"Fair" and "NCAA" don't exactly go hand in hand...
December 18th, 2011 at 8:44 PM ^
Osu is all of a sudden snatching up 5 star recruits left and right. I am annoyed and concerned.
December 18th, 2011 at 8:47 PM ^
There seem to be a lot of people here clinging to the belief that the "sanctions"—if there any at all—will amount to anything more than a limp slap on the wrist. They won't. Gorden Gee has his lips firmly wrapped around Mark Emmert's pecker (or is it the other way around) and Gene Smith is standing a few steps back with a big club in case Gee isn't successful.
December 18th, 2011 at 11:49 PM ^
Don, you're always pretty close to the truth which will likely leave us all disappointed once the so-called Ohio "sanctions" are revealed.
If six months ago, someone had told us that by the end of the year a B10 University AD and President would be forced out in disgrace, most would not likely have come up with Penn St. The irony, of course, is that not only has Ohio been largely unscathed since The Vest's ouster, but they're picking the meat off the bones of the Nittany Lion carcass.
Oh yes. It's on now.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:07 AM ^
Don, you're clinging to this idea that Ohio and their administration has been accurate in their prediction of the outcome of anything related to this series of scandals over the past year. Weren't the reinstated players last December not indicative of no further issues? Wasn't Tressel not going to fire Gee in March? Wasn't August the last anyone in Ohio was going to hear about hearings/potential punishments (I think Ramzy had a god damned barbecue and we heard just these same ridiculous statements)...oh, and in September weren't Posey and the other employees of Bob Digeronimo not anything too serious?
If Gee and Smith were so influential you'd think they might do a little better than getting their best head coach in a generation axed. If they were so relevant to the NCAA they could have saved him. If they held so much influence all of this would have been handled in August, right?
At the end of the day, the NCAA will have to measure it's ruling in terms of what to do about USC, Oregon, North Carolina and Miami. The most contentious of these will be the USC and PAC lobby as the ban on USC has literally cost their members millions of dollars potentially. Anything not in line with SC will cause NCAA level armageddon. There is, of course, this whole other issue with ESPN for Ohio as well.
As for your premise that Ohio is so influential with the NCAA it sure doesn't look like it's done a hell of a lot of good to date.

People need to stop worrying about what other teams are doing. Notre Dame has had elite recruiting classes the last 15 years and won like 2 bowl games. Meyer has a lot to prove now that his doesn't have his old staff. Did anyone think the combination of Meyer/OSU wasn't going to reel in huge recruits?
December 18th, 2011 at 9:07 PM ^
HATE OHIO STATE.... I love how they are the biggest fucking cheaters and the NCAA isn't going to do a fucking thing. It's so pathetic how college football is losing its prestige... I can't wait until with bitch slap those faggots in their house next year... C'mon Hoke let's do some damage
December 18th, 2011 at 9:45 PM ^
I understand that you really, really, really hate Ohio State. But calling them "faggots" makes you sound like one of them.
December 18th, 2011 at 10:11 PM ^
Good point... I take back that ignorant comment as I was rambling on.
December 18th, 2011 at 11:24 PM ^
you're only allowed to use those words if you make up a story and put them into the mouths of our AD and long time broadcaster
Then everybody fucking loves it

So once upon a time, Urban Meyer had the smarts to assemble a tremendous staff at Florida, but now, for some reason nobody explains, he no longer has the ability to identify and hire a new staff of quality assistants.
December 18th, 2011 at 10:16 PM ^
Ya, I mean his staffs at BG and at Utah (where he went undefeated) must have sucked. Whoever said that he has to prove he doesnt have his old staff is a fool. And I know we rip on Fickell alot but this guy is a solid Defensive coach. Their OC Herman has done big things everywhere he has been too. Meyer is a great coach, he wins, hes won without Mattison.
December 18th, 2011 at 11:49 PM ^
Everyone calm down!! Chris Spielman made the most telling comment about the rivalryduring "the Game". Luke Fickell lost three times to the Wolverines once the 'eyes were ranked #5 and twice they were ranked #2. Michigan has beaten Ohio teams they weren't supposed to beat in the past. tsiO has talent and they always will, but Hoke and his staff have done something RR and Carr (to a lesser extent) didn't do. They've given this team a confidence in themselves. As far as nothing else happening to tsiO with the NCAA. I think Smith and Gee have told Meyer that everything is going to be fine, why because if they told him that they were going to get hammered, would he have taken the job. Remember these are the people who said tsiO didn't have a "systemic problem" as it's turned out, they were either completely clueless or lying through their teeth. Either way I don't think Meyer has any idea what the sanctions are going to be. And if (a big if, I know) he gets blindsided by the NCAA, who's to say things between Meyer and tsiO don't go south quickly. There's the potential for some serious fireworks. I don't have my popcorn on hand, but the bag of Orville Redenbacher, is beside the microwave just in case.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:28 AM ^
It's not as if the Gee/Smith alliance has masterfully handled this issue since day 1.
December 18th, 2011 at 11:53 PM ^
Seriously that is what their fans wear.
December 18th, 2011 at 11:57 PM ^
Good for Noah Spence. Now he can count his stars while he's being pancaked by our o-line. Hope he enjoys the view.

Terms of the deal undisclosed...

I don't understand why people are discredting Urban's career as a product of his assistants. Yes, Urban has been backed-up by a good staff during of his career, but he has had success everywhere he's been with or without them. Dan Mullen wasn't always been his OC, plus Urban is a offensive head coach so its not like he needs a superstar OC to run his spread in the first place.
Yes, Greg Mattison is a great defensive mind, but Urban won at Utah, Bowling Green, and the last two years of Florida without him (including the 2009 National Championship). Also Luke Fickell is a pretty impressive defensive coordinator in his own right. Fickell was Tressel's co-DC the last 5 years, and probably had a bigger impact than Heacock in those years. (Honestly, I think Heacock has been serving as a figure head for the past half-decade because OSU wouldn't fire him out of loyalty especially since he was not detrimental to the program).
Also other than Tat-gate and the summer jobs, all the other claims have yet to be substantiated. Or is everyone's memory to short to remember all the claims the media made towards Michigan/RichRod and co. that turned out to be false in the end? I, for one, am going to wait until the NCAA completes their investigation before passing judgement on whether Tressel's decade of dominance was honorable or not.
Overall, I am excited for the future. The Big Ten is gaining some new blood, and perhaps a return to dominance. "The Game" is on its way to being exciting again, a second "Ten-Year War," hopefully. I welcome the change.

December 19th, 2011 at 8:48 AM ^
I really don't like this developing trend.
3 ESPN 150 recruits in one week...
December 19th, 2011 at 9:08 AM ^
This is ridiculous...OSU is going to walk away with nothing more than a slap on the wrist when their infractions approached USC status. They keep rolling along like nothing ever happened. Thank you NCAA for maintaining the "excellence" you so obviously strive to achieve.

And then a huge tiger came and ripped the effing s-h out of all those horrible things that make me sad.
