To assist in cleansing our collective psyche from yesterday's debacle, we have the 2018 GLI tournament today at Little Ceasars Arena.  It's too bad the hoops game conflicts but hopefully, we have a blowout of Binghamton in process and the we can throw some attention to our hockey team as well.

Thoughts from Saturday Night at Yost

Thoughts from Saturday Night at Yost

I spent Saturday night coping with a few thousand friends at Yost. It was the first game I caught this year, and first in a while. The team looked good! but not great. I thought there were some interesting things that could be relatively easy fixes and that the team should get better as the year goes on.

According to reports, the Humbolt Broncos team bus was T-boned by a semi-truck.  There are fatalaties and serious injuries.  The team is in a league with players 16-20 years old.

Saw it on twitter, link below. The better hockey fans will have to chime in on whether it increases or decreases his chances of leaving after this season. Personally, a senior year in Ann Arbor sounds better than playing for Edmonton, but who knows.

Philly gets a 3rd rounder three years after taking Marody as a sixth. I think it probably indicates how far he has come to improve his value. Winning the B1G scoring title sure helped.

Worded differently: what's an unpopular view that you feel very strongly about for Michigan athletics? Gut-feelings are at home here, but bonus points are awarded (not actually awarded) for some evidence. Examples include stuff like, "Harbaugh is overrated," &c.

Analysis: Michigan was down two of their top-six forwards tonight, but you couldn’t exactly tell. They were able to control the puck for the last 50+ minutes of the game and create chances all over the ice. Calderone scored the lone even-strength goal of the game on a power move that somehow caught Morris off of his near post, and the puck trickled between him and said post. Notre Dame entered the game with a elite defense and arguably the best goaltending in college hockey and the latter is what saved them. I thought Michigan was able to beat the Irish defense with enough consistency to score multiple goals. However, Cale Morris was just as good as advertised (with the help of one large post) and stole Michigan’s pot of gold in the end. Michigan didn’t overwhelm from the house area, but multiple lines were able to generate chances, and that is definitely something to build on for the Wolverines.

Don't look now but proposals are being tossed around for a new arena in downtown Champaign:

I'm still skeptical myself.  I went to Illinois for law school and can report that the U of I is at heart a basketball school.  (Nine of the ten most recent posts at Illinois Loyalty are about hoops recruiting.)  For hockey to survive in C-U they'll really need to draw in the undergrads from St Louis and Chicago -- of which there are plenty -- and then hope they drag in their pals from Illiana -- which is doubtful.

Still, someone in Champaign seems to be giving this some serious thought.

No long stretches without games at Yost like there have been the last couple of years. Interesting that the OSU series is again the same weekend as the Game. The league seems to really want to make that happen (though it's not a terrible idea). I like that ND is a home and home for both series.

Six seasons, 1 NCAA Tourney appearance, a general decline in Michigan State hockey. Here's a link: http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/032117aaa.html

Certainly makes Michigan hockey's offseason potentially more urgent, might change the tenor of Warde and Red's upcoming conversation. Hollis took this long to make this happen so who knows how an MSU coaching search looks this time.

Funny little article I stumbled upon about the hockey team this year. The National Title game seems like an eternity ago *sigh*
