Weight Updates
Mgoblue.com now has an updated roster - it says "Spring Roster" but that's a misprint. Some of the weights are different from the earlier ones posted in the Media Guide, and a few are interesting:
T. Rich + 8. to 162 (soaking wet?)
Funchess +4 to 229 (close to legit TE size)
B. Moore +7 to 268
Drake Johnson +6 to 209
Hopkins +5 to 240 (not sure if this is a good thing)
J. Clark +9 to 200
Houma +6 to 227
Wilkins +4 to 294
Wormley +11(!) to 279 (playable)
RJS +7 to 213 (that's more like it)
Ojemudia +8 to 231 (ditto)
Willie Henry +12 (!) to 314 (good weight??)
Braden -11 to 308 (probably a good sign)
Blake Bars + 8 to 291
Godin +7 to 277 (playable)
Ryan Glasgow +9 to 294 (Pfd. WO Freshman DL)
Ricardo is #80 - listed at 226 - was 225 in the Media Guide
Mario at 231, this i like.
Ojemudia almost has to play now that Clark has put himself in legal trouble (allegedly)...
Willie Henry at 314 seems a bit high, in the sense that he should probably start heading the other way to get to his ideal playing size. I doubt that's good weight, but I could be wrong.
Braden will start a game this season - book it.
That was more of a "gut prediction" than something I know. I do, however, feel that Braden is very underrated and will surprise some people coming in. He didn't start playing football until later in his life and I think he could come in and compete from the get-go. Just a hunch.
you admit just started playing football late in his life is going to be a gut feeling for starting on the OL as a true freshman. He doesn't understand the game as much as he should nor does he have the technique down to contribute right away.
....................but OK

Let's hope your prediction is terribly wrong. Braden is a tackle and with Lewan and Schofield starting at tackle it would take an injury or 2 for Braden to start there.

That's bad news, because Kalis is better and the coaches plan to start Kalis off at RT.
So if Braden starts a game, that means Kalis is starting somewhere else (LG?) and we've got two true freshmen starting on the line. Yikes.

Icefin26 it or I don't believe you
if he's a nose, which I bet Henry will be.
According to my Phil Steele, MSU, OSU, Wisconsin, FSU, MIami, Va Tech, TCU, South Carolina, Florida, LSU, Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, Oregon, Auburn, Oklahoma, and USC are just some of the programs with DTs or NTs listed at 300+.
It might be too high if he was only 270 a few months ago. Admittedly, the recruiting sites could have been behind the times in regard to his senior year weight, but adding 44 pounds in the span of about 6 months is a lot.
Also, he really needs to play 3-tech if the coaches were honest about all those other guys (Godin, Wormley, Strobel) being headed for 5-tech. I don't believe for a second that all three guys will play 5-tech, and I'm guessing both Godin and Wormley will eventually be 3-tech DTs. But just based on the general dispersion of what positions these guys were recruited for, having both Pipkins and Henry as nose tackles would leave a hole at 3-tech.
But he's still at least a year away from hitting the field. He needs to get stronger and bigger. He's going to be a really good DE though.

Who's going to be Beyer's backup at WDE if/when Clark can't play until after his September 11 court date?
August 6th, 2012 at 10:10 AM ^
Just looking at the size of the incoming DLs, maybe Strobel?

