Wouldn't Be Ohio State Week Without Some Woody

A few memorable clips of Wayne Woodrow Hayes. One will make you despise his cockiness. One will make you laugh. The last one will make you appreciate that Bo didn't hang around too long and keep coaching past his time.

Eh.  Too reasonable and charming.  I prefer to remember him punching out camermen, Clemson linebackers, and telling his guys to tear down the Banner.  A lot more fun to hate that guy than respect this one.

Correct.  The ultimate mic drop before mic drops were even a thing.

The story being that after an away game at Michigan, he made the OSU team push the bus over the state line after it ran out of gas because he refused to spend money in the state of Michigan.

Sorry, but the banner, the bomb dogs... these stories stoke the fire and are wonderful.  It's always fun to have a villain.  I hope Harbaugh is able to get jabs like these in.  They are right in his wheelhouse of things that he would do.

I was at a party and stoned out my mind when it happened.  I was the only guy watching the game and when it occured I couldnt believe it and literally questioned "did I just see what I think I saw?"  They didnt replay it and the volume was down on the set so I couldn't hear if the announcers said anything.

It wasnt until the next morning when I heard he got fired for it that I finally accepted what I saw was real.  Up to then I just figured i was just too high to process that Woody actually punched an opposing player during a game.

As much as I hate Ohio State and all it represents, I find myself quite unable to hate Woody Hayes. I've always found his graduation speech to be inspiring. And like Bo, he wasn't in it for the money. All except the weird outbursts and punching. I remember reading in a Bo book that he thought it was untreated diabetes that caused him to act like that.

From wiki:

He commanded PC 1251 in the Palau Islands invasion and the destroyer-escort USS Rinehart in both the Atlantic and Pacific operations.

He remained a professor of Military History after the firing incident.

As much as it's fun to rag on him for the stupid shit he did, I can't find in me to dislike the guy.

at things other than football said it was all part of who he was. He was completely unpretentious, but she said he was probably the smartest member of a very intelligent family. As was the case back then, and I think even today, he would quote great war time generals. One of the quotes in his book was of a comandr preparing his troops for battle. I believe he used it prior to a game. Like Bo, he was a master motivator and because it is so much a part of being an outstanding coach I knew we were doomed with Brady. You can recruit great talent, but damn you have to push them a certain amount each day, in increments, so by Friday nights in my case, or Saturdays in theirs', they almost have to be restrained. Such is their desire to unleash some whup ass. It's an art and that's why so few stand above the crowd.

people.

Woody Hayes was fantastic.

If he wasn't it would have changed my childhood.

His decline in judgment was earth shaking but not outside his character.  Woody was a model in his prime.  I don't feel the same about any other OSU coach.
