Clarkie - are you sure about this “player development” angle?

Let’s look at some of the track record.  Last year, a Michigan DL only finished second in the HeismAn Trophy race.

And, there were two other Ohio players - who decided to play for Michigan.  Their careers - hmmm, not sure what to say about them.  I think one was named Demond (his last name - was Howard), and another player - his last name was Woodson (maybe his first name was Charles).

I just looked up some information - and, can you believe it - both Howard and Woodson - wound up winning that Heisman Trophy.

So, I guess Michigan can develop players - and, that includes Players from Ohio.

He's the 2nd best in OH for his class and it doesn't look like OSU has offered per 24/7.

Why are the Nutso's disrespecting him when he has offers from everyone else in the B1G 10 plus Georgia, TAMU, Notre Lame, etc?

Larry Johnson is a peerless recruiter when it comes to the DL, especially on the edges, but do any of his players get any better once they are on campus? And not just in the older/stronger way people get better with age and experience. The Bosas and Chase Young arrived fully formed. Then there are guys like Harrison who seem to be disappointing. Whereas Michigan recruits guys like Paye and Ojabo and turns them into All-Americans. I am sure this Robinson will eventually end up with OSU but if he wants to actually improve/hit his ceiling Michigan seems like a better bet.

Agree - That DL last year looked like dogshit. And nothing I've seen so far this year tells me that its significantly better... (it might be, just not seen it). They barely beat up on a ND team at home, that got beat up by Marshall. Show me how that DL looks against a good OL in the B10... other than UM, who else is there?!

The ND offense that generated only 80 more yards vs Marshall with 3 more possessions?

Truthof the matter, it’s really hard at this point to determine the strength of the OSU defense. It appears two bad offenses have been encountered. They look more disciplined with run fits and setting the edge than last year, but that is a low bar. The talent exists so a competent DC should form that group into a solid D. I don’t see a top 10 defense, but that might not be required if the super-talented O gets humming.

Exhibit A: Joey Bosa himself said during Johnson’s first year that it was a huge upgrade since it wasn’t just a bunch of screaming (by Mike Vrabel) and a lot more teaching and technique. There was also this Sam Hubbard dude that came in as a safety and is now a captain on the Bengals as a DE. The list goes on and on. Mike Hall been an absolute menace in the middle so far this year and Tuimoloau is showing why he was the #1 overall player in the 2021 class. I’m all for shitting on your rival, but trying to talk down on what LJ has done as a coach is downright absurd. As for Robinson, this is the classic Ohio kid slow-play that the staff does. Watch him through his junior year and once they know he’s a take, they offer him. They have to know these guys are takes before they offer because so many Ohio kids commit on the spot and don’t let the process play out very long.

Because unless they are absolutely can't miss players, the Buckeyes very rarely offer in-state kids early. The main reason for that is that you don't have scholarships to waste, but you don't want to burn a relationship with a local coach/football program by withdrawing a committable scholarship offer to one of their kids that you offered too early.

Urban Meyer infamously did that when he offered Massillon Washington QB Danny Clark as a freshman and then later withdrew that offer as Clark didn't develop as initially projected. Beyond being a crappy thing to do, it hurt the relationship between Ohio State and some local high school coaches, who then advised there players to go elsewhere until Day became Ohio State's head coach.

So, to avoid repeating the Danny Clark scenario, and since the post-90s Ohio State rarely have had issue landing the top Ohio talent, even when offered late, the Buckeye's policy is to develop relationships with Ohio kids but not to offer them until their junior or even senior years.

Yes please! Top Ohio kids come to Michigan and that is how we start selling more shirts in Ohio! That is the real goal after all isn’t it?

this very much falls in the Counterstrike category but there was a thread on r/michiganwolverines where someone commented that Robinson's dad is childhood friends with Clink.  The same poster also said that Jadyn Davis is trying to recruit him to UM.  I choose to believe all of this because I want it to happen.

Uh, that would be odd. He's craving for an OSU offer. From 11W this morning:

“I grew up an Ohio State fan, the only team I’ve ever liked,” Robinson said. “So (getting an offer) would be surreal. It was crazy even from the beginning. I never even imagined myself being considered to play at the college level, let alone at Ohio State. I appreciate all of my offers, but how many times do you get to meet the coaches or players of the team that you’re a fan of?”

“He [Larry Johnson] always jokes and says, 'At the end of the day, you’re going to be a Buckeye.'”

So did JJ, but OSU has a way of screwing things up.

"For 5-star 2021 quarterback and Michigan commit J.J. McCarthy, he grew up loving Ohio State, but that love is now gone.

“I used to love them, now I want to kill them,” McCarthy told the Athletic."

That's because the Buckeyes basically had their choice between J.J. McCarthy and Kyle McCord, and they went with McCord. I've heard that they liked both pretty equally, but the tie-breaker was Marvin Harrison Jr., who was McCord's #1 receiver and close friend in high school. If that's true, I am fine with the decision, because while the jury is still out on McCarthy vs McCord, Harrison Jr. has been fantastic for us (7 TDs over the last 3 games).
