Where will Michigan basketball be in the new rankings Monday
Indiana, Louisville both got knocked off this week. It will be interesting who the new number one is this week. I feel Michigan will be number 3 this week gut feeling. Burke was featured on lastest BTN Journey episode thought it was good piece on him.
My top five
1 Duke
2 Kansas
3 Michigan
4 Syracuse
5 Louisville

definitely 2. kansas was only 1 point ahead of mich last week and they didn't look good against an unranked team (texas) while mich beat a ranked team (minn).

There is very little seperation from the top 10 teams right now. Michigan's win @ Minnesota is just as impressive as Syracuse's @ Louisiville, IMO.
I see everyone in the top 6 sliding up in the order they are in currently with Louisville and Indiana following.
January 20th, 2013 at 11:42 AM ^
Louisville should have won that game. It's not like Syracuse soundly beat them.
January 20th, 2013 at 1:32 PM ^
Doesn't matter...they won against the #1 team in the country at their place. They could have looked pathetic, but in the end, a win is a win
January 20th, 2013 at 12:41 PM ^
Why should Sryacuse jump everyone? Before yesterday, they had beaten no one, and now they've beaten only Louisville, who has beaten no one. Syracuse lost to Temple, and their top 3 wins are, in order of RPI: @ Louisville, San Diego St (neutral) and Rutgers at home(!). Considering Louisville has lost to the only 2 top-25 teams they've played, that @ Louisville alone isn't enough to put them at #1.
Hell, Minnesota is ahead of both Syracuse and Louisville in RPI, and NC State is just behind them. We have a much better argument for #1 than Syracuse does.
January 20th, 2013 at 12:43 PM ^
1. Pollsters love Syracuse
2. It's round robin this time of year
3. Why not?
January 20th, 2013 at 12:49 PM ^
Your first too reasons, terribly as they are, might be true, so I can't really refute them. As for your third point - of the 5 one-loss teams at the top - Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Michigan and Syracuse - their respective SOS are 2, 4, 6, 14, 35.
Unless you are ranking "who beat the highest ranked team last week only" Syracuse has no business being #1. Hell, I think Minnesota is a better team than Louisville, and we won at Minnesota last week. Minny has beaten MSU and Illinois, and their only losses are Duke, Michigan and Indiana. That's a far better resume than Louisville, arguably better than Syracuse as well.

#3 in the rankings but #1 in our hearts
January 20th, 2013 at 2:38 PM ^
Seth Davis just tweeted out his AP ballot that had us at the top spot. So we may end up being #1 in both.

we should be #2 and hopefully #1 next week!!
January 20th, 2013 at 10:13 AM ^
The voters could move Syracuse ahead of us. The also have only one loss and they just beat #1 Louisville on the road. That might actually push them to #2. You could really throw a blanket over Duke, Michigan, Syracuse and Kansas. Man, is that a sexy-looking quartet ... or shall we say: Final Four? Replace Duke with Indiana and it would be better still, for the B1G.
January 20th, 2013 at 10:16 AM ^
When you go to any of the top five teams and look at the rankings of their opponents, no one comes close to playing a B1G schedule. Louisville is probably the closest in terms of difficulty.

What the top 5 should rightfully be:
1. Duke
2.Michigan
3.Syracuse
4.Kansas
5.Louisville
What will actually happen:
1. Syracuse
2.Duke
3.Kansas
4.Michigan
5.Louisville

#1 Duke
#2 Michigqn
#3 Syracuse
#4 Kansas

Courtesy of StatSheet, here's the season trend with ranking and vote totals:
Date | AP | AP Votes | Coaches Poll | Coaches Votes |
---|---|---|---|---|
01-14 | 5 | 1415 | 5 | 678 |
01-07 | 2 | 1553 | 2 | 744 |
12-31 | 2 | 1547 | 2 | 744 |
12-24 | 2 | 1551 | 2 | 745 |
12-17 | 2 | 1543 | 2 | 743 |
12-10 | 3 | 1444 | 3 | 705 |
12-03 | 3 | 1467 | 3 | 701 |
11-26 | 3 | 1421 | 3 | 691 |
11-19 | 4 | 1388 | 4 | 643 |
11-12 | 5 | 1327 | 5 | 638 |
11-01 | 5 | 1290 | 5 | 605 |
My guess is that floor for #2 is probably going to be in the 1550 range for the AP Poll and 750 or so for the Coaches Poll again, so if we can get there in the voting, we'd have a realistic shot at #2 (but there is very little separation between the top several teams, so perhaps a #3 is what this total would get now). That being said, Syracuse beating a #1 Louisville team is as big as our win on road against a solid Minnesota team, so I have to think some votes are sent in Syracuse's direction. I would say the most likely scenario is that end up #3 just based on the point total trends in the voting, although this is hardly the most satisfying outcome.

