corner 3s are what hurt the 1-3-1. valentine is the only one that can hit those. and i think he will need to help the guards up top in breaking through that zone.
that said, JB will definitely mix it up. he may even extend his 2-3 zone hybrid to make it difficult to shoot 3s.
i welcome all plays set up for dawson, schilling and costello.
|4 hours 23 min ago||well||
easy to suspend rice when he is currently out with injury for another few weeks. lets see what happens come march. if he is done for the year, i will respect groce more (caveat to not knowing what the infractions are).
|4 hours 32 min ago||1-3-1||
break it out and play aggressively up top. create those TOs. sparty stinks in the paint in the half court offense. dawson, schilling and costello get most of their points on second chance putbacks or on the break.
and spike, please break out of you january slump and hit some 3s. zero 3s made in his last six games. not gonna cut it, especially with walton limited.

this can't be a good sign.
|6 hours 31 min ago||higdon||
that last name sounds familiar. i seem to recall a WR that may have played for iowa in the past.
edit: there was a TE that played for osu in the late 80s. that must be it. i'm old.
|6 hours 39 min ago||great idea||
especially if we have an extra scholarship come signing day. i'm a bit worried about our punting/kicking this coming year. more depth is good.
|21 hours 33 min ago||crap||
nice start to the weekend. hopefully, JB can salvage it.
winning a square or two on my super bowl grids would be nice too.
|23 hours 6 min ago||doyle||
in the first clip against wisky doyle performed the hard edge well. then ran over to contest the dekker 3 which was missed. then he got lazy. he allowed dekker to run right by him and get an easy follow up basket.
that basket was the difference in winning that game in regulation. ah, the little things that rarely get noticed.
|23 hours 8 min ago||agree||
UM better hard hedge Trice on sunday. contain him and play aggressively on the boards (like against wisky) and UM can pull the upset.
|1 day 6 hours ago||i completely agree||
he we are having an awful season, yet we a currently tied for second in the BIG. how times have changed. now, i know we won't finish that high. if we get to 9-9 in the BIG, it will be one helluva coaching job by JB. and the team will be better next year.
|1 day 7 hours ago||msu||
i really don't think they land that many top 20 players; at least not anywhere close to KY, duke, UNC, Kansas, AZ or even OSU. i bet those schools get over half of the top 20 players every year.
|1 day 7 hours ago||well||
i believe he is referring to landing some obvious studs from day 1. booker or blackman would look pretty good right now.
honestly, though, i was really surprised at the lack of interest in dawkins and maar, even before they stepped on campus. dawkins is an athletic freak with a decent looking shot. and maar was all state all 4 years in PA, iirc, and he's 6'4" slasher.
but, ya, they both will probably declare for the nba after next year.
|1 day 7 hours ago||irvin was a 5 star too||
chatman was a borderline 5*, depending on which recruiting site you go to.
|1 day 7 hours ago||it's becoming an unfortunate pattern||
i wonder if any competing coaches see who JB is targeting and perk their ears up.
|1 day 7 hours ago||well 2015 is disappointing||
but JB has landed a top 30 recruit each of the last 3 years at the time of their commitment:
McGary, Irvin and Chatman. Plus, GRIII blew up and ended up in the top 30, iirc. he also landed several other top 100 players to support those studs above. I would call that good recruiting. 2014 was weird in that we lost 3-4 players that I'm sure JB didn't think he would be losing, so he had to take flyers on last minute guys.
that said, he has a solid core of players now which can compete for the BIG title next year and beyond, but imo, he definitely needs to land either a big time scorer or point guard (top 30) in 2016 to be a top 10 team.
|1 day 8 hours ago||10 wins in 2015||
now that's some serious kool aid, given our QB situation. i think anything above 7 is a bonus next year with 10 being realistic in 2016, again if we get some good QB play.
|2 days 3 hours ago||haha||
don't ask purdue and IU fans how matta does so when in Indy.
|2 days 3 hours ago||recruiting||
beilein better land one of those stud point guards for 2016. it is an absolute must to keep the gravy train rolling. do that and this team is back to competing for BIG titles (and beyond) for the next several years.
|2 days 3 hours ago||my guess||
is that at least half of the top 100 players each year stay 4 years. unfortunately, all of ours have left early thus far under beilein, plus a few other guys not ranked in the top 100.
|2 days 3 hours ago||walton||
your comments are off. walton is a solid if not very good shooter. he had a rough patch this year, but he will be on the plus side of 40% 3-pt accuracy when he leaves. i would wager he will be a first or second team all big ten performer before he is done too.
ya, he may "not be even as good" as DMo as a soph, but DMo turned pro after his Soph year. unfair comparison.

the 3rd stall in the bathroom on 6th douglass my freshman year (82-83) had some of the witiest quips. i will never forget one in particular:
one guy wrote the common saying "Jesus saves!"
right underneath another guy replied "...and Gretzky scores on the rebound."

with the sister hall was pretty epic. life was simpler back then.
|3 days 12 min ago||depends on the program||
but if the student is unsure, UM is the better route, imo. the midwest is lucky to have quality big ten schools. and if it's an in-state school, even better.
growing up in Mich, i felt lucky to have UM as an in-state option when my out-of-state friends were paying more than twice as much to attend.
and if one is not lucky enough to get into UM, MSU is a pretty good second option.
|3 days 20 min ago||not jacking shots||
but getting more than 4 rebounds per game at the #4 for 30+ minutes per game is not too much to ask. there is no reason with his athleticism that he didn't pull down 7 boards a game. hustle and desire.
|3 days 31 min ago||donnal||
at least he has a decent stroke; chatman does not. i'm hoping donnal can develop into a serviceable #4 but only if he can prove to consistently knock down the corner 3s.
|3 days 3 hours ago||Self?||
seriously? he couldn't coach himself out of a wet paper sack. he wins because his talent level is way better than his competition. but that is a huge part of college coaching, i guess.
he had enough talent to win a nat'l title at illinois and it was his coaching that held that team back. deepest and best front court in the country, yet he let his back court chuck up shots all over the place on their way to defeat.
there's a reason his successor did more than self with self's players.
|3 days 3 hours ago||except||
that dude was better than what we have there now. yikes. god bless beilein.
|3 days 19 hours ago||ok, let me get this straight||
these team lost 3 early entrants to the nba, a 5th year senior and another senior who decided not to return. then, 3 of his early season starters are out for the game; a 4th early season starter did nothing. yet, this team blows out a middle of the pack big ten team. i couldn't watch the game, but this is truly unbelievable. hail john beilein, best coach in the country!
|4 days 14 hours ago||hmmm||
i guess it was the colonel that said "i shall return" and not the general.
