Where is your Fandom in 2020?

Submitted by Monkey House on October 6th, 2020 at 7:17 PM

hello everyone,  hope everyone is staying healthy.  I'm not around much anymore so if this has been posted recently I apologize.  Im curious where your Fandom for Michigan sports in general are this year??

I will admit my Fandom for the football program is pretty low anymore, and basketball is getting there too. I think I'm just tired of the rampant "cheating" in major college sports. Maybe covid has made me realize I don't really miss sports much? Hopefully this season will pull me back in with some great games and a lot of fun.

Anyways stay healthy and Go Blue!

There is no question that the weirdness of 2020 has decreased my interest in all things sports. I mourned them when they all shut down in March, and then none of them registered as a blip as they started to come back. I didn't watch a single Tigers game, I didn't know the Pistons hadn't been invited back until the playoffs were well under way, and I haven't watched a minute of the Lions. It doesn't help that they all suck.

Regarding Michigan sports: I still am conflicted about the decision to even play football. I want to see some football; Fall Saturdays call for college football. But everything else that is happening in the world has made me much less interested than usual.

Maybe that'll change after the first game. Who knows.

Oh God no the feelings-posts are starting back up.  They had been pretty dormant post-Covid shutdown but I'm guessing the upcoming football start is the catalyst.

And we don’t have to hear that covid is a hoax. Or hear that it just affects old and obese people and they are expendable.  And we shouldn’t have to hear that people who only pay $750 in taxes don’t deserve health care and access to the latest drugs.

My sports fandom has taken a hit this year, no doubt. I'm not quite as enthusiastic for ANY sport since the onset of the pandemic.

However, the NFL still rules my Sundays, and when our beloved Wolverines take the field I'll be rallying behind them, as well.

I just wish for all of these sporting activities to keep the players safe, since not playing wasn't an option for these leagues.

This is my last football season before my first kid is born in the spring, so I'm ready to be a degenerate for 9-10 straight saturdays.

Dads, how did your falls change with an infant or toddler in the picture?

From '77, when I first got season tickets, thru '86 I believe I missed only 1 home game.  From '87 when my first born daughter arrived thru approximately 2002 I probably missed a total of 10 or so games.  I did, however, attend every home game of our NC season of 1997.

Since 2002 I've missed a half dozen games and most of them only when they conflicted with my son's rocket football schedule for 2 seasons, in 2005 and 2006.

My daughter was born In July 2019. She has watched every game Michigan has played in her lifetime (well maybe a few minutes of those night games while nursing to go to sleep)

This year will be interesting. Shes mobile, never sits still, and seems to favor Mickey Mouse over football....

I spend more money on babysitters (except this year). Even for away games you need a plan for who is going to handle the baby/toddler so you aren’t getting up to change a diaper or do bedtime during a crucial moment. I started watching with my Dad around age 6 and could go outside and play on my own by then. My kids are toddlers and they don’t have more than minute’s interest in actually watching.

If you attend home games book your babysitters well in advance and make sure everyone is ready for long days.

less time watching, but still time.  inculcated all the children to be big michigan fans regardless of gender.  they enjoy the games as much as i do.   and BB, when junior gets bigger you'll be coaching him (or her) and that's a whole 'nother level of fun.  you won't worry about missing the occasional game when you are able to see you children play.

I’ve gotta say, having the first kid during Covid sucked. Had our kid in April. 1 person only in addition to the mother during labor. Kid has jaundice? Sorry dad you’re out too. Leave the hospital. Then no one could help out or come over. We couldn’t go anywhere, everything was closed. No toilet paper. Totally sucked. Only good thing was I was WFH, but then I was watching a screaming kid, changing shitty diapers and feedings on mute during meetings. You like sleep? Forget it, gone. Time to yourself? Nope. But we asked for it, so, it is what it is. Just feel like Covid really fucked a lot up for us.

DVR the game, put your phone on silent, and start watching about an hour after it starts.  You can skip probably all the commercials unless the game runs long and get it done in about 2.5 hours, and you should finish right about real time so you don’t have to spend the day avoiding people who might spoil it.  I love UM football and my wife is generally understanding, but the hour saved makes a difference and it’s nice to not endure commercials during high tension moments.

This did not work well in 2018 when we had multiple weather delays, but what can you do.

I have only daughters. But bringing them into the "Michigan fold" has been fabulous. The first time they go to the Big House gives you the privilege of seeing the grandeur for the first time again through their eyes. And when they are of college age they become social media friends with the players and you get all sorts of insight. And then they text you throughout the games and it's fabulous. Yeah, the first two or three years of their lives are a little slow as far as football goes...

Very low, though I have been enjoying the NBA conference finals, and now the finals. Weird because I almost never watch the NBA. Other than that, I haven't been able to muster much of a GAF about sports this year. Even that is just a little distraction, and since I ultimately don't care probably makes it perfect for this time. I'm sure I'll come around when Michigan runs onto the field for the first time, but right now it still feels a little surreal.

Fellow Braves fan here! Was a little pissed to realize the entire round against Miami is basically on FS1, and apparently at work we subscribe to every channel but FS1...somehow the grain originators can watch SpongeBob on Saturday morning, but can’t get the Braves playoff games...

I only watch games from start to finish when my favorite teams are playing. So not having sports and then have sports back doesn't  and didn't matter.

I have been in the show me stage of Michigan football for sometime now. I will watch and cheer but I don't expect anything this year. This year is a tune up to next year. Whatever next year will be and even then, show me.

Long ago I realized that, for me, football is about the games themselves, the moments. High stakes and championships elevate that, of course, but I can get a lot of joy out of a good game. I've re-watched the last two MSU games, 2019 Notre Dame, 2016/18 PSU, and 2018 Wisconsin many times. They're still a lot of fun. Enjoy the highlights and don't burden yourself with the rest.

So I'm just happy (hoping) we're going to have some games.

I dont have high expectations for football, as I was really surprised by the McCaffery transfer and I dont know what to expect from Milton, although I am rooting for him, of course.

For other Michigan sports, I will follow their records and watch when I can, especially basketball and softball.

I am from New Jersey,  and like the Yankees, so that is going pretty well.  I also like the Eagles,  and am happy we are in first place in the NFC East, even though it is a really bad division.  Other than that, I root for Michigan players in the NFL.  For example, now I root for the Buccaneers,  not the Patriots, except for Michigan players like Winovich.

I don't follow the NBA, but am rooting for Duncan Robinson and the Heat to win, obv.

It hard to care about sports when your favorite teams are all terrible. Does a true fan stick by? Sure. Not sure if Im a true fan or a sucker for watching any of the Detroit teams year over year.

As for college football. I will watch every game and I hope this team surprises a lot of people.

I’m curious to see how my fandom is this season. Thus far I am kinda interested in a few moments of Lions games. I put the Tigers games on. I don’t know if it’s because the teams are bad or the pandemic but I truly don’t care if the Tigers or Lions win or lose. I haven’t felt any excitement towards any aspect of sports since January.

I can’t imagine being so ambivalent about Michigan football. I’m sure I will be intense about the games but perhaps that intensity has lost a step so to speak in the craziness of this year. Especially with respect to trying to get myself prepared for not being able to attend games. Them not playing, then they are playing etc.

hard to say. Been a fan for 40+ years (as long as I can remember more or less) and fandom does wax and wane over that time.

All of that said, there is only one team I like to watch.

The years may change you, and your hopes may go up and down, but in the end, there is only the Maize and Blue.

Loving sports more than ever. Covid hasn’t cowed me one bit. Living in fear isn’t worth living.