#1 Duke, #2 Michigan, #3 Syracuse, #4 Kansas, #5 Louisville
I think the win on the road at Minnesota will still hold some weight with voters. Plus Kansas has been okay at best in conference play. I think the only way Syracuse jumps us is because there is this lingering doubt as to whether we're really "back". I think we're still fighting that perception.

Those teams all still have games to lose, and there will be a lot of churn in the top 10 over the next six weeks. Whether someone finishes 2nd or 6th or whatever will have as much to do with the timing of their losses as anything.

Syracuse SHOULD be ranked higher than Kansas in the new poll. That being said, they probably won't be. It's good to be staying near the top of the polls. We had a pretty damn convincing win agains Minnesota, and our only loss was to a top 15 team. I think the rankings should be #1 Duke, #2 Michigan, #3 Syracuse, #4 Kansas, #5 Louisville.
January 20th, 2013 at 11:39 AM ^
My prediction:
#1 Duke
#2 Syracuse
#3 Kansas
#4 Michigan
#5 Lousville
January 20th, 2013 at 11:54 AM ^
That's what I expect to happen as well. You can certainly make a case that we should be ahead of Syracuse and/or Kansas, but I don't think it'll happen. The voters don't watch all the games, and they don't necessarily punish teams for close wins.
January 20th, 2013 at 11:41 AM ^
#1 Duke
#2 'Cuse
#3 Kansas
#4 Michigan
#5 Louisville
I would like to see Michigan and Kansas flip since Kansas is 1-1 against ranked teams and only has 2 ranked games left on the schedule (K State twice)

Beating #1 is impressive, but their loss was at home to Temple, while ours was on the road against OSU. It's a very close call, but I think we should beat them out for the 2 spot.
January 20th, 2013 at 12:22 PM ^
If we are just going to base it off one game, we should be #1. We beat NC State, NC State beat Duke, therefore Michigan > Duke.
January 20th, 2013 at 4:42 PM ^
I like the way you think!
January 20th, 2013 at 11:58 AM ^
Either #3 or #4. Duke and Syracuse will be ahead of us, I'm pretty sure. (Whether justified or not, beating the #1 team on the road looks really good on paper.) Kansas, I'm not sure about.

January 20th, 2013 at 12:14 PM ^
I agree with your top five. Although #1 went down this week, I think the manner in which the Gophers lost at home was more impressive than Syracuse road win. Given Michigan lost to OSU, teams Duke and Kansas beat, Michigan remains third!
January 20th, 2013 at 12:21 PM ^
#1. Beat a top-10 team from the best conference in the country, on the road.

Hopefully the voters do more than only look at the last game played like all of you are doing. Syracuse? Really? They've played one tough game all season, to a team that was probably a paper tiger to begin with.
That said, I don't have much faith in the AP voters either.
January 20th, 2013 at 1:23 PM ^
Michigan will have a decent chance, regardless of whether it is warranted, of being #1 in the polls. The first place votes should be divided among Duke, Michigan, Kansas, and Syracuse, so it will come down to who gets the most second place votes. I would guess Michigan ends up #2 with Duke at #1.
January 20th, 2013 at 1:28 PM ^
I agree with this. Syracuse will get a solid share of first place votes from the "oh look shiny thing!" crowd who is only looking at their win against Louisville, but they'll also get a lot of 5th and 6th place votes from the crown who looks at their whole schedule and isn't impressed. Michigan will probably be 2 or 3 because almost no one will vote them lower than 3rd or 4th.
January 20th, 2013 at 1:36 PM ^
Duke
Kansas
Michigan
Syracuse
Louisville

No 1-loss Arizona over 2-loss Louisville? At least Arizona has a quality win.

Sabatino Chen may dispute the fact that Arizona has one loss.
