Next year's NFL draft: any one on M roster a possible first rounder?

Submitted by team126 on

From TTB's scholarship count article, here is a list of M players eligible to be drafted next year (scholarship players only).

I see these players have potentials to be first rounder, provided they have a really good 2012-2013 season.

  • Denard Robinson
  • William Campbell (!)
  • Fitzgerald Toussaint
  • Taylor Lewan

Frankly, I don't see any first rounders currently, especially after watching the recent draft unfold. All the pre-draft hype is just that, hype. Who'd have thunk so many Illini would get taken early, while the Rimington Award winner stays on the board until the last round?

I hope they all perform tremendously well this season, but I don't think we have any first rounders.

Lewan will be a first rounder when he leaves, I think it's just a matter of how high.  He's got prototypical left tackle size and quickness, he's got the mean streak, his production has already been good, he's started for basically two years already, and he continues to improve.  The biggest negative was his personal foul issues but he already cut back on those this past season.

I'll echo a lot of the sentiment already posted: Lewan is tops on the list as far as first round potential, even if he leaves early. I sure hope he stays for his senior year though. The only other one I see with a legit shot is Fitz if he stays healthy and productive through his senior year.

True Juniors and Redshirt Sophmores are also eligible.
You need to be three years removed from high school, not four.

I don't know that it adds anyone who is a likely first rounder. There aren't may players who are redshirt sophmores that are ready to go anyways from any school.

It goes without saying that getting drafted in any round in the NFL is a hell of an accomplishment and praise worthy, and even those undrafted but signed have a chance to play on Sundays.

Also, even if a player has a hugely productive season, he's still in competition with other players in the draft.  If he's not considered one of the top 2-3 at his position, he usually doesn't have much shot at the first round.  It is kind of fun to speculate about this, but unless we take the time to look at every top player across the country, there's no way to even have an educated guess about what round a player will go, and some years there may be a lot of really good players at a particular position, making a first round selection more difficult.

Lewan could jump up to rounds 2 or 3 with a good year, Denard could go rounds 3 to 5, Campbell is a wildcard (he would need to blow up this year to get attention), and I would be pretty surprised if Roundtree got drafted. Fitz would be better served staying. He has a 1.5 year resume and injury concerns, but if he could add another year to that he'd be in pretty good shape.

If someone plays out of their mind I could see someone moving up to 2nd or late first round. Rich Rod really screwed us as far as NFL talent. D Rob will not get drafted until the very late rounds, unless he smokes it at Alabama. He is too small and injury prone. He is tough though playing through many injuries. Can he catch the football? Nobody knows, so it will be a huge gamble for a team. He definitely can't protect the football, and will need to improve with fumbles. He has slim to zero chance of being an NFL quarterback. He is my favorite college player, so I pray he improves and can make it in at a WR. If he was taller and could throw a spiral more often he could get in as a QB.

Don't get me wrong, I love Roy, and the game winner Under the Lights will endeer him to me forever. But someone please tell me why in the world I keep seeing his nome come up on these threads as a potential high draft choice next year? I'll honestly be surprised if he gets drafted at all.

He's pretty slow, he runs average routes, he's terrible at getting separation, and has avarage hands. His big numbers two years ago were entirely a product of the offense he was in, and probably would have been put up by anyone who was playing that position.

Again, I hope the best for him and his future, and I'm not trying to put down a Michigan guy, but I think a lot of people here have unrealistic expectations for this kid.

bother prognosticating about the draft a day after the last one ended?  Way-too-early mock drafts are the most hilarious travesties I've ever witnessed - with every "expert"(read: guys who are about as dumb as a message board poster getting paid to write for SI.com) projecting shit like Vontaze Burfict and Travis Lewis being shoo-in 1st rounders a year ago.  Oops.

And yeah, the only one with a prayer of being a day one pick is Taylor Lewan. Honestly, I'd be very happy for Roy if he evens gets drafted.

Draftniks need to start somewhere. I know that sounds dumb, but they have been watching tape and usually know a list of really good players. Of course, injuries and the ebb and flow of playinig quality will change their list, but its not like the lists are baseless and random-- or that they matter all that much.

Lewan is a sure fire first round pick if he comes out. He's huge, quick, and and elite athlete at that position. Add in tenacity, competitive nature, and smarts, and no way he doesn't go in the first. He needs to get a little bigger, that's it. Remember #20 pick of the first round, Adrian Clayborn from Iowa? Stoned by RS freshman Lewan. We'll know on Denard and the others after this year, though Robinson is a once-a-gen-type playmaker running with the ball in his hands.

none. maybe Lewan, maybe. tree wont get drafted. denard will go around the 4-5th but as an athlete and thats about it. would take BWC having a monster year for him to even get drafted. Kovaks and others will be UFAs

What amazed me this year was reading yesterday that IL had two first rounders and two second rounders.  And they were even high second rounders - i.e. 4 of the top 50 picks to this school which did nothing in the Big 10.  Shows you how important coaching is!
