We need Crisler to be a hostile environment on Saturday

I wish I could be there but will be cheering like crazy as I pace in my family room here in California.  As we know this is a critical swing game for the team's tourney chances, hoping the fans will bring all their energy and will this team into the tournament.

Crisler isn’t “hostile” even when it is.  But yes, a good crowd would be nice.  Honestly though I have heard some frowning upon the crowds in the last two games but from home the crowds have seemed formidable.

The crowd for Nebraska was maybe 2/3 full.  The lower bowl continues to be pathetic--I really wish that there was a way to penalize those who buy but don't use tickets.  Of course that requires an app to easily exchange/upgrade/consolidate tix.  Maybe in a future time we will have such technology.

100% agree. My wife and I are longtime season ticket holders, and we rant about this every game! We very rarely miss a game, but when we have to, it’s easy to give away our tickets to someone who is very eager to attend. It’s easier than ever with electronic transfer! There is no excuse for all the empty seats, especially in the lower bowl, game after game.

I have season tickets for football and basketball and at both I sit next to season ticket holders who have never used the seats. At least the football market is crazy enough that it is usually M fans, but the only time the basketball tickets have sold all season has been to away fans. I had to sit next to some 20 year old bro from CMU who screamed in my face the entire game while I said absolutely 0 to him. A giant F you to whoever buys the seats next to me. Having complained a few times I can tell you the athletic department could not care less and has no plans to even think of ways to enforce attendance. As long as they get their $ at the end of the day they have no incentive to do otherwise.

There were a lot of games in the Beilein ere where Crisler was a legitimate home court advantage and a really fun atmosphere.  I wonder what changed the last few years.  A couple thoughts:

1. With the football team's success, people don't care as much about basketball.

2. In the early 2010s, basketball success was new and exciting for most of us.  Then the 2013 final four run was another level of success that build excitement.

3. The last two seasons, our team hasn't been as good.

4. Tickets for a lot of games are super expensive ($140 for lower level this Saturday before fees which StubHub doesn't allow you to see anymore?  So maybe $160 each)

I'd guess it's a combination of #1 and 3.  Anybody have thoughts?

It can get pretty raucous.  But yeah, when opposing fans say we have a wine and cheese crowd, they are absolutely correct.

And agree that Saturday would be the right time to get raucous (and then again next week against MSU).

This game is a pretty high leverage game for M's tourney chances.  I'd guess a 25% swing (30% chance of making it if they win, 5% chance if they lose).

I'm glad it sounded that way on TV, but having been at both games, the crowds were nowhere near "formidable." Sadly, the OSU game on Sunday was as quiet as I can imagine for a rivalry game. It was as if most of the non-students there were purposefully being quiet the whole game. Like, wtf? It's a rivalry game on a weekend! It felt like being in a library where a basketball game was being played in the middle.

The Nebraska game on Wed night was actually louder and not really all that bad given the quality of the opponent. Still, not exactly a raucous atmosphere.

The crowds that attend games at Crisler are not very enthusiastic at all.  Last night the television broadcasters even mentioned how quiet the arena was.  I don’t know what it takes to get people stomping their feet and yelling at the top of their lungs.  Maybe it only happens when MSU or OSU shows up.  As of now it’s probably a case of “ This team isn’t that good”.  It would be great to hear more crowd noise, that’s for sure.  Even the Maize Rage was quiet last night.

I've been to a few games in my day where the student crowds were great, and others where it was awful. It isn't unusual in terms of split between upper and lower level seats. Their location and amount in the lower level will always be debated/scrutinized, but they still need to at least show up.

I'm an old guy who hasn't been to a game in Crisler in ... thirty years, but certainly, in the 1980s, Crisler was known for its ... um ... less-than-insane atmosphere. The analysis, back then, was that because everyone had padded/cushioned seats, it was so comfortable it was just more appealing to sit, whereas crowds in arenas like Phog Allen (where I went my freshman year), which had bleachers, were famously more willing to stand and cheer.

At this point I just lean into it. Crisler is like a high-end concert hall: A great place to watch a game, comfortable, and respectfully quiet. :-)

For what it's worth, with a few exceptions, I've always found the football stadium similarly unthreatening. In the case of football it's because of the design of the stadium, with most crowd noise going up and out instead of towards the field.

Whichever way you cut it, the best "home crowd" atmosphere has always been Yost.

People love to trot this excuse out, as though our fans are screaming their lungs out, only for the noise to be escaping.   Actually, it can get really loud down on the field, when our fans choose to get vocal.  The problem is that most of our non-student fans don't make that choice very often.
