They got NOTHING out of this, and all of Barry's whining in the media and claims that they'd be Nebraska's big rival went nowhere. It may happen, but I don't want to see the league forcing these things....they need to develop over time - because the foundation of a true rivalry is emotion and a history of competition - if not sheer hatred! You can't just call a team a rival because they are in your conference all of a sudden. They have to earn it.

Then OSU for their first conference home game...HUGE game. and the final three weeks are @ Penn State, @ Michigan, and hosting Iowa! BRUTAL run...but also all Marquee big time games w/ conference title game implications.
So they set this up not to give Nebraska the hardest road possible, they gave them OSU and Wisky + Protected PSU because it means BIG ratings for the first two years of the new era. after that in 2013 and 2014 they'll drop OSU and Wisky for Purdue and Illinois or Indiana and things will come down to earth a bit. But they will most definitely face a huge challenge right away.
And you know what? It's awesome....The Big Ten just got serious and is going to challenge for supremacy in College Football.

i don't see how anyone could overtake Iowa for their natural B10 rival...but we'll clearly be a big game for them every year. Iowa is natural for a rivalry just because of the geography and farms and corn and all that....It's not like everyone has to be "rivals" for the games to be great though...We have ours in OSU, ND, and MSU....do we need a 4th to get excited? hell i'm excited for UConn!!!
what's awesome is our initial cross-division games are Purdue and Illinois. We made out like bandits to start since they gave Nebraska Wisky and OSU to go w/ Penn St....that's brutal. Sparty has OSU and Wisky to go w/ Indiana (how hilarious is that as their big protected rival?!?!?!).
Our schedule sets up perfect to make some runs the next two years.
Iowa will obviously be their biggest B10 rival....but us and Penn St. should make for some great games with them too. I think its cool NE/IA will become the last game for both schools....should be some great battles. And we can count on a very cool home schedule each year with this alignment...this is great for the fans in every way.

Alvarez already released the "tiers" they based it all on:
Tier Awesome: OSU/UofM/Nebraska/Penn St
Tier 2: Iowa/Wisky
Tier 3: Northwestern/Purdue
Tier 4: Minny/MSU/Indy/Illinois
So you take or two from each and then sort via rivalries...pretty simple. I like it, and can't believe they didn't screw it up!
