threads showing on the main page (not on the mobile webpage btw).

A few suggestions but not necessarily bugs:

1) Adding the ability to view more diaries as suggested.

2) Make the # indicating the # of comments clickable as well instead of just the bubble above them.

3) Make the MGoBoard drop down menu clickable as well. Keep it the same as is, but make it so if I left click on the MGoBoard drop down menu it takes me to the board, but if I hover over it it shows the options it currently does.

Wanted to add a "me too" on the diaries thing--we should be able to look through previous diaries.

For instance, I missed the August version of "This Month in MGoBlog History" which I masochistically follow because it scrolled off the diaries list while I was on vacation. I can get to it via google, but I have to remember both that it is there and the title.

There's a fair amount of quality content that currently just disappears as new diaries are added.

If we can have 5 diary posts on the front page... can we PLEASE have a minimum of 10 board topics? Or pleeease bring back the ability to click over through a few pages if the # has to stay at 7?

Change is not always good. All the squawkers who wanted this now can lie in the bed they helped make.  I suspect it had to be done in the longer run, but the Parrot's advice from Popeye should have been welcomed on this blog. see "Leave well enough alone" song. A classic.

I think something got really wonky in the transition. I seemed to have lost my original account (jclay) altogether which had about 12000 points and my new one doesn't seem to accumulate points at all. Would really like my original account back. :(

Can we PLEASE, any way, somehow PLEASE get pages to load in something less than 20 seconds during games? That was another thing that had been fixed on the old platform and has regressed with the upgrade.

I am not getting points added to my total.

Last night, when trying to post or read comments on the game thread, you'd hit last page and end up at something other than the last page.

Hate to say it, but while the site is bearable on my desktop and laptop PC's, trying to use the site with my iPhone is painful, and I'm using Chrome.  We really need an app that takes us to the board or front page or diaries with listings.

Thanks.

Hey team, is is possible to do something about the ad quality on MGoBlog?  I feel like the ads the internet serves me on every other site are all tightly coordinated.  At this moment in time, since I bought a new house a few months ago and have been shopping for furniture and home services, i get a lot of ads around the net for wayfair, pottery barn, lawn mowers, etc.  The same ads wherever I browse.

on mgoblog, I keep getting ads for underwear I'll never buy, today I got jewelry, but the worst is that I keep getting borderline pornographic ads for Russian women, chinese women, "dating services" etc. etc.

I know everyone will say it's simply based on my browsing history and all that, but let me assure you that in these cases, it's not.  I'm not lying here - that's just not what I spend my time online doing.  But somehow I keep getting these ads.  Trust me, this is not based on my browsing history - in fact I'm usually on mgoblog at work, on my work computer, and believe me I'm not browsing anything even remotely questionable at work (and I don't sign in to chrome with my personal account at work either).  And I don't get ads like this anywhere else on the internet - on my work or personal devices.

At the very least it seems MgoBlog should be able to set some filters on their embedded ad settings to keep the "dating services" ones filtered out.

also i keep reporting these ads as inappropriate using the X in the corner of the ad and they keep coming back.

I realize the ad is served by Google's network, not Mgoblog's fault, but again I am just guessing here, but surely there's some level of settings on your google ads account that would filter these out.

the big issue is i'm browsing at work, tsk tsk, and i don't want someone walking by and getting me in trouble.

This shit has come up before. It's because of the ad aggregator the site overlords have chosen. The ones that pay higher rates often do so because they have to for sites to accept their disgusting ads. In this case, misogynistic. Pretty hard to stand on your damned soap box and preach about the injustice of the Urban Meyer thing while you are profiting from the pervy ads being served on the web site you run.

i'm not going to jump into the ideological fray on this (although it is a fair criticism on its initial view), but my simple request to the site owners here is that i'd just prefer not to see those ads, i come here for football and hoops info, not e-solicitations from trafficked women.

Hello,

Just popping in here again to mention that I still cannot vote or see any way to vote. I also cannot see if other posts get upvotes or downvotes.  My post total has been stuck at 586 since the upgrade. My user name was changed from “Old alum” (no caps on alum) to “Old Alum” (caps on Alum) during the upgrade. I couldn’t care less about that, but I thought the info might help you when looking into the points issue.

Not sure if you'd call this a bug, per se, but are there only like 10 ads you show on this site? 3 of them are to meet some Eastern European or otherwise scantily clad woman, 2 of them are for underwear, and the rest seem normal.

No matter how many times I click on "report this ad" for the dating ones, in particular, with every reason except "covering content", they keep coming back. Make the madness stop. I've not yet resorted to using an ad blocker and I prefer not to.

