Where are former Michigan coaches now?
Okay, I hate slow message board days. And nobody has posted anything since yesterday evening, and it had nothing to do with Michigan.
So here I come with a post about where former Michigan coaches (and players) are coaching now. The list is way too long to make an exhaustive one, but I tried to include the most interesting ones, especially the guys who are at the FBS level. A few highlights on new movement:
- Greg Frey is now the TE coach for Tulsa after being an analyst at South Alabama last year
- Joe Bolden is the special teams coordinator and a defensive assistant at Tulsa. He parlayed his time as an assistant at OSU to following Kevin Wilson this off-season.
- Roy Roundtree is now coaching WRs at McNeese State
- Biff Poggi is the new head coach at Charlotte and has several former Michigan guys on staff, including John Morookian, Ryan Osborn, and Greg Froelich
Here's the LINK if you want to see the full list.
I'd be interested to know what guys I missed. I'm even interested in where former players are coaching in high school, although like I said, I just don't have the time/resources to keep a list of high school coaches.
And nobody has posted anything since yesterday evening
Everybody is working on their "JD Comin' " post for Friday.
what about the Charley Boys
What about the Island Boys?
Above or below .500 we see 3 hello posts Friday about JD? I sure as hell have my hello post locked and loaded with very little information so I can be the first! /s
I'm sure we'll get 3+, with at least one of them posted on Saturday and at least one that misspells Jadyn's name
If it was 2.5 I would hammer the over. But I think 3 is going to be the right number before the mods and the board catch up to it.
Appreciate it Magnus.
as an alum of Detroit Catholic Central, I notice two former Michigan players are on staff: Cody Parton and Raymond Taylor.
What is your take of the new staff and what impact they will have recruiting on the high school level?
yes- I have taken the liberty of turning this post into a q&a
I assume you're talking about the new Michigan staff members.
Kirk Campbell is supposedly looking like a very good recruiter. One of my former high school players played for him, and he loves him. He says he's a great guy and has experience in a lot of different systems. I think (likely) sealing Jadyn Davis and making connections with Bryce Underwood, George MacIntyre, etc. are all good signs for Campbell, not to mention the fact that J.J. McCarthy seemed excited about the promotion.
We already know Chris Partridge is a standout recruiter. I see him offering guys down south in places where he has more connections, and I assume Michigan is going to try to dip into New Jersey a little bit more. My only issue with Partridge is wondering how long he will be at Michigan. I think he's a loyal guy - and he turned down offers from other places to come back to Ann Arbor - but at some point, another team is going to offer him a bag of cash and perhaps some more responsibility (once again) to go coach elsewhere. I don't foresee him being in line to be a coordinator at Michigan, so he has a ceiling in Ann Arbor. I wouldn't expect him to be at Michigan for more than 1-2 years.
Magnus - If Minter leaves, do you see Clinkscale as the next DC? I wonder if he's ready, but I would absolutely hate to lose him because he was passed over.
Yeah, it definitely sucks being on the treadmill of having to constantly replace good coaches as they leave to take promotions. Especially given the reality that some of them just aren't cut out to be successful in the higher positions.
Good programs do this consistently. It's just like the Patriots always having to replace coordinators, because other NFL teams or college programs always stole their guys (Weis, O'Brien, Crennel, Patricia, McDaniels, etc.). It happens at Alabama, too (Kiffin, McElwain, Sarkisian, etc.).
Harbaugh has a knack for finding and hiring good coaches.
I don't really see that happening. Maybe I'm wrong. It just seems like Harbaugh has really gone out of his way to find "geniuses" on that side of the ball. I mean, the story with Don Brown was basically that he looked up whoever had the best defense in 2015 and called that guy up to hire him. Then he got a wunderkind from the Ravens, and a guy similar to Macdonald in the form of Minter.
Given ample time to find a new defensive coordinator, I would expect Harbaugh to look somewhere outside the program for a great defensive mind.
Ray is moving up nicely. He's a baby clink, and someone we should keep our eyes on as far as the city goes (Detroit).
Kevin Koger is TE Coach for LA Chargers.
Jim Herrmann is D Coordinator for San Antonio in the XFL.
Erik Campbell is Passing Coord and WR coach at Bowling Green
Steve Morrison is Co-DC and Linebackers coach at Bowling Green
Khalid Hill and David Dawson are both on the Cass Tech coaching staff.
JG - Head football coach OLSM

Actually he's the HC at Jacksonville State. Was wondering how I missed hearing that RR replaced Coach Prime after he bounced to Colorado. Turns out I didn't, wrong JSU...
You missed one from the 1990s.
Was omitting Gary Moeller just an oversight? But he's dead too
You forgot “Gary Moeller - Dead”

Wow coaching at Michigan is dangerous
Only in the long term.
Seeing the former UM players on coaching staffs and moving up the ranks reminds me of something I thought about years ago - even for those guys who never sniff the NFL, playing for UM can be a huge career booster. It’s like interning at an elite consultancy or Fortune 500 company for those that want to stay in football on the coaching side. You still have to work your way up, and may not make quite as much as those guys that have longer NFL careers, but you can make a hell of a nice career coaching. And if you find a real sucker, maybe get an outrageous 10-year, $95 million contract based on hopes and dreams…

Tony Gibson - DC at NC State
Steve Morrison - DC at BGSU
Terry Malone - offensive analyst at LSU
Darrell Funk - OL at BYU
Just football or all sports? There are two to keep an eye on in basketball that are from the JB tree. They didn't play for us, but they graduated from here (undergrad and post grad)and are both rising stars. Moreso than Tree and even Bolden imo.
Jay Shunnar. Ann Arbor native with stops in the NBA and now at Cleveland State.
Eric Schmidt. East Lansing native was at Butler with Jordan and is now a key assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Both of these guys will be head coaches at some point. Super smart and personable. Juwan should bring at least one of these guys back home imo.
Go Blue
Woah, cool to see Jihad (Jay) mentioned. I went to Tappan with him and then he went to Huron and I went to Pioneer

Jay is my guy!
You didn't say what sport, so I'll state the obvious: former long time assistant hoops coach Brian Dutcher is at SD State and in the Final Four.
I just saw Roundtree last month when I was out to dinner near GVSU. Should have stopped and said hello. Bummer.
Whatever happened to Jeff Hecklinski, the guy Dicktonio beat like a drum at a HS athletes' conference. Came across as a wimp but hey Sparty's hatred was strong even back in those days.
He got fired from SDSU last year. I think he's working for a recruiting service now (not like Rivals, 247, etc., but a service to get kids recruited).
Love it. What about former basketball coaches and assistants? Whatever happened to Brian Dutcher?
Was quickly looking down the list but had to stop when I saw "Jordan Kovacs". Had to stop and remember how much fun it was to see him go from unknown walk on to star.
With our experience with him and the Glasgows we have really struck gold.
