At what level of obsession are you at with Michigan Football?

Submitted by icefins26 on
Awhile ago, someone posted a thread on the MGoBlog community about their obsession with MGoBlog. It's obvious we are all die-hard fans of the maize and blue but to what level? To what level has everyone altered their so-called "normal lives" around Michigan Football? Discuss.

After graduating from UofM I moved back home and met my future wife.  After being home and job searching I finally got a job back in Ann Arbor and I offered my girlfriend at the time to move out to Ann Arbor with me but I gave her one condition:  She can never have me do anything on Saturdays in the fall.  She looked at me weird and I told her I would not be missing one Michigan home game for anything and that after the Michigan game is over I have to watch football the rest of the day.  She said ok but I don't think she understood exactly what I meant.  2 months later she let me know her Aunt who is only a few years older than her was getting married and she was going to be in the wedding.  I asked when and where was the wedding and she said in the U.P. on the second Saturday in September.  I looked at her and said have fun at the wedding but I can't go because that is a home game and that is when she realized I was serious.  She told the family I had to work all weekend.

That is one example but I have missed 3 family weddings & about 5 friend's weddings because they were scheduled on home football games.

Last October, my now ex-gf of 2.5 years father was getting married. She wanted me to go to the wedding of course, but this was the recent grad reunion and I knew people coming in for the game, so I told her I wasn't going to make it as I had not missed a kickoff in 6 years.

Needless to say, the pictures looked great. And I ended up breaking up with her.

I live in east lansing, which sucks enough.. but I rep things pretty hard...

I'm currently at my desk with a 6'x4' M flag above it. I have a michigan mouse pad, water bottle and coffee mug on the desk. I am sporting a Coach's Polo. I convinced our boss to make our latest product Maize and Blue. Brian's Kobayashi Porcelain Co. sits above my desk. I got a dog (yellow lab mix), got her a Michigan collar and leash and named her Maize (they love her at the East Lansing dog park). I use my Block M Alumni Credit Card as often as I can. I have M plates on the car, license plate frames and everything.

I just beat Uconn, ND, FCS East and BGSU by a combined 156-16 in NCAA 11.

luckily the GF is a michigan alum and football lover as well. I just got back in town from the art fair, and my next planned vacation is back to AA on September 4th.

I registered for the October LSAT last week which is on October 9th*.  In what is most certainly in violation of all the universal rules of test preparedness, I picked the Angell Hall testing site as opposed to the one less than five minutes from where I live (an hour from Ann Arbor) because there was no freakin' way I was going to miss our revenge game against MSU.

I understand this is completely illogical and will involve crashing at my friend's condo in Ann Arbor the night before/probably getting little to no sleep/contending with the distraction that is being in Ann Arbor on MSU weekend, but I'm totally doing it.  The LSAT is scheduled to start at 8:30 I think, so even if it goes a little over I'll still catch a majority of the game.

*The only way to qualify for the October 12th date is if one observes the Sabbath on Saturday, which I don't but totally considered.  See? Obsessed.)

Unfortunately, it's been apparent for a while that there is a small group of 14-yr olds who visit this site. The negging is no different than a giggling middle-schooler ringing somebody's doorbell down the block and then hiding in the bushes to see the result. It's irritating, but that's what juveniles do.

It was me and my two created usernames (a2tarheel and waikiki) that has partaken is some serious negbanging recently.  Why?  I have no idea.  But I loved every second of it at the time, but now I see the error in my ways.  So I have a statement.

In all the decisions I have made in my public life, I have always tried to do what was best for the MGoCommunity. Throughout the long and difficult period of Neggate, I have felt it was my duty to persevere, to make every possible effort to complete the term of office to which you elected me. In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough MGoPoints base in the MGoBoard to justify continuing that effort. As long as there was such a base, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future....
I would have preferred to carry through to the finish whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so. But the interest of the MGoCommunity must always come before any personal considerations. From the discussions I have had with MGoBoardmembers and other leaders, I have concluded that because of the Neggate matter I might not have the support of the MGoBoard that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the MGoCommunity would require.
I have never been a quitter. To leave MGoBoard before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as kindofabigdeal, I must put the interest of America first. America needs a full-time kindogabigdeal and a full-time MGoBoard, particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad. To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both kindofabigdeal and the MGoBoard in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home. Therefore, I shall resign the kindofabigdeal.

I took my LSATs in (uh, many years ago), and finished in time to get home to have a brew before walking to the Iowa game.  You'll have time.

Isn't Michigan football one of the basic essentials of maintaining life? It's one of the core activities of the body, regulated by the autonomic nervous system.

I'm the guy with the little TV that everyone is looking for at the weddings on my clueless family members that decide that ---Fall is a good time for a wedding?????

I don't take phone calls during the game. I pace around nervously and am prone to random outbursts at the TV.

When they lose, I take it personal. My whole day is ruined and usually the few days following. I consider myself a diehard fan.

