Is this Nugget:

New Pilots

Jack and Jared Wangler have transferred to Warren DeLaSalle from Royal Oak Shrine. By MHSAA rule, both are athletically ineligible this semester, but will be eligible in the fall. Jack Wangler, a junior, is considered one of the top receivers in the Catholic League. Jared, a sophomore, is expected to play football and basketball next season.

They are the sons of former Michigan quarterback John Wangler .

Shrine administrators made a request, seeking to discourage such transfers, the Wanglers be ruled ineligible through the first semester of 2012-13, but league director Vic Michaels ruled in favor of the Wanglers.

Having one of the top WR in the Catholic League should help Shane alot this year.   This seemed to be a reaccuring theme all year, Shane played well, but too many drops, not enough open recievers.

Edit: sorry for the bad formatting at the top, but I pasted the important bits.

not sure if I like to see Hschool kits transfering for football reasons, but it would be nice to see Michigan Highschool football get to the level of atleast Ohio as far as number of quality programs in the state.  There is Alot of talent in the south, but its more because its better developed talent, not just having more kids that could be elite.

Exactly.  Football might be the only way these kids get to college.  I don't know anything about them, so maybe they both have 4.0 GPAs, but still.  If you're fine with kids transferring for academic reasons -- they're too smart for their current school, or they're not being challenged, or they want to go to a better high school to improve their chances of getting into a good college -- it's illogical to hate on these kids.  They're transferring for the exact same reasons.  They want competitive parity.  They want a good, high-profile QB who can showcase their skills and enable them to succeed to the best of their ability and so be more attractive to high-profile colleges.  I have absolutely no idea why anyone would ever be opposed to this.  If you're a genius, you want a school with a million AP classes.  If you're a football star, you want a school that wins state titles.

now if the family moved or something, yeah I get it. but to leave one Catholic League high school for another to play with a big time qb recruit should he discouraged. if the education at DLS is that much better than it is at Shrine then being ineligible for next football season shouldn't be a problem.

as a former catholic leaguer I have semi-strong feelings about this type of thing going on in the league, and I'm looking forward to watching my Shamrocks ground the Pilots.

Is that you don't mind CC plucking players from all around the state, outside their "district", quite often for athletic reasons, even with examples you point out....but have a problem with someone doing it from one Catholic League team to another.  Which is an...interesting way to look at things.

those kids were the 3rd string qb and 3rd string tb respectively, and the academic benefit is tangible ans obvious in those cases. every starter i can recall from the '96 to '99 teams when went i there and played started CC as a ninth grader, and we certainly didn't have anyone that was all-catholic from another school such as divine child or bishop borgess. almost all of them DID come from local catholic grade schools tho. so I still don't see your point. the big 10 makes it difficult for football players to transfer within the conference, I would like to see the catholic league do the same, unless, for the 3rd or 4th time now, its demonstrated *not* to be about sports, like a WR wanting to play with Shane Morris. obviously, scandals or cutting teams from the school would be special circumstances.

Currently, the school is in Novi. Are all the kids playing football on the team from Novi? Even from "Catholic schools" in (heck, even around) Novi? Or do you consider local "southeastern Michigan"?  The point is worrying about another school having a kid come to play for another school for "athletic reasons" if it's from a private school to another private school, but having no problem with players leaving school districts all across the state to come to CC for "athletic reasons" reeks of hypocrisy.

First of all, the Big Ten doesn't keep kids from transferring to other Big Ten schools, they just won't let them play on scholarship.  But again, that's college athletics, which is a lot different than high school.

I'm sure a lot of the kids who started at CC as ninth graders started there for sports reasons, so what's wrong with going there as a sophomore for sports reasons?  That's the thing about private high schools - you can pick which one you go to.

Also, and this might be beside the point, but you'd never be able to enforce the rule about switching schools for sports reasons.  The parents could say that they had a bad experience with a science teacher, or didn't like the group of kids his son was hanging out with, or the location was on his way to work, whatever.  It's impossible to prove why a parent wants to switch schools for his kids.

Is concerned about players leaving their actual living area to go to another Catholic School just to play football. Was that intentionally ironic?

