Weiss on leave due to police investigation
Ummmm not sure what this is about, but doesn’t sound good.

Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss has been placed on leave, according to an athletic department spokesman, as the school's police department told ESPN it is investigating a "report of computer access crimes" that occurred in December at the team's football facility.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:42 PM ^
In a statement to ESPN, Weiss said: "I am aware of the ongoing investigation by the University of Michigan Police Department and fully cooperating with investigators. I look forward to the matter being resolved. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, I will not have any further comment."

Gotta think if he put out a statement about it that it's not that serious
January 17th, 2023 at 8:46 PM ^
My thoughts as well. I feel either it's not that serious, or he'd be lawyered up/no comment. Another option is totally clueless, I suppose.
I'd caution folks from jumping to conclusions based on ESPN reporting that was only published about 15 minutes ago.

Multiple police officers went to his house and the school put him on leave. You're a crazy homer if you think this would happen over a nothingburger.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:09 PM ^
Though it could happen over a Brown Jug burger.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:17 PM ^
Fingers crossed he was a victim or inadvertent conduit but on first glances doesn’t seem great.
Hopefully we aren’t looking at the really bad stuff.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:35 PM ^
he hacked into santa's (YTS) naughty and nice list
January 17th, 2023 at 10:09 PM ^
More like Naughty or Weiss
January 17th, 2023 at 9:36 PM ^
Yeah, anyone acting like this isn't serious is fooling themselves. I don't honestly know what constitutes this offense; my first inclination with computer issues was particularly heinous but usually they'd make that claim explicit. It's my understanding that computer access crimes are basically in addition to the underlying crime, like aggravated crimes wherein a weapon was used. So it remains to be seen what comes of this but not good.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:33 PM ^
It could be worse. I could be like Zach Smith ordering sex toys
January 17th, 2023 at 8:59 PM ^
Computer access makes me think that maybe he was hacking into places he wasn't supposed to be. Really hoping it wasn't TCU. But with that many police, I don't know.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:07 PM ^
If it was TCU, he needs to go back to hacking school.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:10 PM ^
It's fairly obvious that it was Georgia because we were obviously looking past TCU.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:24 PM ^
this comment deserves all the upvotes
January 17th, 2023 at 9:10 PM ^
It's also not like that sort of thing hasn't happened before. See the Cardinals being docked 2 draft picks and fined $2M for hacking into the Astros email system and scouting database in 2017.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:46 PM ^
Or he accidentally clicked on a link to see how hard college girls are working to afford rent.
January 18th, 2023 at 8:46 AM ^
Googled "sunny dykes" and ended up in the wrong place
January 18th, 2023 at 9:48 AM ^
take your upvote and get out
January 18th, 2023 at 9:54 AM ^
If it was TCU then there’d be no crime, because he obviously could get the dam computer to turn on.
January 18th, 2023 at 8:15 PM ^
Maybe he was just hacking CRISP to reserve himself a good spot.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:36 PM ^
Well, the offensive game plan for TCU was criminal.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:25 PM ^
Computer access crimes? I hope this isn’t something really disgusting
January 17th, 2023 at 8:29 PM ^
Yeah there are a lot of really terrible destinations on that road.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:11 PM ^
I know what you're suggesting but let's not mince words. You're afraid he was using University resources to play Madden and calling nothing but Philly Specials. (And wanking to it.)
January 17th, 2023 at 9:55 PM ^
So that’s why my buddy said, “Does he get off to that or something?” after he saw that play…
January 18th, 2023 at 9:57 AM ^
Maybe he hacked Harbaugh and put the Philly special in the scripted plays not thinking he’d notice. That’s the only rationale I can come up with why ( brick wall Harbaugh) would call such a dumb fuck play.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:31 PM ^
That was the first thing that came to my mind as well. Ugh
January 17th, 2023 at 8:52 PM ^
The fact that it’s U-M police and not the FBI makes me think it’s on this side of *that*, but who knows. We’ll find out when we find out.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:58 PM ^
Do UM police have unmarked cars? Serious question.
January 17th, 2023 at 11:21 PM ^
That sounds like a reasonable deduction. Let’s hope, anyway.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:15 PM ^
I'm not a lawyer, but to me the word "access" points away from that. Sounds more like he was trying to get information he shouldn't have
January 17th, 2023 at 9:19 PM ^
It's not. There would be feds involved if it were.
January 17th, 2023 at 11:19 PM ^

FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY
SCHEMBECHLER GLENN E HALL1200 S STATE ST
An employee reported fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university emails accounts without authorization. Upon further investigation, It was found that a crime may have been committed.
January 18th, 2023 at 12:07 AM ^
Yeah, good find. I regret that I can only give you one up vote. This makes it sound like someone was accessing UMich accounts, which, uh, well, I would be curious what my boss was saying by email when he is very publicly considering other jobs, but not that curious.
January 18th, 2023 at 1:31 AM ^
Yeah or maybe reading a player’s email? Honestly that is a really big deal.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:44 AM ^
Yeah - if it involves a player (and thus STUDENT) email account... this is pretty bad. FERPA and all that.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
Um, what exactly are "computer access crimes"? That doesn't sound good. And neither does this
Last week, a neighbor of Weiss' in Ann Arbor told ESPN that several unmarked cars showed up outside Weiss' home in what appeared to be some type of police presence. (The neighbor declined to be named.) The search of his home is believed to be tied to the University of Michigan Police investigation, according to sources.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
Really weird. This might get interesting.
Computer Access crimes sounds like he was looking up personal info on players/students etc., logging into accounts to look at personal stuff, or giving information out that he 100% shouldn’t have been 🤷♂️
January 17th, 2023 at 8:44 PM ^
That’s not what it sounds like to me at all.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:52 PM ^
Yeah, no.
January 17th, 2023 at 8:53 PM ^
I've watched too much Law & Order SVU to think that's what they're talking about.
January 17th, 2023 at 9:39 PM ^
It's my understanding that computer access crimes is just in addition to the underlying crime, like committing fraud over the internet is both fraud with the additional charge of using a computer to do so.
So yeah, not knowing the underlying charge it could be anything. But I don't know if "access" here is particularly dispositive even if it might turn out he did use it to commit a crime that involved illegal access to records, for example.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:00 PM ^
Was he looking for portal transfers?
January 17th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
Just saw. Very curious what this is.
January 17th, 2023 at 10:45 PM ^
Yes, it's come to this. Quit wishing Pravda had better news, even though your own henchmen wrote it.
You've got the biggest nuke arsenal on the planet, maybe 12 functional "tanks", 5 stealth hot air balloons and yet somehow a former third rate actor/comedian is kicking your ass like it's a bad 80's movie and you just messed with the wrong high school.
God you miss the KGB, don't you?! Don't you.
WOLVERINES!!!
January 18th, 2023 at 10:07 AM ^
And now we've got Poseidon! Do your best!
January 17th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
Really racking my brain what “computer access crimes” could be.
Unapproved access to some secure system? EHR or something?
