For those like me not in the know:

No. 16 overall player and No. 3 QB in the 2024 class per the 247 composite.

Plays in North Carolina.

No. 1 QB is already apparently committed to OSU and No. 2 is a Georgia lean.

This will be HUGE. Per Sam he will possibly commit this fall/winter and he changed his timeline. Hopefully, yesterday's visit was an absolute blast for him and it seems like it was.

I'm starting to worry about JJ's progress, though - but just a little.  He went from dropping dimes on deep throws to missing them to not even trying them anymore.  Also, on intermediate and shorter routes, went from dimes to quarters, and completely missed a few last night.  I realize the competition has gotten harder, but I can't reconcile the passing performance last night with the MSU secondary - which is every bit as bad as UConn's!

Is it player regression, coaching, poor play calls with poor routes, WR's?  I don't know, but the passing game just feels ... off.  I don't have confidence that they can move it consistently through the air anymore, if needed.  I mean, you have to balance passing with Blake fucking Corum, but there has to be more in the pass game, right?

Personally I hear you and it's easy to watch last night's game and, in the context of this season, begin to have such worries. I am not worried, just like I am not really worried about our red zone offense. The 'data' suggests there are problems but we are 8-0 and are really coming together as a team. I see room for more growth and evidence that said growth is happening overall even if it was not visible last night in the passing game.

The MSU game is a strange duck in almost every season. Weird things happen even when one team is clearly better than the other. I'm not going to let last night's thorough dominance of a hated rival get me worried. We are improving every week overall and are a super solid team at this point, clearly worthy of CFP consideration.

MSU’s secondary isn’t as bad as UConn’s.

You can’t just look at the stats; you have to consider game context. If State is playing straight up (that is, seven in the box), then yes, they struggle in pass coverage. But if they have 6 or 5.5 like they often did last night, they can cover a little. UConn is the absolute bottom of FBS talent-wise. Of course a mid-tier B1G team like State has better athletes than them.

Besides: Think back to last year’s game. On U-M’s final two possessions, when Michigan had to throw, they didn’t reach the red zone either time.

It was a weird game last night, kind of like the Washington game last year.  Seems like Sparty was playing in a shell and giving us 8 yards any time we wanted it, but wasn't going to let us hit anything deep.  We could only lose that game by getting baited into mistakes, and so we didn't.  Frustrating for those of us who want JJ to be in Heisman consideration, but if every team plays us that way we'll be 11-0 heading into Ohio.

He went from dropping dimes on deep throws to missing them to not even trying them anymore.

It's worth noting that this was the second week in a row where our opponents played their safeties way back to avoid big passes. In particular, both PSU and MSU seemed terrified of Roman Wilson.

And it's not surprising that teams are playing soft at corner and deep safeties.  The JJ bombs (mostly against lesser competition) are on tape.  Roman Wilson's long TD catches are on tape.  The threat is there and there is nothing worse to be in a game where you're overmatched and you give up a 70 yard TD pass that puts the crowd in a frenzy and gives Michigan a big momentum boost.  Death by a thousand paper cuts (short passes, running plays) where the larger number of plays run is just more chance that a turnover happens, is probably always preferred.

Well that's by design when you're keeping both safeties back.

I feel like you all want him to force it deep and risk the Rod Moore like pick...just because you're bored.

Moore was doing exactly what teams do to us all game. JJ wasn't making that throw that Thorne missed on. So why force it?

Just run the ball. Wear them out.

...but again, we're done with teams who are arrogant enough to think they can matchup with Michigan until we head into Columbus.  So that's going to bring safeties down to help stop the run.

Meaning JJ is going to get chances.

Hello recruits. We are the number four team in the country. We are among the top five programs getting players drafted into the NFL. We have one of the biggest alumni networks in the world.

This also feels like a much more stable recruiting relationship than the one UM had with Moore, who seemed like a guy who wanted to look around and may have only been talking to UM because of Gattis.

Hopefully the sign of yet another nice recruiting class.

It should be mentioned that lots of 247 analysts talk about how Wiltfong uses his crystal balls differently than most other analysts. He uses it not as an ultimate prediction, but as more of a indicator of where thing currently pointing. Nevertheless, this is a good sign

My theory on Wiltfong CB:

This is an indication that the deal is close to done and Wiltfong gets to put in 1st CB as the national guy. The confirmation will be if other crystal balls come in shortly from Michigan guys like Sam or writers covering Clemson, Tennessee, etc.

Yes please! Landing Jadyn Davis would be outstanding. It would more than make up for not landing Dante Moore or CJ Carr, plus it seems likely that he’ll bring some of his teammates with him.

I wouldn’t say it “more” than makes up for it. It’s certainly a great consolation, but I’d rank Dante Moore (evaluating him based on his Junior year to be fair to Davis) above Davis, but Davis above Carr.

Oh I absolutely love Davis as a prospect. I live in the Charlotte area so I’ve actually been able to see him play in person a couple times and I’d be more than happy to have him at Michigan.

I just see Dante Moore as a bit more of a high end prospect is all. Davis is one hell of a “consolation” prize, if you can call a 5* prospect that.
