OT: SCF Gm 6 Open Thread
LA is up 4-0 in the 2nd. If they hold on for the win, they will become the first team to clinch the Cup at home since 2007.
No M alumni currently playing for LA, unfortunately, so no new Wolverines will get their name on the cup. Jack Johnson has to be pissed he was traded to Columbus, even more than he was before.
EDIT: It's final, LA wins the game 6-1, the series 4-2, and clinches the first Stanley Cup in the history of the Los Angeles Kings franchise.
I've never seen a team get more out of a 5 minute major. I thought the game was pretty much over after the 2nd goal. Now its really over and its getting a little dirty / chippy
Kings got burnt pretty bad on a 5 minute major against the Blues in '98 (I think). Former King Duchene ran the goalie, didn't get a penalty, and then the Kings got called on retaliation. 2 - 0 lead turned into 3 - 2 deficit and there went the series.
Steve Bernier's wikipedia page was destroyed for a while, pretty funny.
I think that the real tragedy here is that if LA holds on, somebody, somewhere, might think of GM Dean Lombardi as something other than an asshat.

New Jersey gets one back, but I agree, it still really looks over at this point.
Stat of the day that I saw earlier on Twitter: LA has (with the goal in this game now) given up 30 goals this postseason. Pittsburgh gave up 30 in 6 games and one round.
I really hate to complain about refs and I believe in clean retaliation, but the Devils got screwed.
First they miss a blatant boarding at center ice and then they set a pick for the Kings by going towards the net instead OF STAYING TO THE BOARDS LIKE THEY SHOULD!!!!!!!!!!
OK, done now, thanks.
It was not way after. Had Volchenkov been able to get to the Kings player attacking, that time in the zone may have ended a lot differently. Because the ref, the Kings were able to get a shot in and it just started a domino effect. It also didn't help having the ref on the ice right by the goal.
I know, slight homerism, but still.
^^^^^^^^how do you get a boarding call at center ice? The ref had to get off of the boards because the kings player was rushing down that side.
"Marty", mocking Brodeur, I think. Seems pretty juvenile, like you are going to get into the head of a 40-year-old Hall of Fame goaltender in the 6th game of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Uh, that Game 7 WCF game against Colorado that the Wings ran out to a 6-0 lead in basically had the entire third period consist of Wings fans chanting "We want Patrick!" after Roy got pulled.
i fought the phoenix traffic to get to my friend's house. he was a huge colorado fan and he threatened to turn off the game. i said, 'no way, dude. i drove all the way up here and we're going to watch it.'
glorious...
Every time I see the Cup in the building it takes me back to special moments waiting for the Wings to hoist it. Nothing like it in sports. One of my favorite memories of college was spraying champagne on State Street when the Wings took it in 2008.
What I care about most in terms of this game, though, is that the Parise talks can finally commence.
Congratulations to the Los Angeles Kings! At long last, Stanley Cup Champions.
I'm watching on CBC, and after announcing some standard stuff about it being the first cup for the franchise, and talking about the current and former players for whom this Cup victory means so much, they were silent for the last 2 minutes of the game, letting the fans and the sounds of the game bring it in to the end. I thought it was a great, classy move.
Jonathan Quick wins the Conn Smythe, no surprise there. Best goalie in the league right now? He played like it during the playoffs.
Also, the annual tradition of the fans booing Gary Bettman. Not as much as usual, but I still heard a few.
here here!
Easily the best championship celebration in all of sports. Hoistin the cup
If only the cup could talk...the stories it'd tell.
I'm pretty sure the Blackhawks all peed in it since they knew there was no way in hell they were going to win again
The best part is, it's just after 8 p.m. in Los Angeles. They have lots of time to party with it all night.
Excellent work by the Kings. No one has won the Cup on home ice since 2007? Madness.
Yup. Also, in 2008 and 2012, Detroit and LA lost home games with a chance to clinch, and in 2009 and 2011, Detroit and Vancouver lost Game 7 at home. Crazy.
Lets not bring up 2009. watching crosby lifting the cup at JLA is one of my worst sport memories of all time.
Yuck...
Shouldn't have been called a five minute major:
I always understood a resulting injury to be the difference between the minor and major.
The refs just have discretion based on the severity. There's nothing explicitly about blood or injuries. It does say though that a major resulting from a hit to the head or face is an automatic game misconduct. But that's not really relevant here because I'm arguing it shouldn't have been a major to begin with.
