Washington Post piece: Not a Michigan man, but Brown is a perfect fit

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

OK, so I can't find this piece that appears in this morning's print edition of the Washington Post anywhere on WashPo's site. The only place I could find it is on PrintReader, which it turns out makes it a snap to copy and paste articles into the webtool of your choice. So here you go: (BTW, the WashPo is the defacto local paper for the Terps ICYDK, although some would argue it's the Baltimore Sun, but whatever):

Not a Michigan man, but Brown is a perfect fit

Well-traveled coordinator’s relentless philosophy has made the Wolverines’ defense the best in the country

  • The Washington Post
  • 3 Nov 2016
  • BY CHUCK CULPEPPER
LON HORWEDEL/ASSOCIATED PRESSMichigan Coach Jim Harbaugh, left, hired Don Brown in December after Brown turned Boston College’s defense into the best in the country during his three seasons there.

MOD EDIT - Since the link exists, let's not paste entire articles into the blog. I realize the difficulty in this instance as the OP stated, but we should correct the problem as soon as the right link is available, IMHO. - LSA

Thanks for the edit. -OP

This is a nice article, and who'd have thought we'd actually be able to upgrade our DC position from last year (at least before OSU)?

"Do I look old?"  Uhm, no sir.  Not at all.  You look ... weathered!  That's the ticket.  You look weathered, with a fine patina of years of solving problems with aggression.  Actually, chiseled.  Chiseled's the word - you look ... chiseled.

I mean did you you see this 61-year old man with a gray mustache chest bump Jabrill Peppers during the game?

Yeah I'd say he loves his guys and still have a lot of miles on his tread.

Personally, I get sick of reporters who don't understand the "Michigan Man" reference and continue to misuse it.

About Don Brown:

  • He believes in hard work, to his very core
  • He is passionate
  • He is a teacher
  • He loves his boys
  • In his own words "I’m not an individual guy. I’m more of, ‘Get the unit going.’"...or as Bo said [The Team...the Team...the Team]
  • He has high character
  • He is a Leader
  • He sets a great example
  • He chose to come here and to embrace the tradtion of Michigan

That sounds EXACTLY like a Michigan Man to me.

The man is going to retire at Ann Arbor and once he does he is going to get a seat at the sideline bench so he can continue whispering "Blitz, blitz, blitz, and why not blitz again." Or so I hope that's what happens. I would be happy

I have a sneaking suspicion that in the years to come, as all of us are growing old and reminiscing to our grandkids about this Golden Age of Michigan football, that Don Brown and his defenses will factor strongly into the tales we tell.

“But do let me reiterate the spirit of Michigan. It is based upon a deathless loyalty to Michigan and all her ways; an enthusiasm that makes it second nature for Michigan men to spread the gospel of their university to the world’s distant outposts; a conviction that nowhere is there a better university, in any way, than this Michigan of ours.” -Fielding H. Yost

But this is definitely a wingman camaraderie.  Brown oozes the New England that everyone in New England wants to claim they do.  Some do anyway (these people are known as "posers"), but he's the real deal.  From the 'stache to the way he talks, you don't need to tell me where he's spent the past few decades, but what you like about him are what you'd like in anyone from anywhere.  It's not that he's from New England or Harbaugh's from Michigan; the way these guys see eye to eye has shit to do with geography.

Consider it a permanent vacation for him, or better yet, this IS his retirement.  After decades of cookin' up 5-star blitzes out of Wal-mart pasta and cans of Chef Boyardee, he gets to make opponents eat Taco with Peppers and Worm.  It's obvious he's having the time of his life; why would he leave?  What's he gonna do, play golf?

People are getting this wrong.  Being a "Michigan Man" isn't supposed to be about where you were born or attended school. It's about whether you represent this school and its values.

Bill Frieder has a couple degrees from U-M, but Bo correctly stated in 1989 that he was not a Michigan Man, as he was willing to abandon our program for another school, and even negotiated the deal during the season.

Exactly. This is why the term needed to be retired in the first place. People using it wrong. Do you ever think that you represent the University of Michigan and use that thought to motivate yourself to work harder or do something "the right way"? If the answer is yes, then you're a Michigan Man. That's all there is to it. You have to believe that being a Michigan Man means something, and then you have to strive to achieve it. It can apply to anybody.

But Michigan doesn't have a monopoly on values, especially since we're still crawling out of the shadow of Dave effin' Brandon.  Doc Brown's values are his own.  That they're the values Harbaugh wants is a good thing -- celebrate that -- but saying Brown is a "Michigan Man" implies the school and the values are one and the same.  By your logic, what was Brown last year?  Same guy, but no ties to Michigan.  So, he's a punk?  Or can "Michigan Man" refer to some rice farmer in Tibet who has values?  The latter is nonsensical.  The former goes down the path that got us Dave Brandon, because once you do that, it's easy to cast off the values and coast on the name.  It's why Hackett got rid of the term; it's dangerous.  I still use it, but pretty much tongue in cheek.

Brown's an awesome dude, and he works for us, for the right reasons.  That should be enough.  You may think you sound inclusive, which is nice, but in fact you're being offensive.  Don't pretend Brown doesn't have roots.  He spent over 50 years in New England; Michigan had nothing to do with it.  He didn't get his values going to Michigan, rooting for Michigan, living in Michigan or representing Michigan.  What's "Michigan" about it, and I say this with pride, is that instead of hiring another damn "Michigan Man", Harbaugh hired Brown for who he is.  May that be what Michigan is for the rest of my life -- a place that recognizes excellence and doesn't give a damn where it came from.

Nobody's claiming values are unique to Michigan. That's not it.

It's really up to Brown, and presumptuous for us to claim him as a Michigan Man without him first saying anything about Michigan being a special place. But the strawman argument about Michigan having a monopoly on values misses the mark.

You are overthinking this.  There is no complicated definition here.  Nor is this any sort of commentary on other schools or groups of people.

Michigan believes in striving for success while maintaining our integrity.  Someone here who upholds those principles is a Michigan Man.  That's all.

It's so annoying seeing Michigan people misdefining the term "Michigan Man" and then claiming that more accurate definitions are all wrong.

You are a Michigan man if you strive for excellence in anything, while avoiding moral shortcuts, and, in your heart, give at least some of the credit for your staying on the narrow road to your association with Michigan.  You don't need to be at Michigan, and you don't need to want to be at Michigan.

First I've heard of that phrase.  You may want to be careful with that one.  Some people might misconstrue the meaning and take it as only people who have spent their entire career at Michigan should be considered for all open positions at Michigan.  It could even become a devisive term by accident.  I doubt that would ever happen, but you never know.

Brown was a perfect fit. He's going to dominate with Michigan and allow Harbaugh to spend more time coming up with crazy plays and formations to befuddle other teams.

Very good read. Also speaks volumes about Harbaugh. He researched, saw that DB was statistically one of the best DCs in college football and said, I want that guy, and then gets what he wants. We are very fortunate to be in that position. Hope DB sticks around forever, or at least as long as possible. The Dude is fantastic.

I imagine this interview was conducted in a dark paneled room, over pasta with red sauce, while they smoked cigars and drank scotch neat.
