Wolverines Are 5th Most Popular Bet at Vegas Superbook to Win the National Championship

Submitted by VicTorious1 on

Interesting.  It might be because UM has such bad odds (and Harbaugh of course). Alternatively, we might just have a huge delusional alumni base.  The Wolverines have also received the 5th most overall bets placed at Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook.

Our fanbase is without a doubt the most delusional. The arrogance is so obnoxious to see comments about say Notre Dame fans being more delusional because they are betting on their team even though they played for a national championship a couple of years ago and we haven't been even relevant in a decade. Or some stupid comment about A&M being stupid for leaving the garbage Big12 for the best conference in the country? What the hell happened to this board?

I'd rather we be delusional than have a bunch of our fans ready to head for the hills. It's about time people had some damn confidence in our team. Yeah, we probably will go somewhere from 7-5 to 9-3 but we finally have some excitement around the program again. That's all I can ask for after last year. If these people want to bet their money saying we're going to win a national championship, more power to them.

To be fair Michigan was certainly relevant in 2006, so less than a decade. But point taken. And Notre Dame has had regular seasons of 8-4 and 7-5 since the national title game and they were extremely lucky to get there in 2012. I think it's fair to say both groups betting on a national title are delusional.

It's gambling. I'm guessing that the vast majority of people placing bets are not fans of UM in the classic sense. They just see good odds for a big payoff, know Harbaugh is there, and take a chance. Hell, the article states a bunch of money was put on Georgia Southern against WVU because the spread. It's not like GSU has a bunch of fans out there. Saying these are fans is silly.

Dude, breathe.

You've made two posts complaining than same thing, but no one ever said that Notre Dame fans were more delusional than UM fans.

The post you replied implied only that Notre Dame fans that think they will win a national championship were also delusional, not that they were any more or less delusional than UM fans.

You've managed to get your panties all riled up about something that literally nobody ever even said.

Take a deep breath and count to 5.  Doesn't that feel better now?

Michigan. Don't know why anymore! We are so exited about a coach who can't play. Our rival has a better recruiting class and just won a NC. Start being realistic please. Am I the only one who feels light years away when we get so exited about a 3 star recruit

I'd hope to always be part of a fan base that is excited about players signing with their team and about having a new head coach who is one of the best on the game. If being a fan of things your team does is viewed as a negative by you, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Jesus, the trolls popping up trying to squelch preseason football excitement has become such a cliche'.  Honestly, haven't you people anything better to do with your time than to impersonate disgruntled home fans?

If you had been paying attention you'd have noticed that Harbaugh knows talent far better than both you and the recruiting rating services. I guess you missed the whole Stanford and 49ers eras.

MICHIGAN is a very heavily wagered upon team/program, period.  It's because of the Alumni base and general popularity of the program and its history.  There are other teams that are in the same boat, noter dame being one of them and another Vegas favorite ....the Oakland Raiders.

My personal favorite bet in Vegas when it comes to CFB is the pre-season odds to win (the BCS) the National Title where you would have ohio state at 2:1 ...Bama, LSU, etc. etc. and basically the Top 75 programs in the nation listed.  Even a team like Colorado might be up there at 100:1 or something and then the final option ... "The Rest of the Field"

That might be the biggest sucker bet of all-time.

It is virtually impossible for the CFB National Champ to come from outside the pre-season Top 25 or so programs, much less outside of the Top 75-80 programs in general.

I agree we're one of those programs, but I'd say this year's media circus and Harbaugh's celebrity level is driving even more action. People are betting just on a Harbaughing to occur. Football-logic wise it's not a smart bet, but it shows you what people think of Harbaugh whether it's rational or not.

" I ddn't come back to Ann Arbor to win 8 games!"

Too many false conflations with JH early results at Stanford. He is a MUCH better/more experienced coach then he was then... and we have great (if undeveloped) talent on our roster.

We have had 7 tough years, but it's time to be 'Michigan' again. Scrap those weak 7-8 win predictions and embrace this season as more than just a transition. We will win with EUTM!

I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and Michigan was 30 to 1 odds on the strip but 80 to 1 odds at the Golden Nugget downtown. This 100 to 1 odds must just be on an offshore betting account ?

during my earlier adult years I indulged in sports gambling. Generally teams with huge fan bases (in the NFL most notably the Cowboys) are generally better to bet against. Vegas will set the line, then adjust if need be, to try to get an equal amount of action on both sides, so that they can hedge and take their juice regardless. If Dallas was playing Arizona, the line would always be skewed more towards Dallas based on the greater volume of Dallas bets. If Dallas was favored by 7.5, maybe the more realistic number was 6. Remember, Michigan has a huge fan base, and will most of the time attract more action based on that. My guess is that those National Championship odds for UM are much too low based on UM getting that crazy volume of bets.

^^ THIS ^^

My buddy worked at a Book in Vegas for a number of years and this is exactly it and what I had posted before ...  there are certain teams/programs and fanbases that Vegas loves because they know the action is going to be deep.

Somebody else posted an example of a Ga Southern vs WVU game that drew $$ because of the Odds ...  That will draw some bets because of the payoff but it also was Odds set to attract bets and the money on that game would never be close to the amount of money bet on Texas/Oklahoma or Michigan/noter dame

TOOOT TOOOOOOOT!!!!

Nothing wrong with more exposure! Keep it coming guys!

Did anyone else read the bet as "fifth most popular" bet and not "fifth most likely to win it"?

The comments on the ESPN article are pretty funny. People seemed to have read it as "This is an article for Ohio State doing well but we'll talk about Michigan instead.".... Also MSU fans.

People zoomed past the part where it said that we were underdogs in the Utah game and the "The Rivalry" game.

Still fun to read though. I'm glad people are betting on us!
