TomVH: 2012 WR Monty Madaris Offered
I had been keeping in touch with Moeller WR Monty Madaris (6'2", 190 lbs) for some time now because I figured that Michigan would eventually come calling. He told me tonight that Michigan did in fact offer him.
He now holds offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Florida State, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, MSU, and Nebraska among others.
Here's what he had to say about the offer, visiting soon, and when he wants to make a decision:
Coach Smith said they liked my film and they are looking forward to getting me up there for a visit soon. I'll be up for the BBQ on the 31st. Michigan is near the top of my list [now] for sure. They are one of the schools that I'm evaluating more than others. I have no idea when I want to make my decision but I would like to make it soon.
Here's a look at his film. We'll know more about his interest level once he gets on campus. He does like Ohio State and Michigan State, too.
How does he compare to the Payton/Stanford/Burbridge/Darboh/Chesson both in talent and style?
I posted this kid's highlights about a month ago and am glad to see that we finally offered. Tom's analysis below confirms that Madaris is a solid prospect that we would be happy to get. That said, when you compare highlights (our primary source of info) Burbridge appears to be on another level athletically from all of the other wr prospects - including Payton. Let's hope he gets his grades up and joins his mates at the Big House.... and Madaris would make a great second wr to go with him.
Agree about your comment on Burbridge. He so explosive, I really hope he's part of this class. His 4.4 speed looks to be legit.
Someone posted that Allen Trieu from Scout said that Stanford could drop in the rankings. That could mean that Madaris might be the top rated WR in Ohio when it is all said and done. I guess we will have to see when the new rankings come out.
Sparty will explode if he goes blue
He is now number one on my wish list. Both because he looks like an excellent WR, and because Sparty boards would melt down if he came to UM. They've been considering him theirs to lose for awhile now.
Thanks Tom
I'm a little surprised we hadn't offered him yet. State really wants this kid.
I was surprised too. I think he has a good idea of who he's really evaluating he just doesn't want to come out with that to the public yet.
how into evaluating talent you are (or if you even consider yourself good at that aspect), but how do you like this kid compared to say, Burbridge or Stanford.
I don't consider myself an evaluator of talent. There's probably a lot of people on this board better at that than I am. If you want my opinion though, I don't think he and Stanford are comparable.
Stanford is a 6'5" jump ball receiver. Judging by Monty's film he's used a lot differently than Stanford is. He's in the wildcat, taking direct snaps, coming across from the slot, he's taking plays across the field, etc.
I like his film, though. I think he's versatile and big enough that he could fill a few different spots and be a different kind of threat than Stanford. Doesn't look like he has awesome speed, but good enough, good hands, a couple plays he gets dirty and blocks downfield. That's great to see for a receiver in high school. Looks like he can make a play after the catch too, so I really like the offer. I think he would fit in well with the offense.
seems like a pretty good evaluation to me
l like him:
BALLLLLLER!!!
He has to talk over the visit with his parents, but he said he's pretty sure they will be able to make it up for that.
Chesson or this kid would be a nice pick up if we had the numbers
I upvoted you. Great line, great episode, great show.
lol thanks. Honestly though which do you guys prefer? Chesson or Madaris? Madaris definately gets it in this video. His speed seems to be a concern, also weird body control but hey whatever works I guess. He has great field vision and sets up blockers on his slants/outs/and screens. A year of S&C could turn him into a nice wideout.
While watching Chesson play he reminds me more of a traditional Lloyd wr. While both Chesson an Madaris are athletic, they are two different kinds. Chesson has better speed and an initial cut. He is a big play deep ball / diving catch / go up get it / deliver a hit and plow into the endzone dragging two dbs with him. IMO I think Chesson has the bigger upside and I hope he commits at the BBQ...

Chesson Junior Highlights
Honestly, Payton, Burbridge, Stanford, and now Madaris are ahead of Chesson for me personally.
I'd love to get Burbridge and Stanford, because it seems like the skill sets of Madaris and Burbridge are pretty similar, and then Stanford is a deep ball threat, which we desperately need
I actually like Chesson's highlights better than Madaris'. I think it was more a product of how they were used in their respective offenses. I saw more reciever abilities from Chesson. I think this is mainly, because his team uses him for a variety of routes. I was impressed by Madaris' elusiveness, but I didnt see enough of him running routes and catching the ball.
Shut up, brown Jamie Lee Curtis.
