If Bernie Mac can get do it, why did it take Jeter so long?
Michigan man ....Our own Eric Champnella (a great guy too, knew him well in the day)
couldn't happen to a classier guy!
Go Yanks!!!!
On a homer too. Couldn't have written it any better.
I believe he and Wade Boggs are the only two to get #3,000 on a homer.
The only thing better than seeing him hit that homer is the Yankees winning the World Series. Derek is by far my favorite player of all time and always will be. Congrats!
He might have. Would remind me of when Bret Favre fell down and "gave" the sack record to Michael Strahan.
This has to be a joke. You think David Price grooved a slider so Jeter can get 3000? That's delusional. Did pitchers groove the other 2999? You may not like him, but give him some respect.
Relax. I never said I didn't like the guy. He is definitely my favorite Yankee. The man is a class act, originally from Michigan, and a UofM fan. What is there not to like about him? (Besides being a Yankee) I was just adding to the theory brought up by the previous poster. I don't really think that happened but it's a possibility.
no. it's not.
It's funny...now that I think about it, MLB pitchers are in the business of hurting their teams so that a future Hall of Famer reaches a milestone a game or two earlier. Thanks for reminding me. By the way, check Price's twitter account. He wasn't too happy about giving up 3000.
the game was in doubt, dude
Knows how to do it in style!!!!!! Congrats Derek, great accomplishment and great career!
He's only the 28th player in MLB history to get there. Congrats, Mr. Jeter.
The hardest-to-hate player in the sordid history of the New York Yankees.
Does he "get it"?
Granderson is pretty hard to hate as well.
Anyone who thinks that David Price would serve up a home run in a situation like that is either delusional, or a Red Sox fan...maybe both.
Don't those two things go hand in hand?
I hate the Yankees, but I can't hate Jeter. Congrats to him!
now ESPN can get back to talking about baseball things that actually matter.
LOL I know right. I HAVE to like Jeter because he went to Michigan? This guy isn't as honorable as you all seem to think.
Please explain because that is one of the most ignorant comments I've ever seen. What makes him not honorable?
Cabrera's such a role model though. Go buy his jersey instead.
ed: meant for the dude above you
but ESPN along with others like yahoo sports were really obsessing over it. On another board, someone brought up that Jim Thome is at 597 homeruns, and hasn't gotten any attention, even though 600 is a far more exclusive club, indeed if you take out those supsected or found guilty of steroids, that club has Ruth, Mays, Aaron and Griffey.
Let's celebrate the achievement and also get back to the pennant races, it's a valid point.
Do we know that Thome was/is clean? He played during the steroid era as well. It may be unfair, but in a lot of fans' eyes, every power hitter from that time period has to be viewed with suspicion.
I hate to say it, but I have to agree. I even have my doubts with Griffey, considering all the injuries. It wouldn't shock me if he used anything banned to help recuperate.
Stole your girlfriend, eh?
Congrats to jeter, but thank god I won't have to hear about him chasing 3000 anymore.
Also, congrats to jeter, lol @ the yankees for his new contract.
Got a double in his next at bat. Three for three so far. Just passed Clemente on the list. Keep going Derek. Go Yanks!
Classy and talented. He rev'd it up and got it at home.
Hate the Yankees, hate the guy. He's pure smarm and vastly overrated. Virtually nothing in sports would give me more joy then him being conclusively linked to steroids.
or Jeter all you want, but he's one of the 10 greatest SS to ever play the game, as considered so in wOBA (weighted on base average), RC+ (runs created), and WAR (wins above replacement). He isn't a very good defender, but he's easily one of the best hitting players the position has ever seen.
He got 3000 and he's 4 for 4 in the seventh inning of this game. He has always been able to amp up the focus when the spotlight is the brightest. Cogratulations to my favorite player in MLB.
Live in NY and yesterday before the Yankee Rays game YES Network did a piece on the guy who scouted Jeter. Was really interesting that the reason Jeter was even available at the 6th pick was due to everyone being "convinced" he was attending Michigan. The scout told the Yankees "the only place this kid is going is Cooperstown" and convinced them to take the chance.
Really would have loved to see him play for Michigan in the early 1990's but when the Yankee's and their money come calling I think you go.
Drew Henson would have a hard time agreeing with that statement nowadays.
The most famous person from Kalamazoo by far.
Too bad he has to wear that rag of a uniform.
from the Zoo and proud to call myself a Yankees fan. Congrats Jeter
Jeter never disappoints
Also glad to see a Michigan Fan hit 3,000.
He's a class act. Great player, stays out of trouble, he's a team player, and he might be one of the only players in the league who can be considered a role model.
Great day for him today, 5/5 and the game winning hit in the 8th
I'm watching the post-game show. The 23 year old guy who caught the ball has given the ball back to Jeter and didn't want anything. He said he's young and has time in his life to make money. How refreshing. The Yanks are going to take care of him though. He's getting front row seats for tomorrow, suite seats for the rest of the year, and 3 Jeter autographed balls and bats. Bu hats off to the kid.
Not a huge Thome fan, but the amount of publicity Jeter has gotten for knocking at the door of a club that has 26 other members (3,000 hits) compared to Thome getting near a mark that only seven others have attained (600 homers, and three of those guys are on the steroid list) is just obscene.
Not Jeter's fault, but the EastCoast Sports Programming Network reigns again...
I remember the Jeter vs. Nomar debate and the Nomar's Better (clap, clap, clap-clap-clap) chants in Fenway. Turns out we were wrong about that one. I've hated the guy for over 15 years now but he's one of the all time greats.