August 6th, 2012 at 11:02 AM ^
I don't think that's really a viable option. If both Beyer and Ryan are starting and the coaches are rotating guys in and out to keep them fresh, then Ryan would be on the field 100% of the time (either starting at SAM or subbing at WDE).
Also, the second SDE is likely to be Keith Heitzman or Nathan Brink, neither of whom can hold down the WDE position, in my opinion.
I think Strobel is the best fit there outside of Ojemudia, but if Clark could play situationally last year, I don't see why Ojemudia can't do it. It's not ideal, but that's what happens when you run into trouble with the law - the whole team is put into a bind.
August 6th, 2012 at 11:36 AM ^
I can see Ojemudia as a backup if Clark is not available (pleeze no), but if Beyer gets hurt then you might see Roe shift back to WDE with Heitzman, Brink and one of the big freshmen (Godin or Wormley) backing up at SDE. So let's hope that none of this happens and Clark is given a slap on the wrist and has a great season.
Why not put Ryan in the dirt and bring in Cam Gordon when Beyer needs a spell. Imo that's the best possible way to keep the best talent on the field at once.
...because then Ryan is playing 100% of the time and never getting a breather.
3 players. 2 positions. 1 player plays both positions.
So why can't he get a breather again?
August 6th, 2012 at 10:13 PM ^
Are you suggesting that all three play both positions? That's not how I interpreted it.
If you're saying that Ryan, Beyer, and Gordon should all play both SAM and WDE, then yeah, everyone could get a breather.
This is how I interpreted your suggestion, though:
Snap 1: Ryan at SAM, Beyer at WDE
Snap 2: Ryan at SAM, Beyer at WDE
Snap 3: Gordon at SAM, Ryan at WDE
Snap 4: Gordon at SAM, Ryan at WDE
Snap 5: Ryan at SAM, Beyer at WDE
Etc.
Besides, I don't think you want one guy constantly bouncing back and forth between positions. You would probably be better off playing a slightly less talented guy at a position he knows well.
August 6th, 2012 at 10:27 PM ^
Gordon being strictly a Sam and Beyer strictly a wde. Ryan either or. I think it's better flipping Ryan up and down than bringing in Mario if he's not ready. Gordon is quite talented as many people have forgotten and Ryan has put on some good pounds. Frank really hurt the depth at wde.
August 6th, 2012 at 11:37 AM ^
Magnus, do you think Cam Gordon can possibly be a backup at WDE in emergency situation, last I've heard his weight was about 225 which would make him small for that position, but I'd like to see an athlete of his caliber on the field and rotate in for Ryan and Beyer.
August 6th, 2012 at 11:51 AM ^
I think it would be more likely that Cam Gordon starts/plays at SAM and Jake Ryan moves to WDE semi-permanently. Ryan has played DE occasionally and has more bulk. If Gordon played WDE, that would be a fourth position change (from WR to S to WLB to SLB to WDE).

6'2", 230? You're thinking of Delonte Hollowell.

I looked on MGoBlue's roster yesterday, looks like most of the starting lineman outside of Barnum are at 300+ lbs. Looks like a good sign. I might be wrong, but I think for most of last year, all the linemen outside of Lewan were under 300.
Good to see them beefing up.
August 6th, 2012 at 10:38 AM ^
Nah, I'm pretty sure most were 300+ except Molk, Miller, and Barnum. Huyge was 306, Mealer was about 310, Schofield might have been listed at 299 but was about 304 according to his dad, Bryant was well over 300, Omameh was at or above 300, etc.

I stand corrected.

I don't know if the Hopkins gain is a bad thing. It would be nice to see him be bigger at fullback.
I would agree though with Magnus that Henry gaining that much weight is probably not a good thing. Of course the recruiting sites may have been a little off, but that seems like a ton (not literally) of weight to gain this quickly. Hopefully he is able to get in shape and push for some playing time or at least push the others and increase the competition.
August 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM ^
My skepticism about Hopkins' gain was partially based on the Spring rumors that he was out of shape at that point.
August 6th, 2012 at 10:31 AM ^
This kid is enormous for a freshman WR. Already as big as Junior Hemingway and the biggest WR on the roster if the weights are correct.
August 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM ^
I've seen some creepy OMG SHIRTLESS pics with Darboh, and the kid is absolutely jacked...
He honestly looks like he's 220 with about 4% body fat

Are they creepy because they're Erin Andrews-style peeping tom pictures...or are they creepy because you're a Facebook stalker?

Perhaps they are creepy because it seems as though David Boston is giving him fitness advice? but that would be more disturbing than creepy.