My cousins go to this school so I can find out a little more about how this kid is as a person too. One actually just graduated last year so he may have met monty as a freshmen.
Either way, we need a WR and Monty seems like he could do well. However, I didnt watch his whole film so I am wondering just how good he can be playing deeper routes. He does have a nice catch about 1/4 of the way through though over two defenders.
Just to give you a hard time, wouldn't your post have been more informative if you made it AFTER talking to your cousin and watching the full clip?
...Ferguson. Turd move.
Read misopogon's "gentlemen of ohio" article in msp and are executing step 1 - infiltrate sw Ohio.
So whats the guest list we know now and who might commit that weekend

<br>On MM great film seems like a special ATH
If they want him he's good....Given his eagerness to get to the BBQ sounds like we have a great shot.
another good offer, but I dunno seems like we are missing that braylon type, i really miss having a tall receaver you can throw the jump ball to in the endzone, not much a defence can do against such a receaver.
That's what the Stanford offer is for, IMO. 6'4 maybe 6'5? That's why it'd be nice to take two WRs, one shifty quick guy and one deep ball threat
I was trying to figure out which of your comments to hop on. I was going to comment along these lines on one of your comments above. I don't really like to say that we should just get a wide receiver. We need to decide what type of wide out we want.
Stanford seems like te get it up and he'll get it type player. We definitely need that, but some of the other receivers seems to have more tools, and most of that from speed. I still like Stanford a lot, but his speed has become a concern for me. Madaris, Payton, Burbridge have that extra gear. Regardless, we'd be lucky to have any of them and Chesson would be a good addition as well.
Do you realize that Madaris is listed at 6'2" going into his Senior season with more time to grow? Edwards is only 6'3". He seems pretty good after the catch on those short crossing routes (see West Coast offense).
Funchess is 6'5" and at least 215 with excellent athleticism and ball skills so your endzone specialist for jump balls and fades is already on board.
Pretty sure Funchess is gonna be a pure TE, though, and I'm not sure we'll see TE's running fades very often. He should be extremely valuable to have in the passing game, though
...is a quality guy. OSU fans want him pretty bad too, many like him better than Stanford.
I think this spot is going to fill pretty soon.
2.8 GPA maybe he might be better at State
Really? You had to take a shot at a HS kid's GPA?
I hope that was just a shot at State. Archbishop Moeller is a very highly regarded academic school as well as a powerhouse in football and wrestling.
... is really slow.
Not really a huge fan of this offer.
[insert "trust the coaches" comments here]
When did a 4.5 40 become really slow?
He ran a 4.43 at MSU's camp earlier this week.. How much faster do you want?
I think Madaris looks like he's going slow in the videos because he's not exploding past guys, but then when you see him continually running past guys, you can see he has a lot of wheels. Was the 4.43 electronically timed? Because that would be blazing speed.
Is it...
Muh-dare-iss?
Mah-dah-ree?
Saw him play a couple of times last year. He's as good as advertised. He plays bigger than 6'2" if that makes sense.
A black guy named Monty? That is like when I dated a white girl named Kisha. Bizarro universe.
It seems like we don't have that many slots left. But it sounds like any one of these guys (Burbridge, Stanford, or Madaris) could work well possibly. What about the guy who de-committed from USC who had an interest in U-M? Can't remember his name. Personally, I like Stanford's size. We lack a tall wideout who can play jump ball on the deep passes. We'll probably just have to see how their senior seasons develop and go from there.
As a HS WR coach can tell you there a lot of things to like about this kid, especially because he hasn't even played as a senior yet. I also have a few concerns though.
Positives:
Willingness to go anywhere on the field to make a play. Sharp route runner for a HS Junior, it will only get better, he creates separation with just a quick jolt gotta love that. He catches the ball away from his body which is a bonus. He is willing to block, not very good and far as hand placement goes ( just from watching a couple plays on his film though).
Negatives:
I almost caught myself yelling at his highlight film, his running backward to make a play won't last when he gets to the next level, but that is coachable. Seems like more of a possession guy at the next level, although he makes a lot of plays, now I think he may have to adjust his game at the next level.
All in all I think he is a good prospect, and it's a good offer. I hope we get him because with good coaching he could be an all Big 10'er. Thanks for reading my small film break down lol.
Go Blue!
Good insight, feel free to post more. How do you feel about Stanford/Payton/Chessen?
