Urban Meyer believes the team that controls the line of scrimmage should prevail

Urban Meyer feels that the team that controls the line of scrimmage is likely to win and should be the team the CFP Committee prefers.

Paradoxically (but it would be weird if this weren't the case), he also feels that anOSU will win.

It's not weird or surprising for any football coach to say that the team that controls the line of scrimmage is likely to win.  Anyway, who'd he predict would win last year's game?

They used to do well cranking out powerful farmhand linemen by the brigade.  They need to get back to a sustainable model of power football with a running QB (which happens to be Urban's schtick).  They should actually be able to recruit the midwest better now that they're in the B1G.  Frost had decently talented teams, he just, personally, sucked.

A&M is much more likely to buy out Jimbo if they aren’t winning. It could even happen this off season, but I don’t think it will because of their recruiting prowess. A&M has a ton of oil money, and so does its boosters. For example, they bought the #1 recruiting class last year. Jimbo has also been losing for a couple more years than Tuck.

While OSU's raw talent in the trenches is about the same

a) They have been working all year to figure out a way to recover their dignity (wouldn't you?)  Their coaching staff has been preaching mental toughness for 42 weeks and 27 days.

b) They have a new defensive coordinator (who doesn't have a terrific track record in my view) that brings an attacking defense that lends itself to more variety, so the players are not asked to repeat something that hasn't been working.

If OSU got just one stop in the second half it is probably a 1-point game.  So maybe this year the Wolverines win by one.

I don't think they are, but it helped having two All-American caliber pass rushers.  I actually think Michigan is better equipped to defend the run this year (the year's version of Mazi > last year's Mazi, Jenkins > Hinton, Graham > last year's Jenkins), but unfortunately against this team the pass rush is a bigger priority.

The fact that Iowa and PSU had success with blitzes, especially with what Minter has been able to show in the games where they've diversified.  Michael Barrett on blitzes could be a big x factor.

"Baseball is a simple game: you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball."  -- Skip, from Bull Durham

I'm trying to think which is the more common coach-ism: this 'control the line of scrimmage' one, or 'avoid mistakes' one.  I guess if a team plays mistake-free ball while controlling the line of scrimmage they're gonna win.

Urban is a narcissistic sociopath, and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if internally he wants Michigan to win. His hatred of Michigan or love for OSU I don’t think supersedes his love for himself and he doesn’t want Day to do better than him. 1-2 vs Michigan would go a long way in satisfying him
