What are our feelings about Jim Harbaugh's Decision that he has to make?

Submitted by WalterWhite_88 on January 12th, 2024 at 10:47 AM

I know for me personally, I won't really be upset if he goes to the NFL. I'm so grateful that he brought us the ever elusive National Championship, so if he wants to go to the NFL at this point, then I'm fine with it. This will probably get me negged, but, actually, part of me almost wants him to go to the NFL because I'm so appreciative of what he did for us that I'd love for him to be able to pursue his ultimate dream of getting a Super Bowl ring.

I think his fam is certainly the X factor.

I'm not sure of the ages but I do believe he has a couple high school aged daughters, maybe a middle school son, and son in elementary?  Pretty sure if you polled them they wouldn't be too excited about picking up, moving to a new city/schools, and finding all new friends.

"Those who stay... are already champions but maybe let's make the guy who hired his brother to investigate Michigan football lose his job by beating him for the fourth time in a row."

Has a nice ring to it.

He has earned the right to do whatever he wants. I *really* want him to stay, but I can’t possibly ask more than he has given. And particularly since I was in favor of firing him in 2020, I have no right to expect him to show me more loyalty than I showed him. He’s given us better than we deserve.

I hope he stays, but whether he does or not he’s the greatest Michigan man of my lifetime.

Leaving for another opportunity isn’t a right he had to earn. I appreciate your honesty in admitting you wanted him fired. Many others aren’t willing to do that. But what it demonstrates is that a coach doesn’t owe fans any loyalty, because all most care about is winning. Even though Harbaugh improved the football program greatly from where it was before he arrived, up until 2021 it wasn’t good enough. If he stayed and had a couple of disappointing seasons, the firing talk would begin again. If the Super Bowl remains his ultimate goal, he should leave to pursue it, assuming he gets an offer. He’s 60 now and this may be his last chance.

His "I can sit at the big boy table now" comment Monday night may be telling.  I think he hungered to win it all, at either college or the pros.  He may have suspected that the NFL offered the easier path, especially after our excellent 2021 team got blown out by Georgia.  He then flirted with the Vikings - the closest he's come to leaving for the pros.

But now he's done it here.   He and John have each climbed the mountain at their levels.  Maybe he'll be at peace with that.

This is per Harbaugh to Mitch Albom after he didn't get/take the Vikings gig:

Harbaugh says his focus now is a national championship.

“Sure, the Super Bowl is the greatest prize in our sport,” he said. “But winning a national championship. That’s pretty darn great. Let’s do that. There was a pull to the NFL because I got that close to the Super Bowl, but this was the time [to try and return.]"

Again? Why? He will go. Or he will stay.  We’re going to find out in the next several days/weeks.

For now, we can bask in the light of a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

FFS - it hasn’t even been a week!!!

I won't be upset if he goes, he did everything we hoped he would here. I do kind of wonder if he woke up on Tuesday morning finding the burning need for the Super Bowl suddenly somewhat lessoned... like he said, he made it to the big person table. We've all joked about John ribbing him over the Super Bowl ring but you know in that moment he must've told Jim that they'd both reached the same summit.

Same as I felt when Lebron left for the Lakers.  He did what he came to do, deliver a championship, so he's happier somewhere else - I have no ill feelings towards him at all.

Hope he stays.

Think he'll leave

I would be ok with whatever he decides to do. I would rather him come back, but a part of me is ready to see what is next.

I love Sherrone, but I really hope Deboer is the guy if JH leaves and the Bama job goes to someone else.

Never forget how people trashed him in 2020.  No matter how close we came to beating OSU before, he was dragged through the mud.

Winning a championship is hard.  Beating OSU is hard.  Dealing with the NCAA is hard.

I'm ok with him moving on.  I'd hate to see the fanbase turn on him again.

I'd hate to see the fanbase turn on him again.

I think it would take some truly lousy seasons for the UM fanbase to truly turn on him again the way it was after 2020, but any NFL fanbase will turn on him even quicker if he doesn't get his team on an immediate and steep upward trajectory.

WOW!!!

No one has ever talked about this topic before.

Why can't you enjoy the moment for awhile, like most everybody else.

Why do people always ask to get a NEGbang?

I thought we were here to enjoy all things MICHIGAN!!!

He delivered us a National Championship so nobody outside of the most absurd fan should be mad at him for leaving fi he so chooses. That said, I would like for a decision to be made fairly quickly for the good of the program as far as team composition goes. That’s really the only two thoughts that seem rational on the matter.

He has earned the right to do whatever he wants to do and still be looked at as a Michigan legand, both as a player and a coach.

I went into this year thinking, "if we somehow win it all, he's gone to try to win a Super Bowl." Then I thought it was a 95% chance. Seeing how much fun he had this season, even with that going on, I bumped that down to a 70% chance. I still think it's more likely than not he tries the NFL again.

That said, I'd be just as excited with Coach Sherrone Moore next year, especially if we hold together the core of this staff and bump just about everyone up a level.

I’ve reached a point where my reverence for Harbaugh may outweigh my reverence for Michigan football. There is no current success without him. There is de minimus future success without what he has done.

If he leaves, I will be his biggest cheerleader. If he stays, I will be his biggest supporter.

He is the best coach in the history of the program. I understand what Yost and Crisler did but we were playing the YMCA and Mechanics Local 1 back then. It’s a different era now and requires a different degree of ability and leadership. Harbaugh has it to a degree no other that has been in Ann Arbor had.

If he makes the decision to leave, I will respect and admire him for it and start cheering for that team. I also think he’s built such a foundation that whomever is next will absolutely be able to defend the title.

