Your unpopular sports opinions?
I think the NHL should bring back ties instead of gimmicky shootouts. I also think the NBA should institute a 4 point line that was talked about not that long ago. Would shake up the game of basketball like it was when the 3 was instituted.
No politics or religion, please. This is a thread on your unpopular sports opinions.

I think we should crowd-fund a new song that can unite the UM fan base....something to replace The Victors.
EDIT: I mean, work alongside The Victors. I don't want to actually replace it.
February 13th, 2015 at 2:58 PM ^
It'd have to be extremely unique.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:09 PM ^
Well, I figure we could get popular Michigan artists involved, like EMINEM, so it would totally be unique.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:22 PM ^
If Iggy Pop, who actually attended the university, were to be involved... I'd think we should hear that one out.

No, you're missing the point. It's not creating a song, but a movement. Synergy. Dynamism. Actuality. Extemporaneity. Convergence. Win.
And the great thing is that it's a purely organic movement, which is why we're asking for several thousand dollars to bribe a pop star to write the song for us. Grassroots.
February 13th, 2015 at 5:52 PM ^
Wow, that sounds like an amazing project that would revolutionize what it means to have music, sports, and entertainment!!! Like, totally something that’s never been done in music, college or sports ever!!! All we need is some celebrities, some Grammy-award winners obviously, and then we'll have our own song that we created, that we were a part of!!!
I'll throw in the idea that we should make a music video! And a documentary that's all about us making it all -- "Making the Movement"!!!
We can have sponsorships, school endorsements, and crowdfunding too!!! But, you know, it should also involve a significant philanthropic contribution.
This movement will energize Michigan fans globally!!!

I think Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter of all-time, regardless of steriod use.

Brian Williams is the greatest hitter of all times. At least according to his memoirs.

only to Pete Rose. His numbers are hard to argue with.
Hmmm, I'm sensing a small trend.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:09 PM ^
It is a farce that Pete Rose is STILL not in the Hall of Fame.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:11 PM ^
Considering the reasons that other players are kept out of the hall, plus the recent rash of "forgiveness" and the reasons for such lately, I hope his convo with the new commish goes well.
Not to mention, his Super Bowl commercial was hysterical.

at shooting himself in the foot than at building goodwill. He's still a sure bet to get in sometime, unlike Bonds.

and honestly, I've only started thinking about this lately after the whole PSU thing. If they can be "forgiven" certainly Pete Rose deserves consideration?
EDIT: To address your point though, I'm actually a bit surprised how my feelings on this have changed over time. I used to not care one bit what happened to Pete Rose, but I find myself considering his plight a lot since the commercial and other things that have happened in the sports world lately.

situation as a legal matter that should have been handled strictly in the courts. The players didn't benefit from the horrific acts of the coach and the team didn't illegally gain a competitive advantage. I think more heads should have rolled in a more severe fashion in the legal system, but I also don't think it was the NCAAs place to deal with it. I know I'm in a small minority that feels this way.
Gambling just can't be permitted in sports. As I've said elsewhere, if you can't trust that what on the field is real there's really no point.
February 13th, 2015 at 5:14 PM ^
He deserves to get in before Pete.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:44 PM ^
MLB doesn't want him in the hall but they have no trouble trotting him out to promote their "All _____ Team" every few years. I could see banning him for ever for altering games but from what I understand there is zero evidence of that. People already have forgiven Ryan Braun who in my veiw is the biggest piece of shit playing because of how he smeared the sample collector claiming he was anti-semitic. He's far worse than Bonds, Clemons and McGuire but his misdeeds are almost forgotten now.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:14 PM ^
He's a complete DB and a shameful boil on baseball's already badly pocked ass. But he's never been accused of not trying to win.
Rose, on the other hand, managed his lineup, including his bullpen for game after game. Who knows whether he would work a pitcher a little harder if he had a large bet on a game? Rose brought gamblers into the game and this shame upon himself and for that he deserves to be out of the HOF. .
February 13th, 2015 at 4:17 PM ^
but Rose is up for the Hall as a player, not a manager. I think you're comparing apples and oranges. Or bananas. Or pears.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:07 PM ^
Only gambling calls into question whether what we're seeing on the field is real. If everyone isn't trying to win then MLB (or any other sport) is just pro wrestling. Rose bet significantly and bet on the Reds. He should be out forever.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:50 PM ^
Pete Rose is a hall of fame player. I don't care about his managerial career where the betting took place as it is completely separate from his achievements as a player.
February 13th, 2015 at 4:29 PM ^
February 13th, 2015 at 3:19 PM ^
Unfortunately, I think the sentiment regarding Rose is so ingrained that he may never get in. I do think Bonds eventually gets in, but probably not until he is elgible for the veterans committee.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:22 PM ^
but the problem with letting Bonds in is that it sets a precedence for a lot of other players and starts MLB down a path I think they want to stay away from. Just my opinion, though.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:29 PM ^
True, and I think they will be a lot more selective with regards to players from the era than they otherwise would have been. But that doesn't mean players with steriod allegations will be completely excluded, IMO, especially as more time passes.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:36 PM ^
but I think the sports writers are pretty raw about it these days. Time will tell though. I don't know enough about what they're thinking to make a call one way or the other.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:35 PM ^
popular opinion, but I think Pete Rose should be in the HoF. If players can get in during steroid eras, then Pete Rose should be able to get in.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:53 PM ^
but his skills were undeniable. I do like that his poor fielding and lack of power keep the prick out of GOAT conversations.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:10 PM ^
but... I think Ty Cobb may be the greatest ballplayer even if he was a psyco racist prick (although most academic work on the subject seems to absolve him of at least some of his worst storied behavior).
February 13th, 2015 at 3:18 PM ^
Ty Cobb gets kind of a raw deal. Lots of people were racist back then. Hell, lots of people are racist now.
February 13th, 2015 at 3:35 PM ^

I hate the shootouts in soccer even more than hockey. At the end of regulation they should eliminate the substitution rule, give the coaches carte blanche to use anyone on their bench, and play to the death. Why do you have 8 guys on the bench if you can't use them?

Ted Williams!?
February 13th, 2015 at 5:07 PM ^
He just might have been the best of all time, which is what really pisses me off about the 'roids (and he sooooo used them. How do a grown man's hat and shoe sizes get bigger?). Leads to a lot of "Yes, but..." Yes, but would he have surpassed Hank with them? Yes, but would he have had more injuries slowing him down without them? Yes, he had a phenomenal sense of the strike zone, but was it magnified by pitchers fearing his 'roid aided power? So I just can't bring myself to consider him in the conversation of best ever.