No kidding.  Count that among "things I wish I had written."  Worrying about kids transferring among the Catholic League schools for sports reasons is like worrying about the Consumer Protection Act when purchasing things that fell off a truck from the Sopranos.

You would not be saying that if they transferred to CC.  I think that is hypocritcal to say otherwise.  You would use reasons like academics, test scores, and what have you as possible reasons.  If they trasferred from Shrine to DLS for football why not trasfer to CC since they have been the powerhouse team in the Catholic League for many many years.  Nobody can deny that.  Give the kids the benefit of the doubt for why they transferred.  There could be a number of reasons.  These transfers happen all the time between public and private schools and very little is said about those transfers.  Remember we are talking about 15/16/ and 17 year old kids.  We give recruits who choose other schools over Michigan respect and wish them the best.  I think we should do the same in this situation.

i'll tell you why not CC, because he's a WR. and even if he did, I still wouldn't like it. unless something happens with the family I think it's lame to switch schools for sports within the League.

The transfer had much more than football as a reason.  To assume otherwise would be unfair to these kids.  Similar to assuming Caleb Stacey decommitted because "he felt he didnt have a chance to play" would be unfair.  They are both great kids and deserve the benefit of the doubt for why they transferred.

has me casting side-eye at anything like this. particularly a receiver from slightly above average A-B division Shrine to D1 semifinalist Central Division De La Salle, who happens to be starting a top 3 qb recruit.

Why should there be any restrictions on a parent deciding where it is best for their child to attend private school???  For whatever reason, even if that reason were solely football?  This athletic inelidgibility nonsense as a form of discouragement is ridiculous.  If someone decides they don't  want to go to your school anymore don't try to mess up their future because you don't like it.

I agree.  I'm struggling with where to move as my son transitions from elementary to junior high.  He was in an outstanding elementary which feeds into a below average junior high. Athletics are a part of that equation, but only enters into the equation when we are discussing schools that are equal in academics.  My son is gifted athletically but much more so academically, so you go where the strengths of the child are or wherever you think they will get the biggest advantages.

You (the generic you, not you icactus) can form your own opinion about what the Wanglers should be doing, but parenting is full of tough decisions, and until you are the Wanglers you should keep it to yourself.

I also couldn't agree more.  I'm a little more iffy when it comes to kids choosing public schools outside of their district, but private schools just play by different rules and that's fine.  When you go to public school, you're locked into your district (and should be, outside of extenuating circumstances, IMO), but private schools have no district, and a kid can switch every year if he wants to.

But I'm stunned to see a CC alum criticize transferring for sports-only.

With that, as an alum of a Catholic League school that sees more kids transfer out for academic/sports reasons than transfer in (U of D High, i.e., Sims, Gardner, etc.), I actually don't see what's wrong with it.  It's a private school.  Since when are we entitled (or ought to judge) the reasons a kid attends a private school?

There are many a kid that didn't attend U of D either because the academics were too tough or the sports too shitty.  So be it.

Besides -- if you're the type of athlete that may be able to get a full ride in college if  you're in a place that best displays your skillset, why shouldn't you leave?

This may not shed that much more light on why they transferred, but an Oakland Press article from a couple weeks ago makes it clear this was the sons' decision, not John Wangler's (who attended Shrine himself and is called a "Shrine legend").

"I will always love Shrine and the Shrine community," said John Wangler Sunday night. "I am a Knight forever in my heart and soul and I would honestly do anything for that school that I could possibly do. But people have to understand this isn't about me, it's about my kids."

The nationally well-respected Wangler sounded conflicted, yet at the same time content throughout the conversation.

"This was a choice made by Jack and Jared," he said. "They weren't happy and I wasn't going to force them to stay there just because I'm an notable alum and that's what's expected of them. The bottom line is I want my sons to be happy and if this is the decision that they want to make and a choice that will make them happy, than I support them 100 percent."

Kids transfer every year. This isn't an enormous deal. It's not like two 4star players just left Shrine for greener pastures.

<br>A kid who played 2 years at my kids CHSL school transferred to Shrine his junior year. Now he's a walk-on at LSU.

but on the plus side atleast shane will have a weapon at WR next year, hopefully he will show everyone what he really is made of.  7 on 7s are great, but that don't win big ten championships
