What (non-Michigan) coaching changes do you expect in the offseason?

Submitted by bluewave720 on

With the end of the season approaching, what kind of coaching changes do you folks forecast for around the conference and nation?

Will Pelini keep his job?  If not, who replaces him?

Will Narduzzi stay in East Lansing or will he get his shot at a head gig elsewhere?

Is Mack Brown back next year at Texas?  What about Muschamp at Florida?

Who will be the head coach of Southern Cal?

Any other predictions?

I don't know if he would take the job, but if you are Illinois, or heck even Purdue (granted its only been one year with Hazell) why wouldn't you try to hire Orgeron as your head coach.

He seems to be a tremendous recruiter and his players love him, he might be able to do well at a school with no real expectations. He will never me more popular then he is now, take a risk Illinois, you aren't going anywhere with Beckham.

I just want some Big Ten schools to hire some coaches outside the normal 2-3 year MAC success story.

I think the Ole Miss thing along with his general douchebagginess has him assigned to the D coordinator/ interim HC role. USC maybe makes him an inexpensive three year deal with a small buyout to finish riding out the sanctions.

I really don't expect too major coaching changes outside of jobs already open. The wildcard is USC. If they pull a coach from a big school then there might be some crazyness but I just don't see it. Next year could be wild though. You could possibly see Texas, Florida, West Virginia, Nebraska, Illinois, and maybe a surprise or two all come open. Most of the changes will be in the mid-majors this year in my opinion because all the coaches on the hotseat are too expensive to fire.

Look for Marriuci's name to surface as a USC candidate. I am not sure if that will happen.  I hear so many different things on Orgeron. I don't think they really know and Haden hasn't said much besides comfirm the Del Rio meeting. Jack isn't going there.

Had they looked good last night, Orgeron would be announced this week. Both losses were to rivals and they looked bad in both games.

Might sound capricious, but that's college football. Look no further than the majority of posts on this board the last 6 weeks. It's almost a week to week deal with the popularity dial of a coach.

Bo Pelini leaving Nebraska on his own.

Narduzzi---I'm not convinced head coaching is his future.  He might be a coordinator for life.

Cam Cameron might get a shot to be a head coach somewhere again.

... and he sucked in his one year at Florida.  But, on the filp side, he is known for being a good recruiter and he did succeed in making Matt Cassel look like an all-pro during his time at KC.

By no means am I touting him, just wondering if he even warrants a look in the eyes of U-M fans.

I thought Mack Brown had coached his way out of trouble after I saw them systematically take apart Tex Tech (despite that nifty fake punt by the Red Raiders).  It depends where their fan base and athletic donors are, really.  Everyone should witness the Michigan Experiment and know there's literally an equal chance of making things worse as it is better, especially when your program is in 8 win territory.  Maybe the pressure is getting to him, the hours demanded of any D1 coach are astronomical, and they pay enough at large schools that you can step back into comfort if it gets overwhelming.  Right now, from way out here in the cornfields south of Ann Arbor, I think he stays, unless the local clamor is too great.  I don't have a good feeling on that.

I really think Urban Meijer could be persuaded to leave Ohio and goto USC.  I think it fits his ego.  I think it fits the pay raise he could potentially get.  I think its a recruiter's dream to have that much in-state talent.  I think its sunny like 363 days of the year as opposed to about 55 in Columbus.  I think there's real wealth out there supporting the program.  I think Ohio is peaked out after this 23 win streak.  The senior OL is gone after two more games.  Their DC is under fire and potentially leaving.  Hyde is graduating and his backup isn't at the same level nor will ever be.  Braxton Miller is one injury from blowing up the entire season as there's no capable senior Kenny Guiton to backup.  USC was loaded with 5* talents and Meijer certainly has studied that.

Orgeron...I think he stays where he is.  I think he did a great job as a HC but he also picked up for someone seemingly universally hated.  I think he's a great guy on the field but a HC's job is also a part-time celebrity and I'm not sure where he'd fit with that.  I think he'd be happier to stay, and I think USC would do well to protect him, despite a HC change even if its just for his recruiting prowess.

Pat Narduzzi, I think he leaves...but where?  It wouldn't be a major program like TX or USC...no way in my mind.  The big boys want someone proven, even if its on a smaller scale as a HC.  He could go MAC, he could go AAC, he could go to Uconn.  The latter seems like an interesting opportunity.  If you could get that school slightly ahead of Rutgers and Maryland in the football universe, I think they could join the 16 teams slated for the "B16 = B1G" someday.  They look like a program with potential, just need someone to start grinding out the development of unheralded players.  I think Narduzzi fits that to a T.

