What was Sam Webb's News?

Submitted by WestQuad on

Sam Webb teased that he had some big breaking news this morning, but then said there was some red tape that had to be cleared before he could announce it and that it might not be till after the show.   Did he announce it?   What do people think it will be?   New RB coach?  New Hockey coach?   Player commitment?    Wild speculation accepted.

I assumed it was about the rumored announcement of what this year's spring practice stuff was all about. Tons of smoke around it making a huge splash and turning a lot of NCAA heads, most sources have said we'd find out about it today.

The people who seem the most "in the know" would seem to be implying that that's too small.

Some of what I've read is that it will benefit all Michigan student athletes, not just football. And that guessing what exotic location spring practice would be held at is "thinking too small."

I honestly have no idea. Potentially a U of M training facility that's available for use by all student athletes in some cool part of the country/world?

Although I don't know how yesterday's news of the NCAA attempting to handicap trips for football players would affect this plan..

would be epic.

Open to all M athletic teams, sort of a home base for all teams that have to travel & play down south.  Special academic study center etc. "putting the student in student athlete".

Yeah, I can see the SEC blowing a gasket about a PERMANENT Michigan presence down south.

Oh, you didn't like us "visiting"?  Great, now we're moving in motherfuckers!

Harbaugh is going to have the spring game on the diag, and line his players up against the students' least favorite profs and administrators.

I've never seen a rule explicitly ruling that out, but I am almost certain it is made illegal indirectly by the restrictions on when the regular playing season can take place. I could be misreading it, because the spring game rules allow for one scrimmage, and I think this is the direct quote, "provided the game is with a team composed of bona fide alumni or students or both"

I suppose it does leave it open-ended on second read, but I've never seen such a spring game - one between two distinct teams like Michigan and Stanford - that I can recall.

while he was here. That combined with the fact that no one ever holds one is enough evidence for me that it's against the rules.

If that's not enough for others, basketball is allowed one inter-squad scrimmage with very tight restrictions. If it was allowed in football, the restrictions would be spelled out.

I was hoping a Spring Game Announcement was coming, O$U already announced their game for April 15, Nebraska and Penn State already announced theirs also.

What is Harbaugh doing these days anyway?  Recruiting?  Changing diapers?  Attacking the day with an enthusiam unknown to mankind?

I mean, come on, Jim... get your priorities straight and make that Spring Game announcement
