Would Urban Meyer in NFL impact semi-pro Ohio team?

Submitted by uofmfan_13 on December 27th, 2020 at 3:13 PM

A lot of chatter about NFL teams interested in throwing money at Urban. Would his stint (hopeful flop) in NFL have any impact on Ohio football aka semi pro team #3 of 4?

I.e. would there be any impact, some impact or none? I'm thinking if he did try NFL he's going to look for assistants from his tree / college football days plus analysts and most of these are housed in and around the Ohio program.

Another thread based on chatter?

Anyway, If it did somehow happen, I would guess he would surround himself with staff that knows the NFL and there would be a low pilfer rate in Cbus.

Adam Schefter reporting that NFL teams are interested in Meyer which is more credible than most internet chatter. What is more interesting to me is Schefter has yet to report any NFL interest in Harbaugh (that I have seen at least).

Per Schefter...

Meyer, according to a source connected to one of those teams, did not dismiss the overtures and is considering whether to make the jump to the NFL. He intends to decide in the next week, before the NFL regular season is over, and teams expect to hear his decision in the coming days.

Sources who have spoken to Meyer believe he wants to make sure that, if he decides to make the jump to the NFL, he is prepared to fully immerse himself in a new world.

Either Meyer fails and embarrasses himself, like most coaches in Detroit do, or he succeeds, and he's the best coach the Lions have had since the fifties.

I don't see the downside.

(I realize there are different definitions of success possible here, but for the Lions I would regard success as being a perennial playoff team who occasionally advance to the next round.)

I'm not as convinced of that, actually. He's succeeded everywhere at the college level, but plenty of other successful college coaches like Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban have not succeeded in the NFL. The coaching skills that bring success at the collegiate level do not line up exactly with the skills needed to be successful in the pros.

We may see, though. Pete Carroll has done a great job with the Seahawks.

I don’t care if he goes to the NFL one way or the other as long as he doesn’t coach a team I like. Then I wouldn’t be able to root for them anymore.

Yes, he still works in the athletics department and as Day's mentor his office is right there available to answer any questions.  I also believe Day is basically following Urban's blueprint for running the organization, but with his choice of staff.  I think Urban leaving would have a lasting impact on OSU football, particularly as time goes by, and even more so if Day doesn't stick around forever.

NFL cuts and shuffles around unsuccessful coaches every season. Yet the midas touch coach goes untouched for a 10 extremely successful seasons. Someone someday is going to have to explain this to me. If people think Chip Kelly is equal to Meyer you are crazy. The guy can flat out coach but ill be damned if the NFL would throw the money cannon at him?? Also he went away from the low skilled passers as well. Whats left. Man if our rivals arent grossly under valued (peak Dantonio and Meyer) and our coaches terribly overrated (you know who). Yes of course he will be trash in the NFL, the main reason its said on our board is because we dont like him. What about the rest of the world and especially NFL front offices. What is their thinking?

Look at the bright side, if Urbz takes the Lions job Harbaugh could negotiate a Michigan/Lions scrimmage,  and with that have an objectively better chance of beating the Lions than they do OSU.

Your title is dumb. But anyway, yes, anything that gets Urban out of OSU will hurt them, and that's a good thing. He's essentially mentoring Day and still has a strong presence around the football team. Lessening that would be a positive.

Meyer would not succeed in the nfl and he knows that. His 2 biggest assets is having far more talent then anyone else, which in a level playing field won't happen,  and that style offense he runs will not work in the nfl.

To be successful in the NFL you need one thing.  A quarterback.

Jacksonville has a decent nucleus of young talent and soon they will have Trevor Lawrence.  That and a fat six year contract will offer the best opportunity for success.

I want this only to see him take L’s.

I’m sure he is giving Saban a ring for advice.  I don’t see it happening, and I’m not saying this to say he cheated at all....but NFL is too level of a playing field and he won’t have any distinct advantages.
