Zach Lowe on Trey Burke's redemption season

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

Zach Lowe's annual "Luke Walton All-Stars" column highlights role players thriving in unexpected ways. One of the starsof the column is Trey Burke.

"The results have been beyond anything any reasonable person could have dreamed. Burke in New York has the statistical profile of a star. He's shooting well from everywhere: 39 percent from deep, Nowitzkian levels from midrange on colossal volume, and even 73 percent at the rim -- once a no-fly zone for an undersized guy with average athleticism."

Also, if you're a Pistons fan, stay tuned for depressing news about why they let Spencer Dinwiddie go.

had his chances in Detroit. And then he was cut from Chicago too. By the time he was playing decent on a shit team, he was long done with his rookie deal.

Plus Reggie Jackson is light years better than Dinwiddie. He would have never gotten the minutes required to develop in Detroit.

But any time I see a player whose main issue is that they seem too smart or are asking why things should be a certain way, I have a problem. Kind of how I feel about the Josh Rosen-bashing (at least on that subject).

Love seeing Burke getting some redemption! Any chance McGary can next year or is it too late for him?

A high percentage of Burke's shots are step back jumpers at the free throw line and he's canning them. It's weird because of how much he shoots that shot and how good he is getting at canning that shot, it's opening up both driving to the rim and open 3s

Burke's renaissance has me tuning into NYK games.  If M Hoops' surprising wild success is the cake of this basketball season then Trey 2.0 is the icing.

Lord knows the 'Stons have been a disappointment.

I wasn't aware he apparently had a reputation for off-court issues. Glad he was able to clean that up and put himself in a good position. A lot of dudes can't or won't fix that type of issue. Here's hoping we get to keep watching Trey for the next 10 years.

great to hear that Trey has been able to reset and get his career back on track... was never a question of talent - just getting other distractions out of the way...

hopeful guys like Stauskas and GR3  are able to turn that corner as well