But I hope he stays. It’s clear that the magic of Ann Arbor has his hooks in him and his family. Those emotional ties are massive and can’t be discounted. He can be the best coach in the history of college football if he rides it out here.

But if he goes, and wins a Super Bowl or two, he can be the best coach (all around) of all time. For a man driven by challenge and competition, I can’t fathom him passing on that.

I understand what Yost and Crisler did but we were playing the YMCA and Mechanics Local 1 back then.

There were plenty of those types of opponents during Yost's early years at UM—the same was the case for every other prominent program of the day—but that was not the case for Crisler.

I will echo Don's comment, don't sleep on Fritz Crisler.  We are basking in a golden age for Michigan football right now, and this team is a member of just a handful of transcendent Michigan teams.  But we should not attempt to take anything away from the Mad Magicians, they were as dominant of a team as any in Michigan history, going undefeated with a margin of victory that averaged 40 points per game for the entire season.

This position he is in at Michigan is perfect for someone like him, but he has many options.  As an outsider, I'd say his life as a whole is most likely to become legendary here, and I really want him to stay here and keep up the combination of winning while pushing for athlete rights & compensation, etc.

I respect whatever decision he reaches / makes.  I'd definitely prefer he continue coaching in Ann Arbor - until he decides he wishes to stop coaching.

Far from me to tell anyone (besides my children) what they should consider doing.   However, it does seem to me that Harbaugh gets a great deal of personal satisfaction though a realization by impacting people's lives.  He can impact more young men - helping them grow into productive citizens and building on their God given athletic abilities in Ann Arbor than he can in any NFL setting.

I will be very upset if he goes to the NFL, because I love Michigan and college football in general and have no interest in the NFL.

Leaving the best football program in football history to go coach "the Chargers" (or whatever stupid-ass team has an opening) in the Globobank Dome or wherever the fuck they play?  No, fucking vomit no.

How do you know that's his "ultimate dream"? I've never heard Jim Harbaugh say anything like that. But I do see lots of random people asserting that as the case. Same as the last few years when everyone was so certain he was leaving.

I just don't understand why people have to fill in blanks with pure guesses, and then talk as if those guesses are reality. It's frustrating, a d goes directly against things that Harbaugh has actually said.

Here's what I posted in the Bill Belichick thread:

The previous years of NFL flirtations took years off my life, but this year I'm at peace.  Harbaugh has brought Michigan to the very pinnacle of the sport, has slain all the dragons, had a perfect season, and closed out the 4-team playoff era with Michigan on top.  The first year of the CFP era (2014) featured 5-7 Michigan missing a bowl, and OSU winning the national championship.  Hauling Michigan up to the top, and having to get through our most hated rival, having to knock them off their perch to get there, is an incredible accomplishment.

I'd be thrilled if Harbaugh decides to spend another decade here.  But if he wants to go win a super bowl, I wish him the best of luck and only ask him to not totally raid the assistant coaching staff on his way out the door.

I'll add this:

The arc of Jim's tenure here at Michigan so far is almost unparalleled.  The 4-team CFP era ran for essentially a decade that coincided almost exactly with Jim's tenure here.  When Jim took the job, making the playoff was THE thing that defined success, and Michigan was worse than an afterthought.

Most of the teams that made those first couple CFPs (I'm thinking specifically of Alabama, OSU, Oregon, Clemson, Oklahoma) set themselves up for a long run of success in recruiting due to being prominent at "the right time," at the start of this era of CFB.  Those teams in many ways DEFINED the 4-team CFP era, and one of them stands directly in the path of Michigan even getting to the playoff every single year.

I think it's hard to overstate how deep of a hole Michigan had dug for itself by being bad in the first year of this era.  Jim had to fill in that hole (which he did with remarkable speed practically in year 1) just to get Michigan back to a baseline of relevance, THEN he had to start laying the foundation to get Michigan to the pinnacle.  The fact that OSU was in the midst of one of their best-ever stretches of football (out of a grudginlgy excellent history) made that task almost impossible.  But he eventually overcame all of it.  He beat OSU 3 straight times, won 3 straight conference titles, ended Saban's career with a loss (!) in the Rose Bowl (!!), and decisively won the last edition of the 4 team era (!!!).

I guess what I'm saying is that from a narrative perspective, this can't be topped.  Jim could stay at Michigan, and he could have more perfect seasons here.  I'd be thrilled if he did.  But this whole arc, from early 2015 to early 2024, just can't be topped.  I don't see how it's even possible to imagine something more inspiring and impressive.  If Jim wants to leave on CFB on top, and on his terms, I totally understand and would wish him nothing but the best.

Great post. I'm also going to add that Jim and staff and the team did this while also overcoming institutional roadblocks vis-a-vis the transfer portal that other teams just don't have to deal with. Despite this, Jim and staff STILL found amazing transfers that were able to matriculate and stay eligible. (I'm listening to the podcast again and Brian is talking about this right now).

Makes everything even more amazing.

No neg from me, I'm still on cloud nine.

Jim brought us to the top of the mountain. I want him to stay, but if he wants to go to the NFL, that's great. If he wants to go home and raise chickens, that's great.

I'm fine with all of it, but if we can keep Jim and most of the staff, our expectations year-to-year go WAY up. Like, in the conversation most years. And that would be amazing.

Jim, stay. Look at MGoBlog once in a while, here's the love.

I agree with your take and gave you an upvote.  I think the downvotes are mostly due to the fact we don’t need to rehash this particular feelingsball issue.

He either stays and is here until he retires, or he’s gone and chases another dream.  He has my full support either way.
