Your Non M Friends Reactions

Submitted by mgoharter on

I am very interested in hearing the reactions MgoUsers are getting from their non-Michigan friends/family in regards to Harbaughrama.

I live in the Tampa Bay area (work in St. Pete, live an hour south) and have been getting absolutely roasted for my belief that IT'S HAPPENING.  The UF,FSU,UCF (lol) grads down here tell me there is zero chance we get Harbaugh/Stoops/Miles or anyone top tier because we have been "irrelevent" for many years.

I'm coming to you as a long time scroller and first time threat creator, so if this is a dumb topic, berate me for at least 30 minutes and then delete.

I live in Ohio and have had to deal with OSU fans for a long time.  Many are my friends and neighbors.  The good ones, and there are many, are just waking up to the possibility that Harbaugh will come and to be honest they are excited about it.   Most tell me that they want Michigan to be better to impove the rivarly.

They're full of it. Would they really want to replay the last game of the season against a really good Michigan team with a 50/50 chance we go to the playoffs instead of them?

They're in and doing fine while we're lousy.

They are so used to winning, they can't contemplate it not continuing. I know the feeling intimately.
I do not want to jinx anything, but thoughts of an undefeated #1 OSU coming up to the Big House to face a Harbaugh-lead Michigan next year are almost too awesome to conceive of...parallels with Bo and all that...a repeat performance would be so magnificent it might just erase the pain of the past 8 years entirely.

I live in Wiscy and wear my colors. They have been keeping their mouth shut because they know what would happen if Harbaugh came back. It would awaken a sleeping giant.

All jokes aside I think this is a fine topic and a relief from the endless chatsports threads we had earlier. Alas, I can't comment much since I live a stone's throw from the heart of it all and have seldom been in touch with people over the last month who aren't Michigan fans but still care about sports to be plugged in on the situation.

MSU and OSU fans think we will break the bank and ultimately be disappointed with Harbaugh.

My 49ers friend has gone from "no way" to "shit, we are losing him to Michigan" in the past week.

are Sparty fans or NFL fans.  The theme among them is common, Michigan has sucked for a long time and needs a great coach to turn it around, but think Harbaugh will stay in the NFL.

FWIW Michigan fans seem to think he's coming or it's 50/50; NFL fans or those within the ranks say 50/50 at best but probably staying in NFL.

Translation: None of us know squat. Jim Harbaugh has to decide with his family what is most important and best choice for him and those closest to him.  A Lombardi Trophy may be the biggest draw, but it seems, based on Harbaugh's comments and actions over the years that his heart wants to be the savior of the program as Bo was and put Michigan back at the top of college football.

I think winning the Super Bowl would  be easier for him to do in the right place, than winning a NC in college football, given the inequity of how the game is governed across the country.

why would I be friends with people that are different from me?  I'm friends with a few MSU fans and they almost seem to acknowledge how dangerous it would be if Harbaugh does come to UofM.  Can sense that it would make them nervous.

We have been irrelevant for thepast 7 years, but we still get much more press coverage than most teams in the nation.  This IS and ALWAYS will be MICHIGAN.

Yeah, I think, on a national scale, people are being reminded just how deep M's pockets run. M may have been irrevelant in football for several years, but they still have that bazooka-type cache few others do. Much like the B1G as a conference in general. Soon.

I love your Gator friends laughing about being irrelevant. Now THAT is funny. And the same for your Seminole friends, when their program was mediocre at best for a decade until Jameis came to town and got his Buckeye like wrist slaps despite rape charges, breaking and entering and other character issues. CFU fans, I'm not even bothering.

In answer to your original question, I live about 20 miles from Ann Arbor so any Harbaugh talk I do with fellow M fans. But almost all of them still have doubts that it's going to happen. I think they have the same mentality as me in that it would be too awesome so naturally it won't happen, we can't have nice things, yadda, yadda, yadda.

With the rest of the world continuing to say it wont happen, my desire to see them eat crow rises.

Well my friend Chandler doesn't care. Joey is thinks he staying in the NFL. Ross doesn't like sports. Monica Rachel and Phoebe don't think his wife would leave the Bay Area.
But my old friends Kramer and Bob Sacamano thinking he's coming.

I don't understand the disbelief by non-Wolverines that Harbaugh would even consider becoming the head coach at Michigan.

Consider:

  • He grew up in Ann Arbor. He lived there from the time he was 9 years old, until he was 16 years old, when his family moved to California. During that time, his dad was a coach at the University of Michigan. He and his brother spent much of their time around the Michigan football team, at the practice facilities, at Michigan Stadium, etc. I imagine he attended every Michigan home game, and probably was on the sidelines of many (or most) of them. He attended high school kiddy-corner to Michigan Stadium.
  • He returned to Ann Arbor when he was 18 to attend the University as a football player. He became the starting quarterback his sophomore year. During his senior year, he lead the team to an 11-2 record and Rose Bowl appearance, after famously predicting a victory over their rivals Ohio State. He was a runner up in the Heisman voting.
  • He idolized Bo Schembechler.
  • He made many friends from Ann Arbor, from his childhood and college playing days.
  • He has a great affinity for Michigan and it must pain him to see their recent woes.
  • Michigan has one of the most legendary football programs.

What I am getting at, his past experiences are very unique. It is fairly rare for a star college football player to play at a university located in the town he grew up in, let alone at a university with the prestige and history of Michigzn. And, then, that star college football player goes on to be a star coach. Is there anything comparable? I can't think of any.

Well these people think the NFL is the be all, end all of American Football. For players yes, but not so much for coaches....at least in the last 15-20. To me, the great coaches are either retired or passed on. There are good coaches, but not GREAT. Not to say there can't be great ones out of the good ones. The front office BS has really done a number on a coach's ability IMHO.
