Split MNC

Submitted by Finance-PhD on
If FSU wins then I think the AP falls right in line no question. If Auburn barely bests FSU do you think we could split the MNC like the 2003 season? I would just laugh and laugh because the BCS changed the rules 10 years ago to stop that from happening.

Lots of big "ifs" there I know but is it something you could see happening? If it does what impact do you think that would have on the playoff selection?

...in the old, old days, the polls used to award their championship after the regular season and before any bowl games were played.  So it could be argued that it is tradition to discuss before they play.

If Alabama dominates tonight and Auburn squeaks by FSU then I could see a possibility where the AP pollsters could vote for Alabama.  The coaches are required to vote for the winner of the BCS National Championship game.  Dantonio (and perhaps more) will vote MSU #2 though.

True but the writers are free to do anything.  If Alabama wins tonight 38-10 and Auburn wins a shootout against FSU I might think Alabama deserves to be ahead of Auburn given the manner in which they lost.

I thought the entire point of the BCS was to eliminate split championships and that now, with the BCS in charge, the AP "champion" was no longer recognized?

Is that wrong?

Auburn would be #1.

The only debate would be whether MSU's early season ranking cheated them out of their rightful ranking at #2 and a shot at FSU.... but as usual, this would be all hindsight.

Could be Auburn, FSU, 'Bama, MSU, OSU all with a single loss;  Auburn gets the nod because they won at the right time and climbed the polls to be at #2  (not necessarily because they were the rightful second best team).

Honestly, why was Auburn any more "deserving" than any other 1-loss team?  Because their conference has a better PR department than any other conference?  They lost a game and won two other games basically on acts of God.

Like you said, because of the SEC media machine. I don't want to take away from what Malzahn has accomplished, but if it were all up to me, I probably would've thrown Bama in the title game.

Auburn is in the title game because of two one in a million plays that will never happen again. And that's what irritates me about them. FSU is there because they beat the crap out of everyone they played. Bama is usually there for the exact same reason. Auburn lucked its way into that game. And let's not forget that miracle play against Georgia was after they blew a multiple TD lead at home.

Doubtful. If Auburn wins, the ESS EEE SEE Y'ALL hype will carry the day.

It is scary to think about what would have happened if Sparty hadn't been screwed by South Bend officiating. The idea of Michigan State earning a berth in the NCG while Michigan stumbled to its fifth five-loss season in six years is nauseating.