I think Dantonio stays.  I think he loves having the history and expectations of an "underdog" so to speak.  I don't think he'd be happy (yeah, the damn guy's already pretty happy despite that scowl) at a big/major program where he was expected to win every season with 8+ wins, time and time again, with the pressure mounting.  Staee fans are thrilled to death with what they currently have, even a down year or two would be just fine as they don't want to go back into the dumpster for another 20.  I think he's also in a better position recruiting than ever before.  In the Rod years where M literally abandoned instate HS recruiting gave Dantonio an incredible boost.  For every "out of state" recruit that M goes after (Peppers,Speight, Ferns, Poggi, you name it) Dantonio mathematically gets a shot at another 3-4* recruit who's instate and would almost assurredly goto MSU.  Hopefully the upside of the elite players we recruit eventually leads us to a higher level, but Dantonio can build a kick ass team with a majority of 3* players as he has proven.

I think Bo Pelini's a gone ass, in 1 year's time.  I think the first year AD needs time to get his ducks in a row plus the large buyout.  I think Nebraska could stand a quirky or eccentric HC but Bo's just an a$$, witness nearly whipping the ref in the face with the button-tails of his baseball cap and the PR nightmare that must surround that is something that's going to be an anchor that the AD has to drag thru life.  I think their glory days are gone, but I think they can be a solid team going forward.  They need to be able to tap Texas and Oklahoma for recruits.  T-Magic is gone and their D looks winded.  I predict next year is going to be tough for them, leading to the eventual firing of BP.

I think this year's coaching carousel will be a relatively quiet one.

-USC will hire an NFL level guy, Orgeron will either stay on the staff of I could see him going to Louisiana Tech if they decide to end the Skip Holtz experiment

-If this ends up being true, and USC's new coach brings in a new offensive staff, I would love to see Michigan hire USC's currect OC, Clay Helton. Who has done a great job ever since Kiffin was out of the picture.

-Narduzzi will get a HC job at UConn, or Wake Forest if Grobe decides to retire

-Fickell is probably ready to be a HC, possibly Miami-OH or FAU because of their AD's ties to OSU and Fickell

-Pelinni, Mushamp, and Holgerson each get 1 more year

-Texas will keep Mack Brown for another year unless they get "their guy" i.e. Saban

-Petersen stays put at Boise

-Virginia keeps Mike London, ONLY because of his $8+ million buyout

-I think Jerry Kill should retire given his health concerns and give the job to Tracy Claeys, if not I could see Claeys taking a MAC HC job. Maybe Miami-OH

-If Indiana fires Wilson they are insane

-I'd love to see Tyrone Wheatley get the HC job at Eastern given his ties to the area

-I'm also interested to see what's going to happen with Dan Mullen at Mississippi State. I could see him being replaced by an up and coming coordinator, possibly Chad Morris (Clemson OC)

Like where? I doubt a big time program would hire him because of his lack of head coaching experience, and only having 4 years of college football coaching experience. Don't get me wrong, he's a great coordinator with a lot of upside and room to grow, but I'd be shocked if a big school like Texas hired him.

Mississippi State is a decent middle of the road SEC school where Morris could prove himself as a HC and then move on to that top tier in 4-5 years.

Dan Mullen is not going anywhere. He has won 4 of 5 against Ole Miss and will take Mississippi State to a fourth consecutive bowl game for the first time in school history. His defensive coordinator Geoff Collins had a unit that showed improvement all year culminating in holding Alabama to 20 points and only allowing Ole Miss's offense to score 3 points. Their two best QB's were injured much if the season and Mullen still managed a 6-6 record which is acceptable in Starkville.

I know USC is looking for a big name coach, and it is a great job but I keep hearing everyone talk about Jack Del Rio as one of the leading candidates for the job. Am I crazy for thinking that doesn't really qualify as a big time attention grabbing hire? But I guess with Sumlin seemingly out of the running Del Rio might be their best option.

Why would Meyer leave OSU? There is no way they don't out bid every other school. OSU has some serious deep pockets.

I think all of the B1G head coaching jobs are safe, assuming Eichorst is being truthful about keeping Pelini for another year. Looking at the power conferences, I think Washington and Texas are the mostly likely to fire their coaches, leaving open two very nice spots. Charlie Strong is itching to jump to a bigger program, and I think Texas gives him the nod. Narduzzi could replace Strong at Louisville.
