USMNT vs Canada

Starting right now.

Just grabbed a free trial of Paramount+ to watch.

If the USMNT grabs a dub, that would go a LONG way towards qualification.

Man, feels like the US has had the ball on Canada's side of the field for 80% of this half.  Canada is lethal with the counter attacks though, and really made the most out of their limited opportunities.  Feels like when the US has the ball within 25 yards of Canada's goal they get sped up and always make the wrong play.  Think we're (the US) going to have to score on a set piece to equalize this.

Halftime: 1-0 Canada

Frustrating half to watch. USA basically dominated possession and had the ball in Canada's half the majority of the half- they gave up a goal on a bad set piece counter.

Canadian goalie made a ridiculous save on McKennie, but other than that, not a ton of great legit chances.

I don't have Paramount+, so thank god for Telemundo. Watching it in Spanish brings back memories from when Univision/Telemundo was oftentimes the only option for catching many USMNT games in the late 90s early 00s.

Keep shooting on goal.  They said it at halftime,  Too much dribbling and too many bad touches.  Get the ball on goal and see what happens.

Not a pen in the box, but man, this is a terribly officiated game.  Prison rules out there.  US needs an incisive ball into the box and someone who can finish.

Ed:  Yes, bring on the guy who looks like a rugby player.

Definitely outplaying them; gotta find something here in the last 15 mins.

Fuck Canada. They're msu (inferiority complex makes their fans insufferable) and Mexico is osu (our true rivals, also with vile supporters); both of them fit that analogy in so many ways.

I'm not sure where most of these guys play their club soccer, but the interference when the ball is gone is ridiculous.  The whistles would have started blowing early in the first half, and yellow cards by the start of the second half.  That it's still going on is just silly.

And overhead kicks continue to be the most ridiculous offensive attempt in soccer.

@truferblu22

This is possibly the most myopic take I have encountered on MGo. You are angry because your team has access to resources, talent, coaching and facilities that Canada has not had until the current generation. They should be better but they are not better. That's hard to deal with so I read this nonsense.

Scoreboard tells the story. Canada is 2-0-2 vs USMNT this cycle. Today's outcome isn't new and all the rationalizing in the world won't make it go away.

Did you even read what I wrote there? The US has every resource available, ten times the population and a university system so good at producing and developing talent we send many Canadians there each year. No amount of rationalizing (or baiting with this MSU nonsense) takes away the loss today. Look, Canada soccer has been where you are now over and over again. We didn't myopically name call...we (finally) hired the right guy and put the right people in place related to selection.

Now, feel free to return to your regularly scheduled blaming the referees, the Canadian team, their coaches, the style of play or whatever new rationalization you can come up with...FFS.

Another game coached by gergg, another game we struggle to create dangerous chances.

It's never going to change.under berhalter. Need a change at the top.

Should have been able to break them down after their goal in the 7th minute.  Just had nothing in the final third.  Pulisic isn't the kind of player who is going to take it into the box and dish to a clinical finisher.  And there's no one else on the team to fill that role either.  Pulisic is that finisher.

So even if you get that change at the top, you're stuck playing with what you have.

No.

Zardes was a disaster of a tactical decision. He was the difference in the first 60 minutes. He was a bad target man, was constantly bodied out of position and couldn't give Pulisic and Aaronson the feed they needed. He was completely absent on set pieces as well.

Once Pepi came in you saw more outisde-inside-outside play but by that time the team was playing without patience.

Look at the body of evidence. Everywhere Berhalter coaches the teams struggle to score despite having talent. He is an abysmal tactician.

Frustrating team.  They play really hard but make huge mental errors at inopportune times and just have no idea what to do in the final 3rd.  Wonder if Weah would have made a difference in this game.

Then play with panic.

I've always said...this team isn't talented enough to not play like they're down 0-1 from the start.

They need have to keep that old, gritty, play harder than you mentality and mix it with the youth, and admittedly more skilled roster.

But they only do that when playing Mexico.

Exactly. Everyone thinks that because our guys play on big clubs, that we should boss everyone around. But they're all like 19 and CONCACAF is not Europe. We saw that officiating today...we need more grit -- these kids are good and they'll gain that over time but they're just too inexperienced to handle a lot of the pure bullshit that happens in this region.

If Costa Rica finds a way to beat Mexico on the road (0-0 early in 2nd half), the USMNT is in a bit of trouble. They have to travel to Mexico and Costa Rica still and host Panama (all in March). Those draws at El Salvador and Jamaica could come back to haunt them.

If Mexico wins, the table looks like this:

1. Canada - 22

2. Mexico - 20

3. USA - 18

4. Panama - 17

5. Costa Rica - 12

If Costa Rica wins, the table looks like:

1. Canada - 22

2. USA - 18

3. Mexico - 17

4. Panama - 17

5. Costa Rica - 16

The top 3 advance to the World Cup, 4th place team has to play two legs against another team in another confederation for a spot in the WC. If Costa Rica keeps losing, then there will be fewer teams fighting for those top 4 positions. They wouldn’t be eliminated, but they’d be a huge long shot. USA would at least be guaranteed the 4th spot. With a Costa Rica win over Mexico, worst case scenario changes.

Being 1st or being 3rd at the end is irrelevant. The goal isn't to win the group or finish in the highest position, but simply to be in the top 3. Being 4th is survivable (others can comment on the ability of New Zealand). Being 5th is death. A Costa Rica loss puts them far below the top 4. They can still get it done, but a lot of ground to make up.

Canada, the best team in Concacaf?  Who would have thought?

Mexico just can't get over hump, it's been a long time since I´ve felt we can field a team that can actually get to the fifth game.  The talent is there, but the mental aspct just never is.

After the results of the key games today (sorry Honduras and El Salvador), I think the Americans should be in good enough shape should they win their two remaining home matches (Honduras and Panama). That would put them on 24 points and Costa Rica would have to win out to get to 25 (which is doable--decent remaining schedule for them--bad teams on the road, US and Canada at home). Panama would need to get 7 points out of their remaining 3 non-US games to get to 24 points which includes at Mexico and hosting Canada.

Anything can happen, but assuming they can beat the worst team in the group at home, a win over Panama in March at home should be enough to secure qualification.
