Urban Meyer Puppet OC sets new standard for Ohio Classlessness
OSU OC RT @marcushartman (Ed) Warinner on lost playbooks in Michigan: "I heard Brady was upset because he hadn't finished coloring them."
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) April 2, 2014
Can't remember offhand a college football staff member ever taking such a cheap shot before. Maybe Spurrier at some point, or perhaps Bielema (or Mrs. Bielema). But nothing comes to mind.
How many days until The Game?
Warinner comments delivered to group of mostly fans at a fundraiser. Big smile on his face. Poking fun. Don't overthink it
Let's try not to overreact. I can understand that people would be ticked off at this though.
Yeah, it feels like some rivalry talk. A little surprised it would be be made a public-ish setting, but whatever.
I can think of few things less important to me than what an OSU coach says about UM.
because one of our guys did not say it. They have one up on us now. Very funny.
I do not take anything ohio players or staff says to a group of alumni. If they said this about Purdue, then I am angry.
People have to remember, there is only 1 "best rivalry in all of sports". Anything is possible.
bothered by these comments as I am by Urban throwing his backup QB under the bus. For some reason, this link isn't working but he said something to the effect of: "he's been bad. Very bad."
I can't picture Hoke or Nuss saying that about a player.
is now working. Quote from Article:
Meyer said redshirt sophomore quarterback Cardale Jones is the clear backup quarterback but the Cleveland, Ohio, native struggled mightily during practice Tuesday. "You caught me at a bad day because Cardale was bad today. And when I say bad, real bad," Meyer said.
D!ck Move
I've got no problem with a coach saying stuff like that.
Yeah, lets have a coach who doesn't critize and tells you that you are good when you suck. How'd that work out for DG last year?
Meyer on paying college athletes debate
...
Meyer offered his thoughts on the matter Tuesday.
Are student-athletes employees? "I don't feel that at all," Meyer said. "What I do feel is that students should get more than what they get. It gets so complicated though and I'm so focused on our team that I've read a little bit of it, I've watched it when it comes up but to say I've immersed myself in that situation I haven't.
"But things like students, athletes, parents should come on visit and shouldn't have to pay for it. They should get a stipend. But to say that they can go out and get their own shoe contracts and those kind of things, I start hearing that and I'm like, 'Woah.' What would that do for this great sport and really, what would that do for college athletics as a whole? I don't know a whole lot, I imagine after spring I'll hear more."
And it might cut into the $5 million-plus per year Urban has all to himself. Why share part of the endorsement or licensing revenue stream with the specific kids that do as much to sell jerseys as Urban does? Where does the Urban Meyer coaching pullover rank on Amazon.com?
I am not offended; I think everyone there should be offended because the joke is at least 50 years old.
How dare people have fun?
The visual alone is quite hilarious.
Look at the OP's background. Sense of humor is not his thing.
you find this ancient joke funny. Inspiration might not be YOUR thing.
Thing IS that this hits M fans where we're a little bit vulnerable--worrying whether Hoke is really up to his job. And it's mean-spirited, in a fifth-grade way which is about what we'd expect from a DUMB football coach.
So we've come full-circle, and Meyer's nimrod OC has ended up suggesting about himself what he insinuates about Hoke. Good stuff.
I had the same feeling as the OP, but when thinking about it...if some other OC, even if it was Nuss, had said something about Urban M.F'ing Meyer, I would be laughing my ass off. The fact that Hoke would never permit such a thing to be said by his staff is beside the point. Considering the audience, I'd say yeah...no need to get too mad about this one.
But I do agree...how many days until The Game?
I don't know, I think this goes kind of below the belt. Imagine someone making fun of Urban's health issues, or alluding to the more scandalous rumors surrounding his Florida departure.
How are these equivalent?
Your analogy works only if Brady Hoke has a known learning disability or predilection for coloring books
today - thanks!
about how intelligent he is.
If he said it on ESPN with a mic and a camera in his face, I may feel differently. I'm not HAPPY with what he said by any means, just not getting too mad about this one. Let it be bulletin board fodder for the team, get 'em fired up.
It is definitely classless what he said...but honestly, should we expect anything less from those clowns?
Yeah, we all know about Brady Hoke's well-documented color-blindness and mental state of a 5-year-old?
It's a rival making fun of another with a PG joke. Might be looking for more than it is here.
joking about his coaching ability would seem to be in the realm of playful fun. But this comment plays off of the meme that Brady ain't too smart. I think that is a little more hurtful and unnecessary. Hell, even Brady weight jokes would be better.
"or alluding to the more scandalous rumors surrounding his Florida departure."
You got that right. An Ohio coach talking to a room of semi-literate Buckeye fans who want to hear sophomoric comments about Michigan vs. intelligent insight by the OC about the upcoming season is no surprise. I'd hope our coaches would stay way above that level and would be disappointed if they said something similar.
I love this talk. My favorite quote from the rivalry was from Woody - "Because I couldn't go for three!" We shouldn't want to sterilize and homogenize football games. Michigan vs OSU is a special rivalry. Things like this add to the vigor. Vigor is good. Now Hoke needs to make an offhand comment about not needing a contract to spend time with his family, and we got some beef'a'cookin'.
cuz I couldn't go for 3 is funny and it relates to football---it ain't personal.
But to be honest, that is kinda funny, and was not at all malicious. I'm sure our coaches have their fair share of humorous off the record jabs at rival coaches.
I consider this to be a lot less objectionable than a certain DC's use of "60 minutes of unnecessary roughness." One guy clearly meant to tease while the other delights in being an asshat.
I have the opposite view. Personal insults are cheap; the certain DC's statement just echoed the team's play-hard-on-the-edge attitude.
And it's not like our team, featuring Taylor Lewan, had the moral high ground. Unfortunately.
the 'stephenr' accounts being so uppity? You and Mrs. Kass have the fun LOCKED DOWN around here.
stephen roll damn tide?
Ouch.
While they've obviously had more success than we have lately, OSU has only been to one Rose Bowl since 1997; we've been to four.
The great thing about buckeyes is they aren't even good at insults.
They've also been to three national championships in that span, so... y'know.
But they haven't been to Pasadena much, which was the joke.
They actually went to the Rose Bowl and won it in the 2009 season.
Good sleuthing! That's their one time since '97.
My apologies. I misread your original post.
I laughed, but it was tinged with melancholy.
It's one of those charity fundraisers where this shit is common.
I still think Woody Hayes' punch tops this joke.
I think it would be funnier if the coloring books were colored.
Winners talk and losers walk. Team 135 has some work to do.
