ESPN (projections): Michigan vs. Georgia in Gator Bowl

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

I know there was a CBS Predictions Thread that had us playing Vandy, but the info was a week old.

Here's an updated prediction.

We were also an underdog last year to South Carolina.  We went into the game as an 8-4 team that was 4th or 5th in the Big 10.  South Carolina for most of the season was considered a National Championship contender, but somehow we almost took that game.

Don't buy into the hype of the SEC.  I know we haven't been good, but the Big 10 is very undervalued this year.

Something else to consider.  Both Auburn and Missouri were bottom feeders in the SEC last year, but somehow are in the Conference Championship Game.  To me that is an indication that the SEC is down this year, just not acknowledged by the media yet.

The media narrative with the SEC is that teams at the bottom like Missouri and Auburn show how strong the conference is.  If Purdue and Minnesota were in the Conference Championship, the media would harp on that being an indication that the Big 10 is down.

In addition, Missouri in the Big 12 never sniffed a Championship, but have somehow managed to go through the SEC with one loss in year 2 and are now in the Championship Game.  Maybe the SEC IS OVERHYPED!

We almost won, however we in fact lost.  Which is what I would expect again.  Although it's a great opprotunity if we can win, I kinda expect a more similar result as last year...we play a good game, play hard, but get beat by big plays by a team with more playmakers.

Georgia's one of the classier SEC teams, with Richt being an open critic of oversigning.  I've tried hard not to like Richt due to him being on the Bobby Bowden coaching tree, but he seems like a good guy.  And both schools have a rich football tradition - it wouldn't have the feel of playing a made-up school (like UCF, USF, etc.).

Murray's absence, however, changes the game pretty drastically.  And the Dawgs are riddled with other injuries, as many have already noted.  So we would be playing a still-hobbled UGa team.

Overall, I'd like to see this matchup to see how it plays out.  I'm guessing that Mattison will have a plan to deal with Gurley after the defensive letdown against Hyde.  And if you stop Gurley on a Murray-less Dawgs, there's not a whole lot left in their gas tank.

The first time where I agree w some and think the AUBURN should be number 2 ahead of the Big10 regardless. Look who they played this year in comparison to Ohio. It's not even funny. You could make the case for them being number 1 as well. Thoughts?

Everyone seems to be underestimating Missouri.

They are a field goal hitting an upright in 2nd OT from an undefeated season.

If Michigan state and Ohio play each other closely, Auburn might jump Ohio due to the coaches poll, I feel. This is the scenario where Ohio plays in the rose bowl against Arizona State, MSU plays UCF (lol) in the orange - I feel like this would give us the best chance for a great B1G bowl showing while still denying Sparty their rose bowl and keeping Ohio out of the MNC game. Wisconsin has a great chance to beat S. Carolina, and Michigan has a great chance to beat Georgia. Couple this with Minn vs BC and Nebraska v Kansas State, and we could be looking at a great Big 10 bowl record. Probably the first time in the last 4 years that we would all get fair matchups.

in the Rose?  I think Stanford beats them and then MSU/Stanford should be a good one.  I think we would beat Georgia

I like this matchup for one main reason and that is a win would show we can contend with the SEC.  If some miracle has happened and the team has started to click then we should be able to handle them as Vandy did.

Do I worry about playing Georgia? Yes.  But a win would do wonders for us after a poor season and give some good momentum going into next year.

Got fortunate to beat GTU.

We're not dealing with South Carolina here.

Hope a win and an 8-5 season (after last year's 8-5 season) FINALLY gives us a boost next year.

If MSU went from 7-6 and FIVE home losses and a 3-5 B1G record to the B1G title game...why not US?

Hutson Mason, UGAs backup, is a RS Jr who threw for 300 yards/2TD/1 INT in his first start against a not terrible GaTech team.  He only had about 40 yards and the interception before he started to get comfortable in the last two minutes of the first half.  Plus we all know what Gurley can do.

That will be a real tough matchup.