EDIT: Oh, never mind, I see it's been addressed by others just a couple posts above this one. Guess I should've scrolled to the last page of comments before posting. Point still stands and add my voice to the chorus.

jamesjosephharbaugh

September 7th, 2018 at 10:51 AM ^

i'm very happy you are seeing this too, because i swore it wasn't my browsing behavior causing these ads, now i know it's not just me.

fwiw i went to my google settings and deleted my ad preference interest topics that google generated for me for "romance" "jewelry" and a couple other things.  i also went to the adchoices network and opted out of personalization for every ad aggregrator on the list.

unfortunately it doesn't seem to have helped - in fact, opting out of personalization may make it WORSE because if they don't know what I AM interested in, they may just serve generic predicted ads based on the fact i'm on mgoblog so i'm probably a middle aged, probably white, male, interested in football and generically assume i'm interested in russian girls.

September 17th, 2018 at 7:05 PM ^

I think constantly opting out of those particular ads kinda-sorta helped, but with a catch. Now I'm seeing ads for Filipino girls although, to be fair, they are less frequent. I get the feeling that, once I constantly opt out of those, I'll start getting ads for other girls of various ethnicities. Le sigh...

PS - you reminded me that I should check in on my ad preferences again. I turned off "Foreign Language Study" just in case.

EDIT: Also am starting get ads for Ukranians (which are exactly the same as the ones for Russians), as well as for T*nder. Please make it stop, and it's not just because I've been married for 15 years...

Hi, I just saw an error where the side bar actually rendered below the rest of the content.  It happened on a MGoBoard page after I posted a comment.  I had the green confirmation box at the top - your comment has been posted, then the comment feed like normal, and then the right-hand sidebar all the way at the bottom below the content, and located on the left.

I'm using chrome 68.0.3440 64 bit on windows 10 on a pretty wide monitor, expanded all the way to fill the screen.

I don't know if this is the same thing as the "sidebar coming unglued" you're already tracking.  hopefully this helps.

just a request that my 2 bug reports may be helpful enough to get me adjusted to 500 points as a token thanks - i try to be a good boy around here and had a pretty popular diary and forum post recently about harbaugh getting dragged by media and ohio beat writers screwing up the zach smith reporting (and some less popular ones, admittedly).

Hi everyone,

SIAP (hard to see everything that's been reported on this thread) - but have you noticed that some comment links from a user's comment history go directly to the comment, but others go to the top of the comment thread?  I haven't figured out the difference yet - haven't really tried.  One thought may be that if the comment is on the first page, the link will go directly there, but if it's below the first page, the link goes to the top.

I know this is probably an edge case and not a huge priority but wanted to point it out if you haven't noticed it yet.  Just to let you know - my use case/user journey here is that sometimes I make a comment with a question or observation that I want to see people's responses to...not just in my own vanity, but usually because I want to see others' points of view on something that occurred in a game or whatever, or I asked a question and want to see the replies, so I got to my comment history and hope to jump directly back to the place in question.

To reproduce: Here's a link to my history: https://mgoblog.com/users/jimmyjoeharbaugh. Several of the most recent comments starting with the thumbs up one link directly to the comment (correct behavior) but if you click on the one that starts "Man this TCU game...", it goes to the top of the thread.  The direct link to this comment is here

Sincerely,

Just a suggestion related to the recent troll drama on the board, it looks like banning accounts was effective at stopping the shitposts, but I thought perhaps a shadowban feature might help in these situations.  As a user I hate the concept of shadowbanning but you can't deny it is effective - the troll user can just go on and on posting whatever they want, other users don't see it and don't respond, and the troll doesn't know (at least for a while), that they're talking in a vacuum, so they don't register new accounts or switch accounts or whatever.

Because it's a pretty draconian act, I'd suggest shadowbanning should come with a time limit - a week or month or whatever and if the user loses interest and starts behaving better, their ban with auto-expire and they can participate again.

Other uses suggested a mute feature so they can block individual posters, this is a good idea too.

I spent a little time on 11w during the Urban Meyer drama recently and noticed they have a neat feature where comments that fall below a certain vote threshold (negative points, I think) get rendered in a light grey color that blends in the background and makes it hard to read (and easy to skip over visually).  It's still there, and still visible, so if a user wants to read it, they can.  but if they want to skip it, it's really easy to just jump over to the next one.  I'd expect a feature like that would make MGoBoard threads look a LOT more compact.

Any chance this we'll get another update on bug fixes? It's been nearly a month.

I'm asking because the bug where the Diaries and MGoBoard get unstuck and move to the bottom left of the screen still exists. Happens almost every time I reply to a comment and then have to change the number of replies on the screen back to 100. Getting either one of those fixed would be pretty awesome.

Also, still wondering if there is any chance you can find advertisers who don't look like they're trafficking kidnapped women. I'm assuming we'll never get rid of the swimsuit ads, despite your readership being almost entirely male.

changing from oldest to newest ordering, or changing number of messages per page on the board, seems to almost always detach the right siderail and it shows up off the left side of the page, unreachable.

Anyone not having the keyboard pop up when replying to someone after ios12 upgrade?  When I hit reply on my phone the keyboard doesn’t show. I discovered that if I hit the “B” for bold it pops up, but it doesn’t come up automatically for me on my phone after the ios12 update.
