OT: SCF Gm 6 Open Thread
LA is up 4-0 in the 2nd. If they hold on for the win, they will become the first team to clinch the Cup at home since 2007.
No M alumni currently playing for LA, unfortunately, so no new Wolverines will get their name on the cup. Jack Johnson has to be pissed he was traded to Columbus, even more than he was before.
EDIT: It's final, LA wins the game 6-1, the series 4-2, and clinches the first Stanley Cup in the history of the Los Angeles Kings franchise.
I've never seen a team get more out of a 5 minute major. I thought the game was pretty much over after the 2nd goal. Now its really over and its getting a little dirty / chippy
Kings got burnt pretty bad on a 5 minute major against the Blues in '98 (I think). Former King Duchene ran the goalie, didn't get a penalty, and then the Kings got called on retaliation. 2 - 0 lead turned into 3 - 2 deficit and there went the series.
Steve Bernier's wikipedia page was destroyed for a while, pretty funny.
I think that the real tragedy here is that if LA holds on, somebody, somewhere, might think of GM Dean Lombardi as something other than an asshat.

Exactly my biggest fear with the kings winning
New Jersey gets one back, but I agree, it still really looks over at this point.
Stat of the day that I saw earlier on Twitter: LA has (with the goal in this game now) given up 30 goals this postseason. Pittsburgh gave up 30 in 6 games and one round.
Great stat, for sure. What makes it even more amazing is that Philadelphia gave up 26 goals in that series.
Let it be the Kings!
The defensemen play on those last two pp goals of the major was shameful. A little effort on one and a little common sense on the other and this game is only 2-1.
I really hate to complain about refs and I believe in clean retaliation, but the Devils got screwed.
First they miss a blatant boarding at center ice and then they set a pick for the Kings by going towards the net instead OF STAYING TO THE BOARDS LIKE THEY SHOULD!!!!!!!!!!
OK, done now, thanks.
i understand the missed boarding call. that sucks for the devils but refs miss calls all the time. as far as setting the pick the ref shouldnt have been there but hes not the readon la scored. the goal occurred way after the defenseman got back into position. Not his fault at all.
It was not way after. Had Volchenkov been able to get to the Kings player attacking, that time in the zone may have ended a lot differently. Because the ref, the Kings were able to get a shot in and it just started a domino effect. It also didn't help having the ref on the ice right by the goal.
I know, slight homerism, but still.
^^^^^^^^how do you get a boarding call at center ice? The ref had to get off of the boards because the kings player was rushing down that side.
He meant at the red line along the boards.
Not "let's go kings"...
I swore they were saying "bor-ing"...but I don't think so
"Marty", mocking Brodeur, I think. Seems pretty juvenile, like you are going to get into the head of a 40-year-old Hall of Fame goaltender in the 6th game of the Stanley Cup Finals.
We did it to Fleury at the Joe during the '09 Cup Finals
Uh, that Game 7 WCF game against Colorado that the Wings ran out to a 6-0 lead in basically had the entire third period consist of Wings fans chanting "We want Patrick!" after Roy got pulled.
i fought the phoenix traffic to get to my friend's house. he was a huge colorado fan and he threatened to turn off the game. i said, 'no way, dude. i drove all the way up here and we're going to watch it.'
glorious...
I hope you're not trying to suggest that Fleury is a HoF goaltender...
But....well.. The fans will still have fun
Every time I see the Cup in the building it takes me back to special moments waiting for the Wings to hoist it. Nothing like it in sports. One of my favorite memories of college was spraying champagne on State Street when the Wings took it in 2008.
What I care about most in terms of this game, though, is that the Parise talks can finally commence.
Congratulations to the Los Angeles Kings! At long last, Stanley Cup Champions.
Nice F-bomb drop by Dustin Brown
I'm watching on CBC, and after announcing some standard stuff about it being the first cup for the franchise, and talking about the current and former players for whom this Cup victory means so much, they were silent for the last 2 minutes of the game, letting the fans and the sounds of the game bring it in to the end. I thought it was a great, classy move.
Fuck?
Sounded like "that's why we fucking play"
But then nobody in my house even reacted...
But then the commentator said "that's a word he will want back.".n
Jonathan Quick wins the Conn Smythe, no surprise there. Best goalie in the league right now? He played like it during the playoffs.
Also, the annual tradition of the fans booing Gary Bettman. Not as much as usual, but I still heard a few.
Go Kings Go!!!!!!!! Stanley Cup baby!
here here!
Oh, I would have peed myself if he dropped that Cup
Easily the best championship celebration in all of sports. Hoistin the cup
If only the cup could talk...the stories it'd tell.
I'm pretty sure the Blackhawks all peed in it since they knew there was no way in hell they were going to win again
The best part is, it's just after 8 p.m. in Los Angeles. They have lots of time to party with it all night.
Excellent work by the Kings. No one has won the Cup on home ice since 2007? Madness.
Yup. Also, in 2008 and 2012, Detroit and LA lost home games with a chance to clinch, and in 2009 and 2011, Detroit and Vancouver lost Game 7 at home. Crazy.
Lets not bring up 2009. watching crosby lifting the cup at JLA is one of my worst sport memories of all time.
Yuck...
Shouldn't have been called a five minute major:
I always understood a resulting injury to be the difference between the minor and major.
I would have called that a major all day. First, you're correct that injury plays a big part. Second, this wasn't a case of turning into a hit; the .gif doesn't show anything other than the predatory hit I saw live. Bernier deserves all the criticism he gets, IMO.
I think it actually was a case of turning into the hit. If you watch it slowed down you will see that Bernier is already past the goal line before Scuderi made the play to move it on his backhand. His follow through on the backhand is what resulted in him facing the glass. Before the follow through, Bernier was facing into Scuderi's side. If Scuderi had made the play on his forehand, instead, the follow through would have turned him do that the hit was to his front. It was less than one second in real time between when Scuderi made the move to the backhand and Bernier's contact. And Scuderi knew Bernier was coming in. No doubt, out of caution, Bernier should have let up, or not made the hit at all, but I have a problem with the major call there considering the totality of the play. If Scuderi goes forehand or just eats it in the corner, the contact never ends up to his back, so I have a difficult time seeing how Scuderi didn't turn into it. Penalty yes, major no. This play was the logical result of the inconsistent officiating and supplemental discipline all postseason.
The refs just have discretion based on the severity. There's nothing explicitly about blood or injuries. It does say though that a major resulting from a hit to the head or face is an automatic game misconduct. But that's not really relevant here because I'm arguing it shouldn't have been a major to begin with.
My 8 year old daughter saw Dustin Brown's toothless smile and decided she really doesn't want to play hockey after all.
Edit: I did not do that.
I believe since Jack Johnson played in 61 games for the Kings his name will at least appear on the cup. Too bad he couldn't hoist it though.
A prerequisite to the games played rule is actually being with the organization when the Cup is won. The only way he could get on is if the Kings petition for him to be put on.
