Would Urban Meyer in NFL impact semi-pro Ohio team?
A lot of chatter about NFL teams interested in throwing money at Urban. Would his stint (hopeful flop) in NFL have any impact on Ohio football aka semi pro team #3 of 4?
I.e. would there be any impact, some impact or none? I'm thinking if he did try NFL he's going to look for assistants from his tree / college football days plus analysts and most of these are housed in and around the Ohio program.

Would love urban in the nfl. Please let it happen!
December 27th, 2020 at 5:49 PM ^
Yeah. The second coming of Chip Kelly.
December 27th, 2020 at 5:51 PM ^
Nick Saban thinks it’s a great idea!

Your attempt at humor, woof.

I don't give a damn about the whole state of o-hi-o!

It's mostly flat wasteland between Pittsburgh and Ann Arbor.

I don't give a damn, next stop is Vietnam.
December 27th, 2020 at 3:27 PM ^
Another thread based on chatter?
Anyway, If it did somehow happen, I would guess he would surround himself with staff that knows the NFL and there would be a low pilfer rate in Cbus.

Adam Schefter reporting that NFL teams are interested in Meyer which is more credible than most internet chatter. What is more interesting to me is Schefter has yet to report any NFL interest in Harbaugh (that I have seen at least).
Per Schefter...
Meyer, according to a source connected to one of those teams, did not dismiss the overtures and is considering whether to make the jump to the NFL. He intends to decide in the next week, before the NFL regular season is over, and teams expect to hear his decision in the coming days.
Sources who have spoken to Meyer believe he wants to make sure that, if he decides to make the jump to the NFL, he is prepared to fully immerse himself in a new world.
December 27th, 2020 at 4:28 PM ^
The teams are Jacksonville, because Lawrence, and Detroit, because Spielman.
December 27th, 2020 at 4:30 PM ^
Meyer in Detroit would be hilarious.
December 27th, 2020 at 4:35 PM ^
It would be typical.
December 27th, 2020 at 8:39 PM ^
Either Meyer fails and embarrasses himself, like most coaches in Detroit do, or he succeeds, and he's the best coach the Lions have had since the fifties.
I don't see the downside.
(I realize there are different definitions of success possible here, but for the Lions I would regard success as being a perennial playoff team who occasionally advance to the next round.)
December 27th, 2020 at 9:36 PM ^
Meyer has never failed as a head coach. He has had success at every stop.
The NFL is different but Meyer is a leader and a strategist. I would expect he would do great things for the Lions.
If you are a Lions fan you should be hoping for this.
December 27th, 2020 at 10:25 PM ^
I'm not as convinced of that, actually. He's succeeded everywhere at the college level, but plenty of other successful college coaches like Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban have not succeeded in the NFL. The coaching skills that bring success at the collegiate level do not line up exactly with the skills needed to be successful in the pros.
We may see, though. Pete Carroll has done a great job with the Seahawks.
December 27th, 2020 at 5:56 PM ^
Yeah, it's more credible than nothing but I'd sort of be surprised if Meyer took the leap. Also, I don't think there's a ton of interest in Harbaugh but I also assume he's not put much effort out there yet
December 27th, 2020 at 3:32 PM ^
Come on man, this OP needs to be in the obituary section threads, oh wait....
December 27th, 2020 at 3:36 PM ^
Are the Muschamp rumors getting any real traction?
December 27th, 2020 at 6:04 PM ^
Per my friend at the AD, contact has been made with a couple DC's we've discussed here (Muschamp and Freeman), he has no knowledge of mutual interest or offers on the table.

What about Mason?
December 27th, 2020 at 9:17 PM ^
He didn’t mention Mason. Doesn’t mean it’s not a possibility
December 27th, 2020 at 3:42 PM ^
Think it would be better if Day was getting the NFL buzz if you’re talking about making a dent in OSU.
December 27th, 2020 at 3:45 PM ^
I doubt Meyer leaves the friendly confines of Shitbus for the foreseeable future, especially if the teams calling are Jax and Det.
December 27th, 2020 at 4:36 PM ^
Jax would make sense after coaching Florida all those years. He would be welcomed like a hero there and probably given a very long leash
December 27th, 2020 at 3:53 PM ^
I highly doubt urban M. has the courage to go to a league where he cannot guarantee himself the best roster. He is too soft of a competitor to risk an even playing field.
December 27th, 2020 at 3:54 PM ^
yes, all the trailer park hustlers will add NFL network to their packages and skip out on their lot rent to pay for the addition.

December 27th, 2020 at 4:37 PM ^
Anything where Urban is too occupied to be a shadow coach for OSU is a good thing.
December 27th, 2020 at 4:49 PM ^
Semi-pro? Stfu
December 27th, 2020 at 4:59 PM ^
I don’t care if he goes to the NFL one way or the other as long as he doesn’t coach a team I like. Then I wouldn’t be able to root for them anymore.
December 27th, 2020 at 5:03 PM ^
Would his stint (hopeful flop) in NFL have any impact on Ohio football aka semi pro team #3 of 4?
Yes, he still works in the athletics department and as Day's mentor his office is right there available to answer any questions. I also believe Day is basically following Urban's blueprint for running the organization, but with his choice of staff. I think Urban leaving would have a lasting impact on OSU football, particularly as time goes by, and even more so if Day doesn't stick around forever.
December 27th, 2020 at 6:37 PM ^
NFL cuts and shuffles around unsuccessful coaches every season. Yet the midas touch coach goes untouched for a 10 extremely successful seasons. Someone someday is going to have to explain this to me. If people think Chip Kelly is equal to Meyer you are crazy. The guy can flat out coach but ill be damned if the NFL would throw the money cannon at him?? Also he went away from the low skilled passers as well. Whats left. Man if our rivals arent grossly under valued (peak Dantonio and Meyer) and our coaches terribly overrated (you know who). Yes of course he will be trash in the NFL, the main reason its said on our board is because we dont like him. What about the rest of the world and especially NFL front offices. What is their thinking?
December 27th, 2020 at 7:22 PM ^
Look at the bright side, if Urbz takes the Lions job Harbaugh could negotiate a Michigan/Lions scrimmage, and with that have an objectively better chance of beating the Lions than they do OSU.
December 27th, 2020 at 7:50 PM ^
This is hilarious - good one Texas! LOL

December 27th, 2020 at 7:26 PM ^
Your title is dumb. But anyway, yes, anything that gets Urban out of OSU will hurt them, and that's a good thing. He's essentially mentoring Day and still has a strong presence around the football team. Lessening that would be a positive.
December 27th, 2020 at 9:23 PM ^
Meyer would not succeed in the nfl and he knows that. His 2 biggest assets is having far more talent then anyone else, which in a level playing field won't happen, and that style offense he runs will not work in the nfl.
December 27th, 2020 at 11:02 PM ^
I’d like to see him in the NFL.
December 28th, 2020 at 12:01 AM ^
To be successful in the NFL you need one thing. A quarterback.
Jacksonville has a decent nucleus of young talent and soon they will have Trevor Lawrence. That and a fat six year contract will offer the best opportunity for success.
December 28th, 2020 at 3:43 AM ^
I want this only to see him take L’s.
I’m sure he is giving Saban a ring for advice. I don’t see it happening, and I’m not saying this to say he cheated at all....but NFL is too level of a playing field and he won’t have any distinct advantages.
Lions excluded
December 28th, 2020 at 10:52 AM ^
He’d stop shadow coaching and recruiting at OSU so make it so
