Wolverines and climate change
Sorry if the title seems clickbaity. This is not a public opinion poll of UMich alums in Brooklyn and Colorado Springs. It's a NYT piece on actual wolverines in Alaska:

The end of the first sentence says it all..
”..it isn’t easy being a Wolverine.”
February 12th, 2021 at 7:59 AM ^
Like most things in life....what is “Great” is never “Easy”. Go Blue!!!
February 12th, 2021 at 8:09 AM ^
No, see, the song is about Michigan wolverines.
it doesn’t form any opinion about Alaskan ones.

"..it isn’t easy being a Wolverine.”
"It ain't easy, being a Cooler Pooper.
So much pressure, to beat 'That Team',
I got children, born of my sister."

When they asked the wolverine about climate change and how it's affecting his everyday life, I couldn't believe all he said was, "It doesn't matter, just beat Ohio State."
This wolverine gets it
February 12th, 2021 at 8:04 AM ^
Unfortunately for us who classify as the “unwashed masses” without a subscription there’s no way to read the article.
I can, however, confirm there are wolverines in Alaska.
edit: I should add I’m reasonably certain there are Wolverines in the northern lower, too.

I got mine for free by giving a few bucks a month to npr!
I almost never use it though.

I thought national propaganda radio was free
(That was a joke, please nobody flame out)
February 12th, 2021 at 9:28 AM ^
you may like to think it's a joke, but it's actually a really poignant commentary on a certain party's worldview of victimhood and media conspiracy.
(That was also a joke, please nobody get all riled up)
February 12th, 2021 at 11:49 AM ^
i don't think they're victims/conspiracy types, just that the npr folks may have some hearing loss due to the echo chamber issues.
February 12th, 2021 at 1:12 PM ^
Can you say that again? I couldn't hear you. ?
February 12th, 2021 at 9:39 AM ^
I donated enough to PBS to get the "Alone in the Wilderness" DVD set....Dick Proenneke was a friggin' legend..... in Alaska, where there are Wolverines.
If you've never heard about this guy, check him out......
February 12th, 2021 at 10:24 AM ^
I've seen that. The guy was incredible, the very definition of the term "rugged individualist."
Or maybe "one tough mother" is a better description.
February 12th, 2021 at 10:27 AM ^
I've seen "Alone in the Wilderness" on PBS before during their pledge drives. It's freaking mesmerizing. The stuff that guy was able to do with simple tools and his own hands is so impressive. At an advanced age to boot.

surviving alone on mostly biscuits and beans....without even a dog to talk to.....not to mention a total lack of interaction with the opposite sex..... I admire what he did and to be honest it seems like a enticing lifestyle, with a dog and regular conjugal visits with a like minded ladyfriend.

I get you. Some prefer free open xenophobic media. It's a melting pot.
There is always more truth than joke in unsolicited joking.
February 12th, 2021 at 9:48 AM ^
There's a little truth in every joke.
February 12th, 2021 at 11:08 AM ^
I’m pretty sure the % of people who prefer any Xenophobia is a significant minority. But it’s a good way to shut down discussion and minimize views you don’t agree with.
February 12th, 2021 at 12:45 PM ^
It's a joke, right? Except if it is a joke topic contrary to your position. Minimize away....
February 12th, 2021 at 2:22 PM ^
I’m not minimizing anything.
Our ability and focus to discredit differing opinions as the sign of an immoral individual is a serious problem for all of us. But is seems to work for political power.
Most people want the same things.

Free unless you are a tax payer.
February 12th, 2021 at 10:59 AM ^
Fun fact: NPR gets no direct federal funding and competes for competitive grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that amount to about 2% of the annual budget. The rest is corporate grants, member station fees, and of course all those tote-bag lovin' MFs like me who support.
February 12th, 2021 at 1:02 PM ^
Yep. CPB's budget appropriation from the government for 2020 was $445 million which, when divided up among 145 million taxpayers, equals a whopping $3/person. And since only $69 million of that money went to these public radio grants, US taxpayers payed about 50 cents each for NPR.

I think you mean Northeast People's Radio.
Aside, to read the article just rig your browser with a plug-in / extension that blocks scripts. (Full disclosure: I read MGoBlog on a largely unmodified browser.)

My only problem with NPR is that whenever I get behind a car with an NPR sticker, I can be certain that I’ll be driving 5 mph below the posted speed limit.

Wolverines struggling to adapt to the current landscape. Yep we picked the right moniker.
February 12th, 2021 at 8:31 AM ^
I don't have a NYT subscription because I prefer to get my news from real sources, like InfoWars.

I use Ace’s Twitter. You should try that.

How are your doomsday plans coming along, Brutus? Been meaning to ask.
February 12th, 2021 at 8:47 AM ^
Weapons stockpile and non-perishable stash coming along (finally have a lighter weight semi automatic rifle the Mrs can handle), brand new whole house generator is installed and functional, but the basement bunker still needs work.
February 12th, 2021 at 9:03 AM ^
I didn't hear you mention anything about masks. How irresponsible of you.
February 12th, 2021 at 9:22 AM ^

February 12th, 2021 at 12:23 PM ^
How the hell did you get a photo of my son's room?
Come to think of it, I probably don't want to know.
February 12th, 2021 at 9:31 AM ^
Rifles are fine, ammo unless you are willing to pay through the nose is the hard part to accumulate right now.
I spent the last year putting together pieces of a rifle at what I consider market prices. (You can do it easier, the challenge was paying a reasonable price for quality stuff.) I figure it's going to take just as long to get together enough different types of ammo to give a quality test fire.
February 12th, 2021 at 9:40 AM ^
Already have a couple 12 gauge and plenty of buck shot. The recoil is too much for my wife who has a bad neck and shoulder from an auto accident.
February 12th, 2021 at 9:56 AM ^
You planned better than I. It never occurred to me there was a reason to stock up so I never did. Now I've got enough robber stoppers that I'm not worried, but I haven't been shooting for fun more than once in the last year.
February 12th, 2021 at 11:36 AM ^
in all fairness..... .22 LR is the preferred round to keep the freezer full, 5.56 mm is the preferred round to deter, .12 ga buckshot is the preferred round to end an invasion.... 9mm is just easier to carry, concealed.
February 12th, 2021 at 12:40 PM ^
What about the .50 caliber?
February 12th, 2021 at 1:47 PM ^
Only thing I remember from the Army is that hiding behind small trees doesn't help much against those.
Live rounds don't operate anything like TV shows them. Single most impressive thing I've seen in my life was an Air Force 20mm Gatling demonstration on some old Army half-tracks.
Obliteration. No other word could describe it.
February 12th, 2021 at 5:02 PM ^
That must've been something. The only shooting I get a chance to do now (I don't hunt anymore) is some clay pigeons with my 20 gauge and occasionally squeezing off a few rounds of my dad or brother's 9mm at a range.
