I'd be pretty stunned if they take Torkelson first overall. There's never been a college first baseman taken 1-1, and right-handed hitting, right-handed throwing first baseman are incredibly risky prospects.
There's no obvious #1 right now, though you mentioned Emerson Hancock, who certainly looks the part as a big, hard-thrower from the SEC. Vandy infielder Austin Martin, who you may remember from the College World Series, has a good shot to go 1-1, particularly if it looks like he's a legit shortstop next year. There are a couple of other shortstops who could make their way to the top with good seasons, like Casey Martin from Arkansas and Freddy Zamora from Miami. Torkelson's teammate Alika Williams played well for Team USA, and LA Lafayette infielder Hayden Cantrelle has had a great Cape Cod League, but they seem more like second-half of the first round types.
The strength of this draft really appears the be the SEC arms at the top, so that's probably the smart bet at this point.

But I really think it would be to the benefit of everyone's mental health if we look at this objectively. I don't think anyone can seriously argue that, from a pure prestige standpoint, being the head coach of Michigan would be a better job than being the GM and Coach of the Bears.
Michigan is great. We all love the school and the team and the helmets and the fight song, but it's still just a college team, in a lovely, but small college town. The Bears would give him the chance to win football's ultimate prize, as the head of one of the most storied franchises in professional sports, in one of the best cities in the entire world.
We can make the argument that the Bears are a mess right now, and he'd be walking into a reclamation project. But the NFL is the league of parity, and teams are always turning things around in one year. Hell, the Lions are doing it this year, and Harbaugh has already done it once with the 49ers. Perhaps the lunatic fringe of the UM fan base can see them reaching the CFP next year, but I think realistically we're looking at 2017 at the earliest.
Which brings us to the final argument: Things are different, because Harbaugh loves Michigan. This may be true, and as fans we can all relate to that. But then the question becomes, if Harbaugh loves Michigan, then why isn't he here now? His season with the 49ers is effectively over. They can't make the playoffs, and no one would blame him if he left a dysfunctional situation before coaching two final, meaningless games. The Michigan job would be his right now, if he truly wanted it. Maybe it is a sort of pride, and he doesn't want to give up on his team. But to me, the only natural conclusion is that he's waiting to see all his options. And if that's the case...if his love for Michigan isn't automatically going to override any other job offer, and it doesn't happen this week, then I have to believe it's not happening (.gif)
Both graduated from UVA, but my dad moved up to Ann Arbor to do post-grad work at UM. We were in the middle of the UVA section though, and the guys in front of us literally started crying after that play. Tears of unfathomable sadness.

I've been throwing this idea everywhere I can. I hate the way teams can intentionally foul themselves back into a game (It's especially bad in the NBA, with the hack-a-shaq stuff).
My solution is to let teams decide if they want their player to shoot free throws, or if they'd prefer to take the ball out of bounds, sort of like declining a penalty in football. The current argument is essentially "make your free throws and it isn't an issue," but that doesn't work for me, because the best shooters in the world miss 10% of the time.
If this rule was in place, UM probably loses to Kansas...but they also probably beat Indiana and Wisconsin. And I don't think it will completely kill miracle comebacks, because coaches can still elect free throws if they want, and inbounds plays can be tricky.
...gives me a slight impression that he might stick with Illinois. He likes the academics at Illinois, and apparently they've told him he can play early, which probably wouldn't be the case here. I'd like to see the kid land here though...he's tall and has legit speed (claims a 48.8 400).

- Ypsi is more of a blue-collar town. It's far more diverse than Dexter and Brighton, thanks in part to EMU, but there is more crime, and as I mentioned, the schools aren't terrific. The cost of living is fairly low, and housing is very inexpensive for the most part. I can't tell you much about the city taxes, I'm afraid.
- Brighton has been one of the fastest-growing areas in the state, and as such there is a fair amount of "new" money there. The cost of housing is going to be higher, and possibly much higher than in Ypsi, but in general you'll end up with more property. The schools are pretty good, though probably not at the level of Ann Arbor. And depending on what you'll be doing at your job, Brighton could be an ideal location, as it is right as the crossroads of US-23 and I-96...it's 45 minutes or less to Lansing, Flint, Detroit, and Ann Arbor.
