Washington WR Ja'Lynn Polk out for the season

He was injured in the first quarter of their game against Montana and is done for the year.

Washington only has 8 scholarship WRs on their roster. Going into the game against Montana, the projected top 4 were Polk, Rome Odunze, Terrell Bynum and Jalen McMillan. The latter 3 all missed the game against Montana due to injury and now Polk is joining them on the injury report. Jimmy Lake said earlier today that Odunze, Bynum and McMillan are all week to week so they may or may not be healthy for this weekend.

COVID may have affected your memory of 2020 which is entirely reasonable, but Ronnie did not return any punts last year.  From his stats,

Giles almost certainly would have been the punt returner if he were still here.

Meanwhile, Giles had 2 rushes, 4 receptions and 2 KO returns last weekend, so I'm pretty sure that we'll be seeing him plenty this weekend.

Best wishes for a quick recovery for Ronnie!

Well, that sucks - I feel for the kid.  Don't want to see anyone injured enough to be out for the entire year.  Hope he recovers quickly and can get back on the field next year.

First, I wish no injury on any player, and my best wishes to the young man.

Second, though, this is probably good for Michigan. An enervated opponent that has a very real chance of getting stronger in the longer term to bolster SOS.

How quickly this team has fallen after Chris Peterson, and then later, Pete Kwiatkoski, left. They are in a tough spot. Sometimes I think teams like this are like an injured dog in a corner. But I don't get that from Washington. Michigan should win this one, especially with one weeks experience for the defense in this new system. They looked fired up two days ago. They will be too this Saturday, at night, on prime time tv.

I don't even know what it would be like to have all the 2 deep WRs either out or banged up.

To add to it, coming off a loss to Montana, where they only scored in the first qtr, and were held to 65 yards rushing. I'm hoping the defense causes havoc in the backfield right away, and the Washington QB continues throwing picks. Because as it is, it doesn't look like Washington will set up a run game to take some defensive pressure off of him.

You know, you saying that, reminded me someone said that Saturday. Trying to remember who it was. Huard was ranked high in the class than JJ McCarthy. Though watching him play, I had to wonder why. But yeah, could happen. Don't know how ready he will be though.

You want to start a freshman QB at the big house, under the lights, against a defense that just built a boatload of confidence under a new coordinator?

(this would be the perfect time for me to know how to place the Morgan freeman good luck gif from the dark knight)

Good luck.

Yeah I know most people don't watch all the games or have in-depth knowledge of rosters and what-not, but Washington is choosing between an experienced but lackluster QB (Dylan Morris) who athletically is good enough but is struggling at basic reads and accuracy like Wisconsin's Mertz or Sean Clifford at Penn State in years past.  Or they start a true freshman on the road.  That's not great Bob.

However, their defense is still legit enough to keep the score low where if whoever is QB manages a few decent throws and gets the team a field goal, they could keep up.  Or Michigan could blow the doors open in the 3rd quarter as Washington crumples under the pressure of having a shaky O that can't score (never seen that happen before, right?)

From the front page article before the season started:

Washington

“Where they have stability in the receivers' room is with Cade Otton, a 1st team All-PAC 12 selection last year at the TE position…Beyond Otton there's a pretty big drop off, as the Huskies bid adieu in the offseason to their top two receivers (by total yardage) from last season in Puka Nacua (what a name) and Ty Jones. That left a gaping hole who they have tried to fill by getting Giles Jackson from Michigan and Ja'Lynn Polk from Texas Tech... Polk put up decent numbers for Tech last season … Outside of those two names, they have limited returning production from Terrell Bynum (8 rec., 130 yards LY) and Rome Odunze (6 rec., 72 yards LY). Jalen McMillan projects to be one of the two slot options alongside Jackson, but has just one catch to his name.”

Washington still has a good defense. So, I am a bit worried but if Cade plays well and can hit some throws to open up the running game, we should win this game.
