Why the two-year hiatus in 2018 and 2019 with ND?

Submitted by Firstbase on
Not sure if this is being addressed elsewhere on the board, but I happened across this line in the ND night game article: "Notre Dame and Michigan are scheduled to play each year through 2017, then take two years off to play other teams, before resuming the rivalry in 2020 through 2031." I wonder which "other teams" would be more compelling than Michigan/ND scheduled games? Is this an unintended consequence of the Pelosi reconciliation health bill?

The ND series is great, but I wish they'd take more breaks from the rivalry so UM could play some elite teams home and home. Texas, Alabama, LSU, etc. I'd love to have some home and homes with teams like that - but it's not gonna happen if ND is on the schedule. ND 2 out of 4 years, or 4 out of 6 years would be great and replace the non-ND years with a another name school!

Come on now, you've been around the board enough to know. No politics. It's dumb to include that throwaway line at the end about a political issue the OP apparently has an opinion about. Did that line at the end improve the OP? There are plenty of other places on the internet to bring on jabs at Democrats/Republicans/Flat Earthers. This isn't one of them.

Yeah they snuck it in page 885 of the bill. Is this thread going to be one of those "Who should Michigan play" threads? If so, I say....Georgia Tech :) I'm biased, though.

Georgia State University's football team kicks off in the 2010-11 season. Their second to the last game of the year is against Alabama, which I guess they can do because, ya know, ESS-EEE-SEE!!!! But still, how apeshit would this board be if we scheduled a first year program? It's like clubbing a blind baby seal. With another baby seal.

You know how sometimes a small child will get hurt and will let loose a siren wail of a cry? The outgoing air vibrates the vocal cords longer and louder than should be humanly possible, and then there's that quick gasp when they hitch in enough air to belt out another deafening blast? That's why we're giving ND two years off - they need to breathe from time to time.

Since the series restarted in 1978, there have been three 2-year breaks--1982/3, 1995/6 and 2000/01. The break scheduled in 2018/19 will only be the fourth one in forty years. The current scheduling agreement runs through 2031. Assuming the agreement remains intact through Big Ten expansion and ND doesn't join the B10, etc., that means: 1. Michigan will have played Notre Dame as a non-conference opponent for 16 consecutive seasons (2002 through 2017) 2. Michigan could potentially play Notre Dame as a non-conference opponent for 28 out of 30 seasons (2002 through 2017; 2020 through 2031). This assumes there isn't another break scheduled sometime in the 2020s. I'm personally not too cracked up about that situation. I don't mind playing Notre Dame, but since Michigan (and the majority of other major BCS programs) only plays one major non-conference opponent per year, it means UM and ND are joined to the hip for at least a couple of more decades. Obviously, this could all change, but I would have liked to have heard about a major change up in the non-confernce scheduling. Instead of Notre Dame almost every year, put ND into a mix of teams that includes the big programs from the SEC, ACC and (current) Big XII. Anyone up for a road trip to Austin, Texas or Athens, Georgia? How about a night game in Baton Rouge or in The Swamp some future September? What about playing in Miami or how about a matchup in Atlanta with Virginia Tech to open up the season? There's lots of things Michigan could do with its non-conference scheduling--being "stuck" with Notre Dame the next two decades doesn't really excite me.

I vote for a WVU nc game in the near future. My second choice would be V-Tech. I live right on the border of the fanbases for each. Most of the inlaws are Hokie fans(with big mouths)...WVU would be interesting for obvious reasons.

1. Cal (biased, the @ game would be in my backyard) Tedford v. RR in the Best Public School Bowl with a student section Smoke-Off 2. Florida - RR v. Urban, yeah, good game 3. Texas 4. Alabama 5. USC 6. Nebraska 7. Oklahoma Yes, I know they are pipe dreams, but I have a lot of respect for OSU scheduling these types of games and win or lose, you bring esteem to the program on a national level (assuming no blowout losses, of course (ahem) Oregon). When they scheduled ND out to 2031, it was right about the time they extended FrontButt's contract and ND looked to be on their way back to national prominence and M, more or less, was still there, so that looked like a marquee game each year at the time. I think given the state of both programs as of late, it has lost most of its luster.
