WBB Ballin' Out

Submitted by M Ascending on

For those of you who don't follow women's basketball, our ladies have been totally ballin' out lately.  They are ranked No. 13 in the country with a 19-4 record and are on a 6-game winning streak, including wins over OSU and MSU.  Our women's team has never been ranked higher than 12 in its history, but with a couple of wins this week, we could surpass that.

Tonight, we have a home game against a strong Purdue team at 8 p.m.  Unlike men's games, tickets are cheap (6 bucks) and you can sit virtually courtside.  The energy is fantastic; the basketball is high quality; and you can get to see Michigan's all-time leading scorer, Katelynn Flaherty, in action for one of the last times.

Let's Crash Crisler and Jam the Gym!!! Go Blue!

the game is on BTN.

Chengelis had a nice article on Jillian Dunston in the DetNews yesterday.

She’s the unsung hero,” Barnes Arico said. “She does everything. She’s a difference-maker in our program. I say it publicly all the time, she’s arguably our MVP just as much as Katelynn is our MVP because of what she brings to our program, and that doesn’t show up in the box score.

That guy is really dumb and has several accounts, but would he be dumb enough to create an account with a similar name? Sadly, after yesterday, I believe he would, but no i am not him. No idea about his claims of where he grew up. I actually grew up in Fairbanks. I was a military kid, lived there until i was 12.

If we take care of business these next few games, the last regular season game against Maryland could be for the B1G championship (this of course requires Maryland to take care of business as well for it to matter).  GO BLUE!!

you can also sit "virtually courtside" at Men's games, if by virtually you mean that there are plenty of unoccupied seats courtside..

No, I mean that you can sit in the first few rows at the WBB games.  The actual on-the-floor seats (the Nicholson seats) are all reserved.  And, at the men's games, even though many of the blue seats are often unoccupied, you can't sit there without a ticket -- I have tried in the past.

Interesting to note the former WBB Coach Kevin Borseth has the Wisconsin-Green Bay team ranked at #20 with a 19-2 record.  They haven't played the toughest schedule, but enough people are convinced enough to rank them.

That said, I'm happy to have KBA as coach.

From what I understand, Borseth didn't really feel comfortable at Michigan (perhaps due to being in a bigger conference under a bigger spotlight) so he left and returned to Green Bay despite reasonable success in Ann Arbor (first NCAA bid in eleven years).  So yes, GB has dominated the Horizon League but they are the big fish in a small pond.

Green Bay has been really good for a long time in women's hoops, so they built up some national respect. Not uncommon to see that team ranked.

Glad Borseth is happy and Michigan found a coach to take program up a notch. KBA has been recruiting well so hopefully it continues.

On January 5, 2010, Brandon was named athletic director at the University of Michigan, succeeding Bill Martin.

Borseth led the Lady Wolverines to two more WNIT berths in the next three seasons and returned them to the NCAA tournament in 2012, where they lost in the first round.

On April 4, 2012, Borseth announced he was resigning as Michigan's coach and returning to Green Bay to coach at UWGB due to it being closer to his home.

The top 16 seeds in the nation get to host the first and second round of the NCAA tournament.  That's entirely possible for Michigan this year.  The games would be either Friday & Sunday, March 16 & 18, or they would be Saturday & Monday, March 17 & 19.

It would be nice to have a big crowd at Crisler if this ends up happening.

Of our four losses, three were to top 10 teams (@ #5 Louisville; #3 Notre Dame; @ #23 Iowa;  #10 OSU in OT) and we avenged one of those losses with a win on the road against OSU.

This is the best team we've ever had. If we go 5-1 down the stretch, we'll tie our best conference record in program history at 13-3. That's a big ask with three on the road reamining, and four of which coming against teams with winning conference records. So I would expect us to end up 12-4 or 11-5 in conference play. Which is still very good.

Single elimination tournaments are often a crapshoot, so I won't put much stock in our NCAA performance, but it will be good to get back to it.
