UM to receive $6 million for 2017 opener

Submitted by si_daddy on

I guess we're getting 6 Mil for the Jerryworld thing in 2017 against Florida. Wonder if we'll bring the band. Here's the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/michigan-to-receive-6-million-for-2017-opener/2014/02/07/2cfbc0d2-901f-11e3-878e-d76656564a01_story.html

Didn't see this anywhere so just thought I'd post the info. I don't know how it compares to the money we got for the last one, or if people think it's worth it.

We don't get $100 per ticket.  We get around half of that.

Not all 109,000 in the stadium pay for their tickets - the paying number is actually below 100k.

our expenses for hosting the game are considerable - like hunders of thousands of dollars, perhaps over a million.

you ignore the increased media attention, hype and possibly sales of Kickoff classic merchandise.  Also, I like being the game day game of the week, featured in prime time nationally.  Most of our home openers don't generate this much expected hype.  Hype and being nationally televised in big spots helps recruiting.  Recruiting is important.

...if Michigan is going to play football on Labor Day weekend (which should never happen in my opinion), I'm more satisfied if it is an "away" night game.  Labor Day ought to be the celebratory end of summer, not the beginning of the fall.  I don't want to be forced to buy four $95 tickets for a football game on Labor Day weekend.  I'd rather have a six-game home schedule than have a seven-game home schedule that includes a Labor Day weekend game.

Gee, I wonder why that would be?

Our last ten home openers:

CMU, MI-OH, N.ILL, Vandy, App St., Utah, WMU, UConn, WMU, CMU

Yet you think that a night home opener against Florida or Texas wouldn't have hype many, many orders of magnitude larger than an opener against Central Michigan University.

Our home openers don't generate this hype because they're against miami-ohio and other rubbish. Against florida it would absolutely be huge, twice, in the swamp and ann arbor. What everyone's ignorning is florida would not likely agree to that. They haven't gone on a nonconf road game outside the state since the 1980s.

Michigan should do everything possible to schedule premiere games on campus, but if not possible, i'd take this game over akron at home every time. Something tells me though Brandon did not try especially hard to get USC/Georgia/Texas etc at home and home before resorting to this.

I wish the game was this year.  Florida is "ripe for the pickiing."  By 2017, they will have their coaching staff straightened out and be a lot tougher.  Then again, Michigan will be reaping the benefits of some very good recruiting and Brady Hoke will have had time to fully restock the team.

Looking forward to redshirt junior Wilton Speight leading the Wolbverines to victory.

That's all hypothetical, but don't be suprised if Florida is a significantly better team this year. If they are not, well, Muschamp will be coordinating a defense somewhere.

I hate neutral site games and generally won't go to one during the regular season.

I have no clue what it costs to put on a game at Michigan Stadium, but when you start multiplying 110,000+ seats times some high ticket price, throw in money made from purchases for food, gear and the like and then subtract travel costs, to say nothing about the revenue that Ann Arbor stands to lose when the town is quiet for a weekend, and it would seem that the finances don't work out favorably.

Plus, I'd like to go to Gainesville and see Florida's campus and stadium.

Another bad idea.

For a non conference game the tickets are typically $65 (unless it is a marquee matchup)... but let's be conservative. Ticket sales alone for 110,000 would be $7,150,000... add in concessions, merch, and all the revenue for the city (parking, food, shopping, etc.) and it is a landslide.

These games are all about marketing. For other schools $6 million might be a King's ransom. For Michigan it's a paycut.

I read ten comments in this thread and already got a headache from all of you complaining. We are playing Florida - on a national stage, where GameDay will be in attendance (more than likely), in a state that produces the best talent in the nation, and made $6 million really quick.

What did I miss? Oh, yeah you guys would rather travel to UConn or watch us play a MAC school in Ann Arbor. Honestly, I am more excited for the Florida game in Dallas than the Arkansas game at the Big House.

No SEC school is going to go north for a home and home. Alabama vs Penn State is the only one I can remember in the last decade. I live in Nashville, and they all feel entitled to not have to travel north of Nashville to play the Big Ten. That's part of the reason the playoffs on home campuses failed.

Slive didn't want his teams going into Columbus or Ann Arbor in December/January.

"No SEC school is going north for a home and home," then give a direct counterexample.

At worst, it's hard to get a home-and-home deal done, but if Penn State was able to make it work there's little reason to believe Michigan is incapable.

It's going to be a great matchup so I'm not complaining on that front. I really just wish we found a way to make a home and home out of this. Having this at Jerryworld makes it feel so sterile and corporate. Nothing would beat getting to go down to the Swamp one year and have Florida come up to the Big House the next year. I'd take that over a neutral site any day.

I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said thousands of times on this board but having these high profile matchups at our respective home fields would be so much better.

Premium tickets are $95. 95 x 109,901 = 10,440,595

Parking at the golfcourse is $40 or 50 per person. Not sure how much a season parking pass for Crisler is.

Then you have money from merchandise as well.

Take out money for staff, paying the other team, etc. but I can't imagine we'd make significantly more in this game than a home game.

Let's go ahead and calculate how much Michigan will lose relative to a home game against CMU.

Michigan Stadium Ticket Revenue:    110000*65 = 7,150,000

Staff + Facility cost: 500,000
Cupcake fee: 1,000,000

Profit: 6,000,000

If the basic assumptions are close to right, Michigan probably loses around $1.5MM by playing this game due to travel costs. Or, we could play a home and home with Florida, get the same net as playing in Jerry World, and have two interesting games.

This is totally worthwhile.

Yours are not correct.

Tickets don't average $65. Closer to 50. We also don't charge for 101,000 tickets. Many are given to media, university affiliates, recruits, etc.

You also ignore costs of hosting a game in the Big house such as insurance and staff, which together are worth hundreds of thousands of cost.

Also, let's ignore that we may sell a bunch of kickoff classic merchandise.

Our net revenue (without considering concessions and other ancillary amounts) exceed $6mil per game (~$6,678,000).  So, we're losing almost $700K to play a game in Dallas.  Things I don't care about - Dallas.

  • $6M
  • National spotlight
  • Premium SEC opponent (despite their recent struggles)
  • Premium market
  • Premium venue (that also happens to be in my back yard)

Yes, please! My family and I will be there in 3 years when we even our record in that stadium.
