Which quarterback follows McCarthy?

Submitted by b618 on February 27th, 2021 at 5:05 AM

Michigan doesn't seem to have a quarterback lined up in 2022 yet.

Michigan made offers to various guys:  Ewers went to Bucknuts, Simpson went to the Crimson Flow, Murphy went to the Texicans, Klubnic projected to go to the Fighting Clemsons, but maybe we still have possibilities there?

Which of the remaining guys might be a fit?

Or, will the next top candidate after McCarthy be from 2023?  There's a guy from Detroit who so far is looking good who likes Michigan.

Most likely Allar.

The practices have been incredible.  Weiss is a huge addition, and a difference maker.  Staff thinks they will have a huge weekend on recruiting front. Pretty sure it's already been covered but Will, Tatum, Trent, and Burnham seem to be formalities.

Coach Mo has all the juice in practice, and on the trail.  Reminds me a ton of coach Partridge.

Gun to my head I think staff would prefer Cade is the starter and MC adds about 20lbs.

Most players on the team thought that both recent LB transfers were not elite, and the team is using it as motivation.

Ronnie Bell the leader in workouts along with Ross.

Cheers

I'm enthused. Because now it seems we have a staff that can recruit since the years of Carr, but with a great head coach. Think back how we would have guys like Biakabutuka come out of nowhere, and great recruiters like English.  Now it feels similar. Hoke could recruit but was lacking in coaching.

The practices have been incredible. Michigan has turned the corner. The recruiting is next level. The new coaches are dynamite.

All due respect, but this is the same thing we hear every spring at this time. And every time people fall for it. It’s just hype.

Practices have been incredible- while fluff, would be really disappointing if less.   New young coaches who should be super enthusiastic.    Kids who had a short season, should be very excited to play.   Converse would be: new defensive coaching staff showing their inexperience- seem in over their heads.   Team still has hangover from bad season and aren’t showing full effort.   I am glad we are hearing the former, not the latter.

Weiss is a  huge addition and a difference maker - his resume suggests this is a very real possibility.   While young, has experience all over the field as a coach.   Still fluff and we will need to see more, but not unrealistic

Huge recruiting weekend expected - we will get to see this one for ourselves in 24 to 48 hours.    Not a crazy long term projection and consistent with other buzz.

Coach Mo hype - he has backed it up with early recruiting returns and we may have more to judge him on soon.   If he is not at a minimum a great recruiter and teacher, we are screwed    No hyping of him as a great game day coach which is the real question.

QB - no real hype and not going for the 5 star speaks for itself.

The LB transfer stuff - not really sure what to make of it - did anyone think our LB transfers were elite?

if someone starts calling Cade the next Tom Brady or says that Vincent Gray has really improved and us gonna be a difference maker, I can see the point.   But this blurb is all just fun (and somewhat expected practice hype you would expect for any team.

Another great update from a guy that always gets it right!  Thanks!!  But I don't understand this:

"Most players on the team thought that both recent LB transfers were not elite, and the team is using it as motivation."

So, how does the team get motivated by a player that leaves?  Did the transfers bad-mouth things on their way out the door?  Or does the team take their departure personally?  I don't get it...

As always, thanks for the insider info my man, great help.

It is good to hear positive things about the coaching staff's energy and recruiting chops. I was quite critical of these additions, and frankly, will still "wait and see" how they turnout, but this is a good direction.

I just really do not think Cade should be the starter next year. To be candid, JJ McCarthy is like the first round pick, and Cade is a 3rd rounder from a couple years back. I do not think Cade McNamara has the upside necessary for Michigan to reach the goals 2-3 years down the line they have. JJ will not be perfect, but he is the future of this program. Look at other programs and how they treat young QBs.

You must not have watched Cade play last year if you think he has no upside. The guy looked damn good when he played. He goes through his progressions nicely. He has good footwork and mechanics. He throws a very catchable ball and loved the team when he played  The team even reacted positively to him when he came out and he brought the energy up. Cade is very good and I think as good as JJ is he will have a very tough time displacing him. If JJ does start then he probably will be the next great college QB but if I was going to place a Vernon the starter next year my money would be on Cade

I agree with you.  I've hated how this staff has managed the qb situation here taking transfer after transfer and only leaving one or two years of eligibility for future qbs who may show signs of life but never quite get comfortable at the position at this level. JJ might have a rough start, but that only gets him ready sooner. And who knows, maybe he balls out early and hits the ground running.

Not really sure what you are talking about. Michigan hasn't taken a transfer QB in 3 years, since Shea Patterson transferred in 2018.

The only QB recruit in the Harbaugh era whose Michigan career was plausibly curtailed by a QB transfering in over him was Brandon Peters.

I'll personally never this board's irrational aversion to transfer QBs. Elite teams like Ohio State, Oklahoma, LSU, have no problem with leaning on transfer QBs but for some reason fans here seem to prefer players who have never taken a snap outside of high school.

While I personally suspect that McCarthy will be starting before the end of the year, let's at least wait until he practices with the team before anointing him as starter.

I mean, guys like Mitch Mustain and Christian Hackenberg were five star recruits. Not everybody works out, and some guys who do need more time than others.

Totally disagree.  Who starts as a true freshman and does well?

Even Trevor Lawrence started his freshman season behind Kelly Bryant, but was given equal playing time in the season's first games. Granted, Lawrence was named the new starter after four games but he may be a generational QB.  I'm not yet convinced that JJ is.  Let's bring him along properly.

First of all, Cade had one meaningful appearance and was remarkably good. There’s no reason to think he can’t cut it. He was a top recruit coveted by Alabama.
Second of all, if you name JJ the starter, there’s a good chance Cade leaves. This would leave us with a true freshman and Dan Villari as the team’s only scholarship QBs. And no one think Villari is viable right now.
So what you’re saying makes no practical sense. The team actually needs to give Cade every option to start. If he fails, then you turn to JJ and hope he can handle the pressure at age 18.

The fact the staff sees him as undersized and need to add 20+lbs to his frame is reason enough to let Cade start out. What we don't need is JJ coming in and getting blown up in game 2-3 and never coming into form like so many other QBs in the last 2 decades that never saw thier potential due to injuries or just being gun shy once the returned.

Good info GoJ.
Allar has a high ceiling with his size, arm and decent athleticism (limited film on the last point). Based on this link, he has either a great attitude or great PR savvy because he hits on stability, humility, gratitude, work ethic, teamwork and competitiveness in just a few quotes.

McCarthy will probably transfer before 2023 QB’s are on campus.

And don’t underestimate I.P. Freely. He will be taken for granted until he is not in our system.

Hey, OP, your title sucks in a "Justin Feagin" sort of way. My first thought when reading it was "What? Into the transfer portal?" (That's how well QB development has gone under Harbaugh.)
