Carl Hagelin Faces Disciplinary Hearing
NEW YORK -- Rangers rookie Carl Hagelin has a hearing scheduled Sunday for his hit on Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson during Ottawa's 3-2 overtime win against New York on Saturday.
Hagelin earned a five-minute elbowing major for the play at 10:32 of the second period. Alfredsson left the game and did not return.
A little surprised as this type of aggression was never seen at U-M or to date for the Rangers but this sort of thing is far from unordinary in the NHL playoffs.
It was a high hit, but there's no way Hagelin can get more than a fine for that after the Weber decision.
Wanna bet? Your opinion is way too logical. I wouldn't be surprised if the NHL just kicked him out of the league.
Comparing Weber's play and Hagelin's is like comparing apples and oranges. All season the league has been trying to get rid of plays exactly like Carl's (high elbows along the boards). Weber, although dirty as shit, isnt really what the league is trying to get rid of. If Carl isn't suspended i will be very surprised.
Weber is a star and Hagelin is not...he is in danger in this NHL
and there we see the hypocrisy of Bettman's NHL
I don't know how this earns a hearing but Weber just has to buy a new tv for the Commish's office.. Oh wait, yes I do. Bettman hates the Red Wings.
In what world is a punch that doesn't injure a player, as bad as an elbow to the side of the head? Alfredsson is 39 with a prior concussion this season, his career may be over.
Did you watch the Weber clip? You know, the one where he grabs Zetterberg by the head and slams him into the glass multiple times, cracking his helmet in two places? Hagelin’s can plausibly be explained away as lack of discipline. Weber’s was malicious.
Of course it was malicious, except the outcome was nothing. Zetterburg missed no time, and was able to get up and skate off on his own. Every homer on this board is acting like this was McSorley on Brashear and it wasn't.
So you can do whatever you want to a guy as long as it doesn't injure him and no penalties should be assessed.
Sorry, but Red Wing fans are going to continue to be convinced the league hastes us until they give us a reason to believe otherwise. That slap on the wrist for Weber's actions is a joke. They were even joking about it in practice the next day. Nashville finds it FUNNY that Weber got away with clear intent to cause a head injury.
When has the NHL ever been tough with discipline? Chara threw Pacioretty into the turnbuckle and snapped his neck, didn't miss a single game.
I didn't say he shouldn't be suspended but The NHL isn't a league that goes hard with disipline, which is why the longest suspension in NHL history was only 30 games.
McSorely asks if you have heard of him?
Not that i disagree with your main premise that they aren't tough on discipline.
McSorly missed the last 23 games of a terrible season for Boston, for his baseball bat swing to Brasher's head. Maybe it's just me but I think that was a weak suspension too.
Bertuzzi only got 20 games.
but after he was found guilty in court they subsequently suspended him for a full season, which therby forced his retirement.
It's all about relativity. The fact that Hagelin was subjected to a hearing while Weber got a glorified parking ticket is unacceptable.

Z didn't get seriously hurt so no suspension? That makes sense, after all in every country I know of attempted murder isn't against the law.
Results-based officiating and punishments are terrible ideas. Should Olli Jokinen get tossed out of the league for the skate to Zednik's throat?
Not that it's a great idea when talking about supplemental discipline, but I love the fact that hockey allows a more severe penalty for illegal plays that cause injuries. How ridiculous is it that Tom Gholston could have ended Denard's career at the cost of fifteen yards? Compare that to hockey where he could (and probably should have) been assessed a match penalty that banned him from team contact before a hearing with a maximum punishment of lifetime banishment, not to mention a five minute major.
In my opinion, hockey is just that much better for better tacking on additional penalties for dirty play causing injuries.
But CenterIce is arguing purely from a results standpoint.
Remember Kronwall's legal hit on Marty Havlat a few years ago?
Free the sweede!
Swede on swede violence.
It looked like a pretty dirty game overall. Just from watching the highlights, Carl's hit was at best the 3rd or 4th worst hit in that game
The cheap shot on Boyle was ugly. Ottawa's Carkner really looked like a jackass
Hagelin skated after the hearing, which most likely means he is playing next game.
He didn't have full participation but he did skate with the team.
Zetterberg was ok after the Weber hit. Alfredsson was not. Shanahan was quoted today as saying that they look at the harm done in assessing the fine/suspensions. Sucks b/c the intent to harm seems to have been more with Weber than with Hagelin.
OT question for your hockey folk - do you have any suggestions for Web sites to check hockey scores on Blackberries? I routinely use ESPN b/c it is fast and current, but I cannot stomach that ESPN puts crappy regular season NBA games on its front page over NHL playoff games. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Tnx.

The blackberry app is apparently only available in Canada! LOLBlackberry.
He got three games for it. Three. Meanwhile, Weber gets a joke of a fine, and I highly doubt Neal's gonna get anything for attempting to concuss two Flyers today. The NHL has no hope for discipline.
The standard for years has been one game in the playoffs equals two in the regular season. That means that this suspension was worse than Keith's for knocking out Daniel Sedin (who still isn't back). I honestly don't get this one. Basically, I've lost faith in the NHL to ever get it right.
In comparison to what Keith did,the KH elbow wasn't even in the same stratosphere.
I can see a Hagelin suspension for one game, but this is pretty ridiculous. Weber certainly should have been suspended for at least one game. I cannot comprehend why the resulting injury has anything to do with the decision to suspend. The only thing that should matter is intent, period. It makes no sense. The majority of injuries are not a result of dirty plays.
obviously did not "aim high", like the guys during the Florida/NJ game intermission asserted. Carl is definitely a lover, not a fighter, I mean, look at that face!
Hagelin receives three games. LOLWEBERFINELOL
This suspension was a bit excessive, but only truly comical when compared with the Weber non-punishment.

I have to think that not wanting to appear biased in the Wings favor played into that decision. It's really the only thing that remotely makes sense on that one.
Even then, he's just not competent if that was a factor in his ruling. Either way, I think the post above is correct: he lost a ton of respect from a lot of the people who loved him as a player in the past few days.

It's like going to work for the NHL melts your brain or something. The utter lack of consistency in his penalties make absolutely no sense at all. How you can watch a guy intentionally grab someone and WWE him into the glass BREAKING HIS HELMET and not even suspend him is ridiculous.

Inconsistent decision making from the league sure, but Hagelin still needed to be suspended. That shit doesn't fly.
