GR III projected at #11 in NBA draft
Three Michigan players are now projected to go in the first round of the NBA draft. As a group, they seem to be trending up.
GR III #11 to Phoenix
Burke #18 to Milwaukee
Hardaway #25 to New York

If GR3 stays can can move up to be a top 5 pick, it might be worth the investment if you look at the NBA rookie salary scale: http://www.hoopsworld.com/2012-13-rookie-salary-scale/
It's as much as earning twice the amount of money in the span of the first 3 years. If he stays for his sophomore year and becomes the #1 scoring option on next year's squad, he has a chance at turning a good ROI.

Meyers Leonard was the 11th pick last year. Here is his contract and what we are hoping GRIII says no to guys:
2012 | 2,126,520 | |||
2013 | 2,222,160 | |||
2014 | 2,317,920 | |||
2015 | 3,075,879 | |||
2016 | ||||
That's a LOT of money to ask somebody to turn down.

It could be a billion dollars and I'd still hope he stays another year....unless he was letting me be his agent.

It is nice to have something to fall back on. But, the reason people go to school (mostly) is to earn more money. I dont see many degrees earning $14,000,000 in a life time. Let alone 5 years. Hey, I like watching GRIII play but if he leaves, good for him.

I hope GRIII goes #1 and Michigan wins the 'Ship.

I've heard from friends of his that he hates academics. I know we all assume that a kid who grew up the wealthy son of an NBA player would value academics highly, but I think GRIII thinks of himself as an NBA talent first and foremost.
Hopefully, he realizes how much higher his stock would elevate after a sophomore season as "the guy" for Michigan. My meaningless opinion would put the odds at about 50/50 right now, and those might lower if we reach the Final Four.

Is there anyone out there who'd rather take tests and study hard rather than play a game to make millions of dollars?

You live in South Florida, but you have connections to a guy who goes to college 1,000 miles away? I'm not sure I believe you.

How our team performs in the tournament and specifically how those three perform will determine where they end up in the draft, but I think all three of them could wind up like this.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:09 PM ^
GRIII has been on their board for months, before the season started.
This is not any indication as to what he intends to do.

And here is why. His father, who was a 1st round 1st pick of the draft will tell his son to chill out your freshman year, learn the game more and become that #1 pick in next year's or 2015 draft. I see him staying aboard for us after this year. Trey did it last season, so GRIII will do that.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:14 PM ^
Will both be back next year. Robinson wants another year under Beilein to develop and Hardaway is having too much fun at Michigan. He will graduate as a senior.

Please be a two-and-done GRIII!

How great would it be if all three stayed one more year???
A man can dream, right?

So, what you're telling me is we're producing NBA talent.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:25 PM ^
he gone - unless we arrange a meeting with a certain left tackle from the football team so they can discuss the joys of staying in Ann Arbor
January 28th, 2013 at 3:27 PM ^
Rats.. I wasn't even considering losing Robinson after one year, and wanted to see him morph into the BigDog and thicken out... I cannot imagine he leaves... he looks so young, too.
Can someone here please chime in and give me educated odds of each player staying at M next season?
1. Burke
2. Hardaway
3. Robinson
4. McGary

Burke staying: 10%
Hardaway staying: 25%
GRIII staying: 50%
McGary staying: 99%
Unless McGary goes full on beast mode with Morgan out and suddenly starts pouring in 20+ ppg every game for the rest of the season, I don't see any scenario in which he is a one and done. I think Burke is gone unless he feels there is unfinished business after this season if we dont win it all. Timmy is probably gone but might stay because he wants to up his draft stock, since many projections put him at the back of the pack. GRIII I think will stay for another year having seen first hand what it did for Burke, but if he goes all Carmelo Anthony in the tourney he'll probably be gone if his draft stock goes up to the top 5 or so.
Just an uneducated guess though, based on what I've seen through 20 games this season.

Though I really think he is the ONLY one that would be a starter in the NBA coming out of school. GR3 has such tremendous upside potential - but his Dad knows all too well what the NBA can do to a young kid. I believe GR3 is at Michigan for the same reason Tim's dad sent Tim to U of M - namely Beilein.
Since Trey's from Columbus - he may still be listening to his people there, but I think we have 50% on Tim, Jr returning, 67% of GR3's return and I'll put Trey at about 20% given that the other 2 stay. 100% on McGary ...
Go Blue!

If he truly is rated that high, it's hard not to go. As the man, he could move up slightly, or he could be DeShawn Sims. Much more downside than upside there. I'd like him to stay another year because I think there are aspects of his game that he should improve from a basketball stand point. But because the NBA drafts so much on potential and he has shown many good things already (while still having a lot of potential) it makes him high value at this point.
Rarely anymore are college basketball players coming close to maxing out their potential before leaving, and as a Michigan fan and a college basketball fan, it would be nice to see more of these players that still have quite a ways to reach their ceiling to stick around, however it's just not worth it for them in the end.

I don't see 17 better players than Trey Burke coming out of college or overseas. It's a crime if he doesn't go top ten IMO. The Bucks are a damn good fit for him though. I see him as a Brenndon Jennings type of player in the NBA.
January 28th, 2013 at 3:37 PM ^
This is why now is the year to win it all. When we have Burke, GRIII, THJ, Stauskas and McGary out there, we have 5 guys who are going to play in the NBA. There is no dominant team to contend with, nothing like Kentucky last year. This it it.

Move along. Stop looking in this direction please. You keep assigning smaller numbers to all of my favorite players as the year goes on and I'd like you to stop
January 28th, 2013 at 3:42 PM ^
Fred Jackson and I agree...
Trey Burke = Chris Paul
GR3 = James Hardin
McGary = Kevin Love (not just because he's white)
TH2 = Scotty Pippen
January 28th, 2013 at 4:16 PM ^
He plays PF now and will play SF in the NBA.
Harden played SG in college and plays SG now. They're nothing a like.
...come to think of it, THJ doesn't make sense either. Pippen played SF and THJ plays SG.

Anyone who wants him to stay is being selfish. Not that there's a problem with that but if you say it's for any other reason than thay you are lying.

It's all about projected draft position. If Little Dog has enough "experts" (meaning pro scouts, agents, family members) telling him that he's a lottery pick, there is a very strong chance he bolts. Same with Timmay.
Guys who are lottery picks do stay around once in a while (McAdoo and Zeller last year for example), but it isn't a common occurence. I'd wager that GR3 will land a projection of somewhere in the latter half of Round 1 and come back to be the "man" and THJ and Burke both get lottery projections and bolt, especially with a strong tournament performance.
Odds of Returning:
Burke - 0%
Timmay - 60%
Little Dog - 50%
Even if all three leave you'd still have...
PG - Albrecht
SG - LeVert
SF - Stauskas
PF - McGary
C - Morgan
With Walton, Irvin, Horford, and Biefeldt off the bench and another 4-star frosh in Donnal. Certainly not this year's squad, but not too shabby either. If both THJ and GR3 return, then, we'd have to be a contender again next year, especially if Walton can come in and play well right away.
That said, forget about it fellas, let's enjoy this ride.

crazy how good burke is that this is projecting GR3 ahead of him

While he obviously has some relationship with his dad, I haven't read anywhere that he is super close with him. And I have no idea how well off the Big Dog is these days. You can't assume that GRIII doesn't want/need that big payday. Anyone going in the first round is getting big guaranteed money.
