Will Michigan retire Charles Woodson's #2 Jersey during OSU Game?

Submitted by KennyHiggins on

Warde Manuel cryptic comments today imply it is being discussed.  Heisman winner.  Class act.  Michigan Man.  Do it.

I'm all for hanging the jerseys or things of the like, but I'm not ready to say goodbye to these numbers. Plus, with the success Harbaugh will bring to this program, we'll be out of numbers in no time.

Whether you like the practice or not, Michigan has retired the numbers of its other two Heisman winners.  If you're gonna do that, you pretty much have to give Charles the same honor.  I'm in favor of it. As for running out of numbers, now that you can use duplicate numbers on offense and defense, that's not a real issue. And, we're not going to be retiring a slew of other numbers.  The most likely candidate has to be No. 1 for AC.

He could've done the exact same thing by just making it something for one game and one game only.

For example, the Devin Gardner thing is AWESOME if he wears #98 for that one game without most people knowing ahead of time, has the game of his life, and then goes back to his old number.

He could've did that for all of the retired legends that year. And then left it the hell alone.

We can still unretire all of the numbers and honor a Michigan legend every game. Whoever has that number wears the patch with the players name and we honor that player pregame. Then pick a new player the next game. This way you can do Braylon one year and AC another.

Just 1 game and keep it rotating. Now you can honor guys like Hutch or Renes or Morris or HARBAUGH. It doesn't have to be the retired number guys.

...meanwhile like I said, unretire numbers and for those players, figure out another way to memorialize and honor them.

I didn't hate the legends jerseys -- I hated that they felt like they had to have them all on the field/handed out at once. If you have an elite corner, let them wear the legends jersey of Woodson. If you have an elite WR, let them wear the #1 elite jersey. But don't give OK players the jerseys just to make sure they're all represented at once. Hand them out only when appropriate.

Or, just hand them out to anybody that wants them and not make such a big deal out of the number/position association. Let a player try to create a numerical legacy on their own terms regardless of position and not force them deal with the added pressure of being the next great (insert position here). This was the biggest mistake Brandon made with the Michigan Legends program. Besides, #1 is the only number that truly has a position associated with it.

Of all the things DB threw at the wall during his tenure, this was by far the least offensive. The only thing I didn't like was they always had someone give up their number mid career and switch to the legends number. If they gave them to incoming freshman who wanted the number and let them keep it for their entire time here, I would have zero problem with it.

No...and we should unretire the ones we've retired.

We need to honor these guys with plaques and small monuments at the stadium.

Stop restricting numbers - that's silly. Otherwise you've got to retire #1 and #21 as well. No, no, no. Find a better way to honor the legends. the patch wasn't it, but taking away the number forever is just as bad, IMO.

Gerald Ford (#48), Tom Harmon (#98), Desmond Howard (#21), Ron Kramer (#87), Bennie Oosterbaan (#47) and the Wistert brothers (#11) -- Albert, Alvin and Whitey -- had their jerseys retired in a ceremony against Ohio State on Nov. 28, 2015. At that time, Howard's No. 21 jersey was officially retired. Howard's was the only jersey of the six that was not formally retired at Michigan prior to the implementation of the legends program.

Someday, seems a bit early yet. Most retired jerseys and hall of famers are usually in their 50-60s. He's only 40 - just left NFL. He is the best player I've ever seen play. #10 will be too in like 30 years.

Denard would have his jersey retired before Brady. Tom is one of, if not, the greatest NFL player ever, but he’s not one of the top 50 players in Michigan history. Denard on the other hand, set a number of records and really helped the program in one of its darkest periods (performance wise)

Brady's senior year was as good as any season a Michigan QB has put up in the last 20-30 years.  He played at a Heisman level that season even if he had to platoon for half the season. The problem is that the rest of his career at Michigan was ordinary.

Denard was fun to watch but he's not realistically in this conversation.  Being good on a bad team isn't enough for a program of this stature.

Brandon actually had the right idea with the Michigan Legends program, but alas, just like everything else he did, the execution was poor. It was a great idea to put the numbers back in circulation but it was ridiculous to force players to change numbers midstream.

Too bad Michigan won't honor the players as they truly deserve with their name and/or number proudly displayed on the skyboxes.

If anyone deserves their number retired it's Woodson. That's said, retiring numbers in football is crazy. Too many players, numbers tied to positions. I'd rather have an honor in the stadium.

Do people not realize we already re-retired 11, 47, 48, 87 and 98 and retires 21 in 2015? Let them rest.

I like what they did at Comerica Park.  I would love to take a picture of a bronzed statue of Woodson making the INT against MSU, Desmond striking the pose against OSU, or even Tom Harmon scoring a TD against Cal with a drunk fan trying to tackle him.

Something like that would be classic.  Unveil it at midfield, then place it in the concourse area outside the stadium.