I learned the behavior at a very early age from my mother's side of the family. They make me nervous watching the game and that's saying something.

A while back I needed to establish an error proofing system for a high volume product at work that used a vision system to confirm proper assembly. The solution needed to be human readable (different colors) and machine readable (high contrast between colors). I ended up picking maize and blue...'scrazy; don't know how that happened.

To the point that I have my daughter practicing her SAT's so she can be granted admission when she graduates high school.  She is currently in grade 7.

I started going to UM games when I was 7 years old, and have been to at least 3 games a year for over 24 years.  I am not as blessed as some of you who are able to get out of fall weddings, though. My wife is a bit of a battleaxe at times, and she simply won't take a football game as an excuse for missing a wedding. I keep thinking that one of these years, our friends will stop getting married, but in the back of my mind I know it will never stop...

The bright side is DVR, and I just have to make sure nobody tells me what happened (don't look at any TV's either...).  I guess I'm somewhere in between obsessed to the level of doing nothing else in life but root for Michigan and trying to make time for UM football whever possible.  My daughter is only 8 months old, but already is a huge Michigan fan. She owns many UM clothes, and she is working on humming the victors right now.  I fly the Michigan banner at Bonoroo every year, and I always get fans and haters that come by to chat. The people who come with me are always amazed at how many strangers are drawn by the flag. Go Blue!!!

I have had an alarming increase in gray and loss of volume on my scalp over the past couple of years.  It is clear that my physiology is in tune with Michigan football and, therefore, I want Michigan to succeed more than most of you.

I dont understand the question? How has it affected your "normal" life.

I've been marking my personal memories by Michigan and Big 10 football for over 30 years. I dont know any other way. That is my normal life.

Saturdays during the football games, my wife takes the kids out to the mall just so they cannot hear me screaming and yelling and swearing. Lets just say the last 2 seasons, during the games, the noise level in my house was pretty high.

Or RR cannot hear as well as Lloyd, because I swear I've yelled more and louder at the TV the last two years but it hasn't worked as well as in the past.  It's like RR can't even hear how pissed I am at them losing from 100 miles away!  If there's any sign that RR is out of touch with the majority of the Michigan fan base, it must be this!  FIRE RICH RODRIQUEZ!!!!

I break things and go into comatose for the next seven days, if we lose, with hopes of being revived the following Saturday. My girlfriend hates September - November. I bailed on a best friends wedding (which I was in) early, to watch the opener last year against Western.

Needles to say a very large substantial amount.

To the point that I am TOTALLY despondent that I pretty much have to work every Saturday this fall exept the opener, which falls on Labor Day weekend. My wife doesn't get why  I'd rather stay home and watch the game than go to GM and make time and a half for ten hours. Women.

I confuse New Yorkers. I confuse my family. I have enough Michigan apparel for a week's worth of full outfits (shoes, socks, pants/shorts, shirts, sweatshirts, bellybutton ring, everything). My car has at least one Michigan thing per viewing angle. I have a Michigan poster and antique pennant from my grandpa above my bed, which is covered in blue sheets and Michigan pillows. I also have a 5' x 3' hockey flag hanging up in my apartment, though I left my jerseys in Michigan. One of my walls is covered with the most recent roster from mgoblue, numbers on front, names etc on back of post its. I have opening day countdowns on my phone, laptop, planners, etc, and have every football game and every home hockey game in my phone's calendar. I have already picked out my gameday outfits, and started saving for away games and I should be going back from my lunch break right now but I'm still sitting here on mgoblog, on my laptop with a totally non tacky amount of Michigan stickers.

I visit Mgoblog at least once every hour. When the Tom Brady MacFarlane figures came out I bought four. My work desk is littered with Michigan paraphernalia. I brought a picture of Rich Rods buzz cut to the barber once, we have matching hairlines. I miss Garret Rivas. To name a few.

random unhealthy proofs:

my friends worry about my well being/state of mind after losses... exp: last yr my fraternity had a mixer of sorts to watch the iowa game, it was with a house we didnt know well and should have been trying impress, instead i didnt talk to one girl, paced around the whole game, and believe i started swearing incoherantly in the fourth quarter then left right after the game to walk blindly around ann arbor and eventually blacked out on a random friends couch a mile from my starting point

my last yr in high school was 3 yrs ago ... if you remember the appy state game was the first michigan game on btn and their was a huge cable dispute over it ... my family always camps up north for labor day and it was my first break from highschool football in a month ... still i spent 3 hrs driving to every bar in a 60 mile radius trying to find the game whle listening to it on the radio... at the end i had a few dry heaves because i felt so sick from the loss

really, it has gotten to the point i cant watch road games with other people, esp. fans, it just makes me to nervous and/or they fear for their lives because i like to throw things when i am displeased with a result

i am at the stage where i follow recruiting pretty closely and am yet a little reticent/ashamed to let people i know know that I read more of what highschoolers have to say than i do most other media/public figures
