Would you hire Urban Meyer to coach Michigan?
Given the latest disclosure on Urban and knowing what you know about him as a person and also his ability to deliver victories and championships, if you were AD at Michigan, would you hire Urban Meyer to be head coach of the football team (assume money is not an issue)?

Of course not - too many character and integrity issues. Winning should not trump integrity. Let institutions willing to win at all costs deal with the inevitable scandals that follow him everywhere.

Come on Pete, I hate Ohio State as much as anyone but look at them right now, they seem to be in good shape.
I hope it all crumbles on them though, they deserve a lot of bad luck for a long time!
February 13th, 2021 at 6:21 PM ^
Well yeah, it doesn’t seem like his fuckery has hurt OSU. That doesn’t make him any less of an asshole
February 13th, 2021 at 4:09 PM ^
Agreed. As much as Harbaugh does run his mouth, I do like his dialectical quote about a conversation which begins by asking "How good was Team #1xx?" which responds with talking about how we can't know how "good" this team was until they've become men, begun families, ascended in their careers, raised children, achieved highly, and given back to their community/contributed beneficially to the human race.
Football is a wonderful ritual which brings people together and demonstrates the beauty of athleticism, the symphony of cooperation, and dynamism of strategy, football is particularly gorgeous in this regard as it combines both the most brutal and beastial aspects (we're not talking "no hand-check" basketball), but also the formation and window-dressing aspects of group coordinated deception, and individual sacrifice for the greater good (only hockey is in the same tier). But it's not the be all end all to life, and 18-22 is not, nor should not be the pinnacle of a man's life (nor decade-ish for the 1% that go to the NFL), there's just so much more to experience, celebrate, and accel at in this wonderful world.
So, like Jim's quote, we can't judge how "good" this Team was, for another 40-50 years, when all the really, truly important cards have been played, and we really see what type of men these players went on to become.

i can’t wait to scan linkedin and facebook in 2037 to find out if that ‘97 team was any good.

Round peg, square hole
February 13th, 2021 at 12:16 PM ^
No that would fit. Square peg in round hole would not.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:31 PM ^
Technically it always depends upon the size of the peg and the size of the hole.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:41 PM ^
If you know what I mean

I’ve found angle of insertion to be a factor.
February 13th, 2021 at 1:10 PM ^
The angle of the dangle is inversely proportional to the heat of the meat.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:48 PM ^
I wish someone had told me that before, when I was James Bond’s Unused Herpes Meds.
February 14th, 2021 at 1:03 AM ^
You must be an LSA grad.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:11 PM ^
I feel like there are enough coaches in the "really good at coaching football/not horrendous human beings" cell.
So, no.
February 13th, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
... but are there really?
February 13th, 2021 at 12:14 PM ^
Why ? His pattern is to stay at a place 5 to 7 years until a scandal hits and then leave. I'll pass.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:47 PM ^
....after winning a couple national championships. I'd be tempted.
February 13th, 2021 at 2:16 PM ^
Of course you would - you don’t care about academics, integrity or anything else beyond wins and losses, so yeah Urbz is an excellent choice for you
February 13th, 2021 at 2:41 PM ^
Let's see....checks US News College rankings....Ohio State (#53) and Florida (#30) sure don't seem to be struggling with their academics or integrity.
February 13th, 2021 at 2:50 PM ^
I think with Michigan's natural advantages of being Michigan, Urban could win here with minimal bending of the rules. I'd hire him in a second.
February 13th, 2021 at 4:17 PM ^
User name checks out!
February 13th, 2021 at 3:38 PM ^
Yeah, and his football teams undoubtedly contributed to those lofty rankings. Cardale Jones, Percy Harvin and Aaron Hernandez were practically Rhodes Scholars, right?
February 13th, 2021 at 6:43 PM ^
I don’t think Michigan football is batting 1.000 on citizenship either. You could also make a case that having a football team that actually wins conference and national championships raises the profile of the school which leads to an increase in applications which allows the university to admit smarter kids and therefore makes it more competitive and a better university overall.
February 14th, 2021 at 7:08 AM ^
Again, Michigan isn’t exactly hurting in the volume or quality of applications. The high academic kids who are applying to major universities probably don’t care all that much if the football team is winning national championships. They’re going to care about the university’s reputation in their particular field of study.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:15 PM ^
Is "just beat Ohio State" really the only thing we care about? If so, maybe. Personally, no.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:16 PM ^
I lack the necessary money to pay Urban Meyer what he's worth to coach Michigan. But I would send the athletic department a killer letter of recommendation.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:21 PM ^
Not at all after the BS he pulled at Florida - and certainly not after his slimy stint at osu. The latest news has no bearing on anything - just more confirmation of who/what he is.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:23 PM ^
NO!! But if winning is all that matters, amid cheating scandals, then it's OK. Never say never but no way does Urbs ever coach at Michigan.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:23 PM ^
This sounds like a topic that Valenti or Fithian would have on their radio show.
February 13th, 2021 at 4:25 PM ^
I don’t know about Fithian but Riger for sure!
February 13th, 2021 at 12:32 PM ^
No. He is amoral.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:35 PM ^
I don't know why people have such a hard time getting this. Even if it were a possibility it wouldn't work out on the field the way it did at UF and OSU. Meyer requires a certain culture to operate at his full capacity. Michigan does not have this culture.
February 13th, 2021 at 6:59 PM ^
Exactly right, and that’s why we would never hire him and also why he would never come to A2.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:35 PM ^
No the fuck no.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
funny because he was almost born to do it. His initials are U F M!
and yet, put winning above everything.
he's one erased cell phone from getting caught doing a lot of illegal stuff.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
???
Retread topic.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:38 PM ^
It's like marrying a beautiful woman who you know is a shrew. You might be able to deal with it at first and enjoy her beauty, but in the long run it will destroy you
February 13th, 2021 at 1:37 PM ^
Correct. Not shrewd for Michigan.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:40 PM ^
Hell no!
But it would be interesting experiment to ask this question after our first loss next season and compare the responses.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:40 PM ^
No. Alums are generally not keen on seeing the reputation of their school/degree tarnished.
February 13th, 2021 at 12:50 PM ^
Do you think OSU alums feel their school/degree's are tarnished? Give me a break.
February 13th, 2021 at 2:27 PM ^
I don't need to think about it since I hear about it from folks down there.
February 13th, 2021 at 3:17 PM ^
In all seriousness, I'm interested in what you heard.
February 13th, 2021 at 6:24 PM ^
I live in southern Ohio. Almost all my colleagues, friends and family are OSU fans/grads. Not one has said anything like that. Urban is still on tv commercials promoting products. He's bascially royalty.
February 13th, 2021 at 6:39 PM ^
Nobody gives a shit what those cooler-poopers think. OSU degrees aren’t worth anything close to a UM degree and part of the reason is that we care about ‘playing school’ and all they care about is winning football games. They probably weren’t embarrassed when the school president joked about getting fired by the football coach, when that would’ve caused righteous outrage here. Go cheer for Alabama or Clemson if you’re too stupid to understand the difference
